6 이제 내가 이 모든 땅을 내 종 바벨론의 왕 느부갓네살의 손에 주고 또 들짐승들을 그에게 주어서 섬기게 하였나니
7 모든 나라가 그와 그의 아들과 손자를 그 땅의 기한이 이르기까지 섬기리라 또한 많은 나라들과 큰 왕들이 그 자신을 섬기리라
8 여호와의 말씀이니라 바벨론의 왕 느부갓네살을 섬기지 아니하며 그 목으로 바벨론의 왕의 멍에를 메지 아니하는 백성과 나라는 내가 그들이 멸망하기까지 칼과 기근과 전염병으로 그 민족을 벌하리라
9 너희는 너희 선지자나 복술가나 꿈꾸는 자나 술사나 요술자가 이르기를 너희가 바벨론의 왕을 섬기게 되지 아니하리라 하여도 너희는 듣지 말라
10 그들은 너희에게 거짓을 예언하여 너희가 너희 땅에서 멀리 떠나게 하며 또 내가 너희를 몰아내게 하며 너희를 멸망하게 하느니라
11 그러나 그 목으로 바벨론의 왕의 멍에를 메고 그를 섬기는 나라는 내가 그들을 그 땅에 머물러 밭을 갈며 거기서 살게 하리라 하셨다 하라 여호와의 말씀이니라 하시니라
인터넷에서 사람들이 미국을 가리켜 천조국 이라고 부릅니다. 천조 天朝 는 고대 동아시아의 개념인데, 원래 중국 주나라에서 처음으로 사용한 용어로 하늘의 왕조라는 의미입니다. 영어로는Celestial Empire 라고 합니다. 그런데 요즘에는 미국의 국방비가 한화로 1000조원에 가깝다는 의미로 사용되고 있습니다.
그래서 숫자를 나타내는 한자로 千兆(천조)를 사용하여 천조국(千兆國) 이라고 부르는 것입니다.
여하튼 미국의 일년 국방비 예산이 세계 군사력 2위 국가부터 10위 국가를 모두 합쳐야 비슷하다 하니 정말 대단한 나라인 것은 분명합니다. G8이니 G2니 하지만 현재 세계 패권(覇權) hegemony은 분명히 미국이 쥐고 있는 것이 맞는 것 같습니다.
오늘 본문은 바로 이 패권에 관한 이야기입니다. 과연 세계의 패권은 누구의 손에 있는 것일까요?
패권의 주인 (1-7절)
27장 역시 예레미야에게 임한 하나님의 말씀으로 시작합니다. 그런데 시대적 배경이 여호야김이 다스리기 시작할 때 라고 기록되어 있습니다. 이어서 나머지 내용을 보면 갸우뚱 하실 것입니다.
B.C. 605년 여호야김이 의지하던 애굽의 바로인 느고왕이 바벨론 느부갓네살 왕에게 패합니다.
그러자 이집느 속국이었던 예루살렘은 바벨론의 속국이 됩니다.
이 때 모든 귀족과 인재들이 바벨론으로 잡혀가는데 다니엘과 세 친구도 그 중에 있었습니다.
바벨론에 끊임없이 대항하던 여호야김은 B.C598 전쟁에서 패한 후 짐승처럼 끌려 갑니다. 이어 그의 아들 여호야긴이 왕이 되지만, 그 역시 즉위3개월 만에 바벨론의 포로(B.C.597)로 잡혀 갑니다.
바벨론 느부갓네살은 이어서 요시야의 아들이며, 여호야김의 동생이자 여호야긴의 삼촌인 맛다니야를 시드기야로 개명한 후 왕위에 앉힙니다. 이것이 바로 오늘 본문의 시대적 상황입니다.
그러므로 여호야김이 다스리기 시작할 때 는 성경 사본을 베껴 쓰던 필사자의 오류로 봅니다.
시리아역 Peshitta, 아랍어역Arabic Version, 맛소라 사본Masoretic Tex 및 영어 번역본인 NIV, RSV 등은 시드기야가 다스리기 시작할 때Early in the reign of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah라고 기록합니다.
유다의 마지막 왕 시드기야와 주변국 에돔, 모압, 암몬, 두로, 시돈의 왕의 사신들이 예루살렘에 모였습니다. 아마도 바벨론에 연합하여 대항하기 위한 모의를 위한 것으로 보입니다.
주동자는 모이는 장소가 예루살렘인 것을 볼 때 시드기야 왕입니다.
그들에게 예레미야는 목에 줄과 멍에를 매는 상징적인 행동(2절)으로 하나님의 메시지를 전합니다.
5-7절 첫 번째 메시지는 하나님은 강한 능력과 지혜로 온 천지를 창조하신 창조주라는 것입니다.
땅과 사람과 짐승은 예레미야서에 자주 등장하는 3요소 구절three-member words 로 하나님이 이 세상에 창조하신 모든 피조물을 가리키는 용어입니다. 또한 하나님은 그것을 마음대로 주관하실 수 있는 권한이 있습니다. 내가 보기에 옳은 사람에게 그것을 주었다(5b절) 가 바로 하나님의 주권적 자유의지를 표현하고 있습니다.
두 번째로 하나님이 느부갓네살에게 이 모든 것(땅, 사람, 짐승)을 주어 하나님을 섬기게 하였습니다.
물론 느부갓네살이 하나님을 믿는 자는 아니지만, 하나님의 주권 안에 있다는 의미에서 하나님이 그를 내 종(6절) 이라 부릅니다. 하지만 그것은 그와 그의 아들, 그리고 손자에 이르는 3대까지만이라는 기한이 있습니다. 또한 많은 나라들과 큰 왕들이 그 자신을 섬기리라 는 시한이 차면 오히려 바벨론이 다른 나라를 섬기게 될 것이라는 예언입니다. 유진 피터슨은 다음과 같이 번역합니다.
그의 때가 다하여 세상이 뒤집힐 것이다. 그 때 바빌론은 패자가 되어 종으로 전락할 것이다.
여기서 분명한 것은 하나님이 온 세상의 역사를 주관하시는 분이라는 사실입니다. 세상의 권력을 세우고 내리는 것이 하나님의 손에 있습니다. 그러므로 역사의 흐름을 제대로 읽고, 그 흐름에 순종해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 내 생각대로 하다가는 역사의 주인에게 반기를 드는 상황이 될 수도 있기 때문입니다.
선택의 기로at a crossroads (8-11절)
그런 점에서 유다는 선택의 기로에 놓였습니다. 바벨론의 멍에와 줄을 거부할 것인가? 아니면 바벨론을 받아들이고 섬길 것인가? 만일 거부할 경우에는 8절의 상황이 이를 것입니다. 칼과 기근과 전염병은 예레미야가 자주 사용하는 수사법으로 완전한 멸망에 대한 표현입니다.
그러나 느부갓네살을 섬길 경우에는 이스라엘 땅에 머물며 살 수 있다고 예언합니다. 그들이 저항하는 이유는 약속의 땅을 지키기 위함인데, 결과는 오히려 살려고 하면 죽고, 죽으려 하면 사는 셈입니다.
유다로서는 매우 당황스러운 예언이 아닐 수 없을 것입니다.
우리나라 같은 경우로 치자면 일제강점기를 해석하는 역사관에 관한 것이라 할 수 있습니다. 민족주의적인 시각에서는 있을 수 없는 악한 일이지만, 더 큰 시각에서 볼 때 역사는 하나님의 뜻대로 움직이는 것입니다. 그러므로 인간의 입장에서, 또는 우리 민족, 우리 가족의 입장에서 밖에는 해석할 수 없는 좁은 시각으로 볼 때 선이냐, 악이냐 중요하지 않습니다. 원하든 원하지 않든, 또한 우리가 보기에 악이든 선이든 역사 속에서 사건은 일어나고, 그 역사는 아무 일 없듯 흘러 갑니다.
우리 인생은 그러므로 겸손해야 합니다. 역사 가운데 우리는 아무것도 할 수 없는 존재입니다.
만일 어떤 위인이 역사 가운데 엄청난 일을 이루었다면, 그것은 그저 그 분의 손안에서 그 분의 필요에 따라 쓰임 받은 존재였음을 알아야 할 뿐입니다. 악인이든 선인이든 말입니다.
우리의 올바른 선택을 방해하는 요소가 있습니다. 그것은 거짓 선지자와 그 아류들(복술가, 꿈꾸는 자, 술사, 요술사)입니다. 여전히 평안할 것을 말하고, 바벨론에 대항하라고 말합니다. 하지만 그 거짓을 따르는 순간 백성들이 원하지 않았던 고국 땅을 멀리 떠나는 결과를 얻게 될 것입니다.
우리는 먼저 역사의 주인이 누구인지 아는 것과 역사의 흐름을 읽을 수 있는 지혜가 필요합니다.
또한 세계와 역사의 패권을 가지고 계시는 하나님께 순종해야 합니다. 지금 이 세상에 벌어지는 일들에 대해서 하나에 기뻐하고, 하나에 슬퍼하는 즉각적인 반응을 할 필요가 없습니다. 역사의 패권이 하나님께 있음을 확신하고, 조용히 그분의 섭리providence와 오묘한 경륜 dispensation/economy을 바라봅시다!
사람의 마음에는 많은 계획이 있어도 오직 여호와의 뜻만이 완전히 서리라 (잠 19:21)
1 Early in the reign of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 This is what the Lord said to me: “Make a yoke out of straps and crossbars and put it on your neck. 3 Then send word to the kings of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre and Sidon through the envoys who have come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah. 4 Give them a message for their masters and say, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Tell this to your masters: 5 With my great power and outstretched arm I made the earth and its people and the animals that are on it, and I give it to anyone I please. 6 Now I will give all your countries into the hands of my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; I will make even the wild animals subject to him. 7 All nations will serve him and his son and his grandson until the time for his land comes; then many nations and great kings will subjugate him.
8 “‘“If, however, any nation or kingdom will not serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon or bow its neck under his yoke, I will punish that nation with the sword, famine and plague, declares the Lord, until I destroy it by his hand. 9 So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your interpreters of dreams, your mediums or your sorcerers who tell you, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon.’ 10 . 11 But if any nation will bow its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will let that nation remain in its own land to till it and to live there, declares the Lord.”’”
Korean netizens (online users) call America, a "cheon-jo" nation. The word "cheon-jo'' in Chinese is tianchao (天朝) which is an ancient East Asian concept originally used by the Chinese Zhou Dynasty, it means “the dynasty of heaven". In English translation, it is called the Celestial Empire. However, these days, this word is used to mean that the US defense expenditure is close to 1,000 trillion won. That is why it is called "cheon-jo" nation (千兆國) using "one thousand trillion" as a Chinese character representing numbers.
Anyhow, it is clear that the USA is a really great country as its annual defense budget is the same as those of the 2nd through 10th countries in the world all combined. Regardless of G8 or G2, the world hegemony is clearly held by the United States. Today's scripture is about this hegemony (supremacy). So who holds the world hegemony in his hand?
Lord of the Hegemony (verses 1-7)
Chapter 27 also begins with the word of God came to Jeremiah. It is written that the background of the time was early in the reign of Jehoiakim. What follows will tilt your head (wondering).
In 605 BC, King Necho, the Egyptian Pharaoh who Jehoiakim relied on, was defeated by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. Then, Jerusalem, which used to be a subordinate to Egypt, became a subordinate to Babylon.
At that time, all the young nobility of Judah were taken to Babylon, and Daniel and his three friends were among them.
Jehoiakim, who consistently opposed Babylon, was dragged like a beast after losing the war in 598 BC. Jehoiachin, son of Jehoiakim, became king of Judah but only reigned for 3 months before he was taken captive to Babylon in 597 BC.
Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon installed Josiah's son, Jehoiakim's younger brother and Jehoiachin's uncle Mattaniah, also known as Zedekiah, as the last king of Judah. This is the situation of the times in today's scripture.
Therefore the text "in the reign of Jehoiakim" (Korean Bible) was viewed as an error of the writer who copied the manuscripts of the Bible. The Peshitta (Syriac version), Arabic version, Masoretic text as well as English translations (NIV, RSV) begin with "early in the reign of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah".
Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, and the envoys of the kings of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre, and Sidon from neighboring countries gathered in Jerusalem. The lead was most likely King Zedekiah as the gathering location was Jerusalem. Jeremiah, wearing a yoke out of straps and crossbars on his neck, gave them the message of the Lord Almighty.
Verses 5-7 the first message is God made the earth with His great power and outstretched arm. The earth, people, and animals are "three-member words" that often appear in the book of Jeremiah, and refer to all the creatures God created in this world. And God has the authority to supervise them. "I give it to anyone I please" (v.5b) expresses God's sovereign free will.
The second message is God gave all (earth, people, and animals) into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar to serve Him.
Obviously Nebuchadnezzar was not a believer of God, yet he was under God's sovereignty as God called him my servant (v.6). However God put a deadline to Nebuchadnezzar's reign to only three generations, including him, his son, and his grandson. "Many nations and great kings will subjugate him" is a prophecy that Babylon will eventually serve other nations when the time comes. Eugene Peterson states as follows:
His time will be over and the world will be overturned,
when Babylon will become a loser and fall into slavery.
What is certain here is that God is in charge of the chronicle of the whole world. It is in the hands of God to establish and or to lower the power of the world. Therefore, we must properly read the flow of history, and obey it. Because acting on our own may lead to rebellion against the Master of history.
At a Crossroads (verses 8-11)
In that sense, Judah was at the crossroads of choice. To reject Babylon's yoke and straps? Or to accept Babylon and serve them? If they reject, then verse 8 is the outcome: the sword, famine and plague are Jeremiah's frequent rhetoric and expressions of total destruction. However, if Judah serves Nebuchadnezzar, they can remain in the land of Israel. The reason Judah resisted is to protect the Promised Land, but the result is that if they try to live, they die; and if they try to die, they live.
It must have been a very troublesome prophecy for Judah. In the case of Korea, it is about a view of history that interprets the Japanese colonial period. It was an evil act that should not have been done from a nationalistic perspective, but from a larger perspective, history flows according to God's will. Therefore, it does not matter whether it is good or evil when viewed from a narrow perspective that can only be interpreted from the standpoint of human beings or from our people and our families. Whether we want it or not, and whether it is evil or good in our view, events will happen in history, and the history flows as if nothing happened. Our life therefore must be humble. In history, we are unable to do anything. If a great man has done an exceptional job in history, it is only necessary to know that it was a being used in His hands for His needs. Whether he/she was wicked or good. There are factors that hinder our choice. Those are false prophets, diviners, interpreters of dreams, mediums or the sorcerers. They speak of peace and advise to stand up against Babylon. However, the moment they follow that lie, the result will be that Judah would leave far from their lands against their will.
We first need to know who the Master of history is and the wisdom to read the flow of history. And we must obey God who holds the hegemony of the world and history. There is no need to immediately respond, rejoicing in one and mourning for another, to what is happening in the world right now. Convinced that God has the supremacy of history, let us quietly look to His providence and dispensation!
Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails
