3:1 이러므로 그리스도 예수의 일로 너희 이방인을 위하여 갇힌 자 된 나 바울이 말하거니와
1 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles—
3:2 너희를 위하여 내게 주신 하나님의 그 은혜의 경륜을 너희가 들었을 터이라
2 Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you,
3:3 곧 계시로 내게 비밀을 알게 하신 것은 내가 먼저 간단히 기록함과 같으니
3 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly.
3:4 그것을 읽으면 내가 그리스도의 비밀을 깨달은 것을 너희가 알 수 있으리라
4 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,
3:5 이제 그의 거룩한 사도들과 선지자들에게 성령으로 나타내신 것같이 다른 세대에서는 사람의 아들들에게 알리지 아니하셨으니
5 which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.
3:6 이는 이방인들이 복음으로 말미암아 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 상속자가 되고 함께 지체가 되고 함께 약속에 참여하는 자가 됨이라
6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.
3:7 이 복음을 위하여 그의 능력이 역사하시는 대로 내게 주신 하나님의 은혜의 선물을 따라 내가 일꾼이 되었노라
7 I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power.
3:8 모든 성도 중에 지극히 작은 자보다 더 작은 나에게 이 은혜를 주신 것은 측량할 수 없는 그리스도의 풍성함을 이방인에게 전하게 하시고
8 Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ,
3:9 영원부터 만물을 창조하신 하나님 속에 감추어졌던 비밀의 경륜이 어떠한 것을 드러내게 하려 하심이라
9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.
3:10 이는 이제 교회로 말미암아 하늘에서 있는 통치자들과 권세들에게 하나님의 각종 지혜를 알게 하려 하심이니
10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms,
3:11 곧 영원부터 우리 주 그리스도 예수 안에서 예정하신 뜻대로 하신 것이라
11 according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.
3:12 우리가 그 안에서 그를 믿음으로 말미암아 담대함과 확신을 가지고 하나님께 나아감을 얻느니라
12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.
3:13 그러므로 너희에게 구하노니 너희를 위한 나의 여러 환난에 대하여 낙심하지 말라 이는 너희의 영광이니라
13 I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.
고통을 받을 때, 힘들 때 우리는 무엇을 하나요?
저는 너무 힘들어질 때 어쩔 땐 비디오 게임을 합니다.
비디오 게임이 뇌에 좋다는 것을 알고 계셨나요? 저는 아내에게 비디오 게임이 건강에 좋다고 설득하려고 합니다. 신경학자들에 따르면, 비디오 게임은 뇌의 Gray area 란 곳을 증가시킨다고 합니다. 이 Gray area 는 움직임, 기억, 감정을 위해서 필요합니다. 그리고 어린 아이들의 경우, 비디오 게임을 많이 하는 아이들은 좋은 사회적 기술을 가지고 있으며 학업적으로 더 잘 하며 동료 학생들과의 관계도 더 좋습니다. 물론 무언가를 너무 많이 하는 것은 좋지 않습니다. 너무 많이 먹는 것은 나쁩니다. 너무 많이 자는 것도 나쁩니다. 너무 과도하게 공부하는 것도 나쁩니다.
그래서 우리는 종종 세상의 것들에서 기쁨을 찾습니다. 그러나 바울은 다른 무언가에서 기쁨을 찾았습니다.
What do we do when we suffer?
For me when I feel like everything is too much of a burden, I just play video games.
Did you know that video games are good for your brains? I try to persuade my wife saying video games are good for you. According to neurologists, video games increase the amount of grey matter in your brain. The grey matter is responsible for control movement, memory, and emotions. And for our younger kids, studies show those who played more video games have good social skills and perform better academically, and have better relationships with their fellow students. Of course doing too much of anything would be bad. Eating too much is bad. Sleeping too much is bad. Studying way too much is also bad.
So we tend to find joy in worldly things. However, Paul found joy in something else.
예수의 죄수. 이방인들을 위한 복음 (V.1-2)
1절에서 NIV 성경에서 바울은 자신을 '예수 그리스도의 죄수'라고 부릅니다. 한국어 번역에서는 그저 '이방인을 위하여 갇힌 자'라고 부릅니다. 원래 헬라어로는 '예수 그리스도의 죄수'라고 합니다. 그래서 이 경우에 NIV가 더 정확합니다. 그런데 왜 바울은 자신을 예수 그리스도의 죄수라고 부르는 것일까요? 그 때 바울은 집 안에서 연금되어 있을 때 로마인에 의해 감금되어 있었습니다. 그렇다면 로마인의 죄수라고 부르는 것이 더 정확하지 않았을까요? 당시 바울은 병사의 감독하에 집 주위를 자유롭게 걸을 수 있었습니다. 그러나 밤에는 병사에게 쇠사슬로 묶여서 밤에 도망치지 못하도록 했습니다. 세상의 눈에는 바울이 로마인의 죄수라고 부르는 것이 더 정확합니다. 그러나 바울은 예수 그리스도를 주로 여기고 로마 정부를 주로 여기지 않았기 때문에 자신을 예수의 죄수라고 봤습니다. 그리고 디모데후서 2장에서 바울은 이방인에게 복음을 전파하기 위해 감옥에 있었다고 설명합니다. 오늘의 성경에서도 바울은 이방인들을 위해 그렇게 했다고 말합니다. 그러므로 바울이 감금되어 있을 때 하나님의 일을 하고 있었기 때문에 자신을 예수 그리스도의 죄수라고 부른 것입니다.
Prisoner of Jesus. Gospel for the Gentiles (V.1-2)
In Verse 1, in the NIV bible, he calls himself the prisoner of Christ Jesus. In the Korean translation, he just calls himself a prisoner. In the original Greek text, he calls himself the prisoner of Christ Jesus. So, in this case the NIV is more accurate. But why does he call himself a prisoner of Christ Jesus. During this time when he was under house arrest, he was imprisoned by the Romans. So shouldn’t he have called himself a prisoner of the Romans? During that time Paul had the freedom to walk around the house with the supervision of soldiers. However, during nighttime, he was chained to a soldier so that he wouldn’t run away at night. Through the eyes of the world, it is more accurate to say that Paul is a prisoner of the Romans. However, Paul saw himself as a prisoner of Jesus because he knew that Jesus was his Lord and not the Roman Government. And in 2 Timothy 2, Paul explains that he was in prison for preaching the Gospel to the Gentiles. And also in today’s scriptures, Paul says for the sake of you Gentiles. Therefore, since Paul was doing the work of God when he was imprisoned, he called himself a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
비밀 (V.3-11)
3절에서 우리는 오늘의 성경에서 여러번 반복되는 단어를 볼 수 있습니다. '비밀'이라는 단어는 3-9절에서 4번 나옵니다. 그러면 이 비밀은 무엇을 의미하는 것일까요? 존 스토트 목사님은 비밀에 대해 다음과 같이 말했습니다:
영어에서 '비밀'은 어두운 것, 불투명한 것, 비밀스러운 것, 퍼즐 같은 것을 의미합니다. '묘한' 것은 설명할 수 없고, 심지어 이해할 수 없습니다. 그러나 그리스어 단어 묘스테리온은 다릅니다. 아직도 '비밀'이지만 더 이상 철저하게 지켜지지 않고 공개되어 있습니다... 더 간단하게 말하면, 묘스테리온은 인간의 지식이나 이해에서는 숨겨진 진실이지만 이제는 하나님의 계시에 의해 드러난 것입니다.
그러므로 비밀은 인간의 관점에서 숨겨진 지식이나 설명할 수 없는 것을 의미하지만 하나님의 계시에 의해 드러나게 됩니다. 예를 들면, 하나님의 사랑은 비밀입니다. 우리는 사랑이 무엇인지 알고 있지만 일정한 정도까지만 압니다. 또한 삼위일체도 그렇습니다. 우리는 삼위일체가 무엇인지 알고 있지만 이해하기는 어렵습니다. 왜냐하면 논리적으로는 말이 되지 않기 때문입니다. 그래서 그것을 하나님의 비밀이라 부릅니다. 우리는 하나님에게서 계시를 받고 음성을 들을 때에 이 비밀을 정말로 이해할 수 있습니다.
오늘 본문 통해 우리는 비밀의 4가지 특성을 볼 수 있습니다: 계시에 의해 알려져 있음(V.3), 그리스도로부터 왔음(V.4), 유대인과 이방인이 신자로서 평등함을 관련시킴(V.6), 과거에 숨겨진 것을 드러냄(V.9).
이제 유대인과 이방인 사이의 구분이 사라졌기 때문에 바울은 이방인들에게 측량할 수 없는 그리스도의 풍성함을 전하는 임무를 맡았습니다(V.8). 바울은 모든 사람들이 지금까지 숨겨져 있던 하나님의 놀라운 비밀들을 보게 하고 싶었습니다.
The Mystery (V.3-11)
In Verse 3, we see a word that is repeated throughout today’s scriptures. The word ‘mystery’ comes out 4 times in verses 3-9. So what is this mystery referring to? Pastor John Stott said the following about what mystery is:
In English a ‘mystery’ is something dark, obscure, secret, puzzling. What is ‘mysterious’ is inexplicable, even incomprehensible. The Greek word mysterion is different, however. Although still a ‘secret’, it is no longer closely guarded but open… More simply, mysterion is a truth hitherto hidden from human knowledge or understanding but now disclosed by the revelation of God.
So mystery is referring to knowledge hidden or inexplainable from the human point of view but revealed by the revelation of God. For example, the love of God is a mystery. We know what love is but only to a certain degree. And also the trinity. While we have an idea of what the trinity is, it is beyond our understanding because logically it doesn’t make sense. So that’s why its called a mystery. We can truly understand this mystery when God reveals them to us.
Through the scriptures, we see the 4 different characteristics of the mystery: made known by revelation (V.3), came from Christ (V.4), involved Jews and Gentiles in equality as believers (V.6), and revealed something hidden in the past (V.9)
Since now the wall of separation is gone between the Jews and the Gentiles, Paul is on a mission to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ (V.8). Paul wanted everyone to see the wonderful things that God has done, which was hidden until now.
고통 속에서의 기쁨 (V.12-13)
바울은 사역하면서 많은 고통을 받았지만 고통속에서 기쁨을 찾았습니다. 어떻게요? 바울은 하나님이 선하시고 은혜로 가득하시다는 것을 알았기 때문입니다. 이것이 바울이 세상이 그를 막으려고 할 때에도 계속해서 복음을 전파했던 이유입니다. 우리의 하나님은 선하신 분인줄 믿습니다. 완벽한 분이십니다.
그러면 고통이 우리에게 다가올 때 우리는 무엇을 해야 할까요? 세상은 고통을 피하려고 할겁니다. 그것을 건너뛰려고 할겁니다. 그들은 피하면서 먼 길을 가려고 할 수도 있습니다. 처음부터 어떤 고통도 겪지 않으려고 쉬운 길을 선택할 수도 있습니다.
하지만 우리는 그리스도인으로써 어떻게 해야할까요?
나에게 이르시기를 내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여짐이라 하신지라 그러므로 도리어 크게 기뻐함으로 나의 여러 약한 것들에 대하여 자랑하리니 이는 그리스도의 능력이 내게 머물게 하려 함이라 (고후 12:9)
우리가 너무 많이 고통 받는 이유는 하나님을 제대로 이해하지 못하기 때문입니다. 어떤 문제로 고통받을 때, 우리가 그 문제를 우리의 힘으로 해결하려고 하면, 그것은 완벽하게 해결될까요? 가끔은 그렇게 될 수 있습니다. 그러나 대부분의 경우 완벽하게 해결되지 않을 것입니다. 만약 우리가 이 모든 것을 우리의 힘으로만 시도한다면, 하나님께서 우리를 도와주실 수 없습니다. 그러나 우리가 잠잠히 있으면서 하나님 앞에서 몸과 마음을 다하게 되면, 하나님께서 오셔서 우리 안에서 움직이실 것입니다. 하나님께서는 우리에게 은혜와 자비를 베풀기 시작하실 것입니다. 교회로서 어떤 파도가 우리에게 닥쳐와도, 우리는 모두 그리스도와 함께 승리할 수 있기를 축복합니다.
Joy in Suffering (V.12-13)
Although Paul was suffering, he was finding joy in the suffering. Why? Paul knew God is good and that God is full of grace. This is why he continued to spread the Gospel although the world was trying to stop him. God is good! He is a perfect being!
If this is the case, what should we do when suffering comes our way? They would first try to avoid it. They might try to jump across it. They might try to take a detour and go the long way They might try to take the easy way to try to not run into any suffering in the first place.
But how should we act as Christians?
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. (2 Corinthians 12:9)
The reason why we suffer so much is because we don’t understand God. When we are suffering with something, and we try to solve it with all of our strength, does it get solved perfectly? Sometimes, it might. However, most of the time, it won’t be solved. If we try do all of these things by our own strength, God will not be able to work. But when we are still and immerse in the presence of God, God will come and move within us. God will start showering grace and mercy upon us. I hope as a church, no matter what kind of waves come our way, we will all be victorious with Christ on our side.
