20240326 [특새묵상] 예수님의 기도와 우리의 기도 | The Prayer of Jesus and Our Prayer (눅/Lk 22:39~53)

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”

Jesus Arrested

47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.

52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.”

In end-of-the-world movies, the reactions of people as the end of the world approaches are often well depicted. They may spend the last remaining hour together with their loved ones or do things they haven't done before. The last hour before the destruction of the earth or facing death is perhaps the most important time, yet also the most precious time when not a single minute can be wasted.

Luke 22:39-23 shows in detail the final journey of Jesus towards his sacrificial death. From Jesus' prayer at the Garden of Gethsemane, which confirmed his trust in God, to his burial in Joseph of Arimathea's tomb, it vividly shows how the innocent one came to die for others.

In the situation of today's passage, Jesus had little time left. After the Last Supper, he was about to be apprehended through Judas Iscariot and face suffering. In the last remaining hour, what did Jesus do? He did not do things like those in movies, seeking out someone they love or doing things they hadn't done before. Instead, Jesus "followed the habit of prayer" in the final hour.

Luke 22:39 says, "And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him." The Lord, who always prayed without ceasing, prayed fervently even in his final moments. How did Jesus pray and what kind of prayer is he teaching us?

1. Jesus prayed fervently. (Verses 39-46)

Jesus went up to the Mount of Olives singing praises. He always prayed, and this time, he prayed fervently.

The honesty shown by Jesus in prayer demonstrates how deep and high the relationship between Jesus and God is. For Jesus, this is a very important moment.

Yet, just before being arrested, Jesus did not show human thoughts or behavior, but instead, he was solely focused on God as usual. In verses 41-42, in Jesus' prayer itself, we see his agony. We also see Jesus' desire to pursue God's will, even if it means giving up his life.

Jesus' prayer shows deep anguish, with sweat like drops of blood as he fervently prays with his head buried in the ground. Jesus offered his life as a ransom for many, facing the cross. However, the disciples, unaware of how critical this moment is, are shown sleeping.

Just before Jesus prayed, he told the disciples in verse 40, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation." Regarding what Jesus demanded of the disciples, we get the feeling from verse 40 that he is saying, "I will set an example, so you must pay attention to it."

As the moment of death approaches, Jesus pours out all his emotional fears, fears, and difficulties without hiding anything at the altar of prayer. What does the word "prayer" mean to each of us? Prayer is an important thing for me and you, leading us to a place of union with God and being guided by God's presence with us.

Jesus' command to "pray" is recorded in the Greek as a present imperative, indicating continuous prayer, not just praying once. By continuously relying on God, we can see how to avoid the trials that come into our lives.

Through prayer, Jesus brings all his pain and needs to God. Jesus' habit of communicating with God is not something that suddenly appeared one day. Often, because life is busy, we become negligent in taking time to bring our needs, difficulties, and frustrations before God.

We approach prayer with an attitude and mindset like "Gone with the Wind". Saying things like, "I'm tired today, I'll do it tomorrow," or "Even if I don't do it for a day, God will know," we may become complacent and postpone prayer until tomorrow, eventually forgetting what we intended to pray for.

Furthermore, the hardships in life can sometimes make us hesitant to come to prayer, and the complacent life of being content with the present situation or doing nothing, as well as the mundane tasks of daily life, can also prevent us from coming to prayer for various reasons.

However, Jesus did not do so. The life of the Lord shows us, even in the most difficult times, the importance of prayer. And prayer is not simply a formal checkmark of showing up to pray at every worship service.

Jesus' prayer is one of honesty, fervency, and laying everything bare without hiding anything. We often focus on appearances or the outward form of prayer. But now, I hope that through true sincerity and fervency, the content of honest prayer will be expressed on our lips.

2. Application of Prayer. (Verses 47-53)

Jesus' arrest means he is soon to experience the cup of death. Jesus, obeying the will of God, will not allow any attempt to escape from this situation. The incident of healing the ear of the high priest's servant, Malchus, in verses 50-51, is the last miracle recorded in the Gospel of Luke.

Ironically, even in the last moment, Jesus extends healing to those who came to apprehend him. Furthermore, Jesus criticizes the inappropriate manner of arrest by those who came to arrest him. They treated Jesus like a thief, and Judas, with a kiss, came close to betray him.

This passage emphasizes how deep the pain of betrayal is by narrating Judas as one of the twelve. The expression of affection, the kiss, became a sign of betrayal in terms of respect and love. Then in verse 48, Jesus points out the distortion of such intimacy in his question, "Do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"

The cross achieves exactly the opposite of what the powers of darkness desire. Although all current circumstances may seem to be progressing as orchestrated by the Jewish leaders, the one truly orchestrating all things is none other than God and Jesus.

We see Jesus applying prayer after his fervent prayer and honest prayer, showing us how he deals with the dangers and fears that come to him. Our prayers should not end with just praying. After praying and sharing deep fellowship with the Lord, and after pouring out everything before the Lord, we should live according to the heart and will of the Lord. This is what we believe is the application of our prayers.

Beloved saints!

Calvary may involve pain, trials, and tribulations. We cannot escape all of these, and we must pass through the cross of Calvary. The victory of the cross of Calvary was achieved through the prayer of Gethsemane. We believe that our prayer should aim to restore and draw closer to the Father's relationship.

Jesus said to pray in order not to fall into temptation. What have been the form and content of your prayers so far? I hope that most of the prayers you have offered have not been worldly-centered prayers, prayers that keep the cross at a distance, or prayers that prioritize the pleasures of the flesh over my soul.

I hope that through this time of suffering and trial, your relationship with God will grow closer. Today, as in the passage, Jesus' prayer was fervent and obedient. You and I also need to pray with a fervent heart, yearning for a deeper relationship with God. Therefore, through such prayers of the heart, may we fulfill the will of God and draw closer to the kingdom of the Lord. Today, I hope that our prayers will become prayers of fervency and honest confession of the lips, just like those of Jesus.
