20240808 [새벽묵상] 사람은 신실하지 않지만 하나님은 신실하십니다 | Though People are Not Faithful, God is Faithful (왕하/2 Kings 20:12-21)

[Envoys From Babylon]

12 At that time Marduk-Baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent Hezekiah letters and a gift, because he had heard of Hezekiah’s illness. 13 Hezekiah received the envoys and showed them all that was in his storehouses—the silver, the gold, the spices and the fine olive oil—his armory and everything found among his treasures. There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.

14 Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked, “What did those men say, and where did they come from?”

“From a distant land,” Hezekiah replied. “They came from Babylon.”

15 The prophet asked, “What did they see in your palace?”

“They saw everything in my palace,” Hezekiah said. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”

16 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the Lord: 17 The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your predecessors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the Lord. 18 And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.”

19 “The word of the Lord you have spoken is good,” Hezekiah replied. For he thought, “Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?”

20 As for the other events of Hezekiah’s reign, all his achievements and how he made the pool and the tunnel by which he brought water into the city, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 21 Hezekiah rested with his ancestors. And Manasseh his son succeeded him as king.

We have been meditating on the story of Hezekiah all week. What kind of king was Hezekiah? He might be considered the most righteous king since Solomon. But when I say this, you might be puzzled. Hezekiah, the most righteous king? Didn't he receive punishment from God in today's passage? Yes, that's right. Hezekiah was a righteous king, but people are not faithful. Even though Hezekiah was a righteous king, he couldn't maintain his faithfulness to the end. Due to his pride, Hezekiah eventually sinned before the Lord. The only one who remains faithful to the end is God alone. Only God is faithful. Remember, people are not faithful, but God is faithful. Let me repeat: people are not faithful, but God is faithful.

So why are people not faithful? Let's examine this through Hezekiah. First, we need to understand how righteous a king Hezekiah was. The book of Kings introduces Hezekiah like this: 2 Kings 18:5-7 "Hezekiah trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him. He held fast to the Lord and did not stop following him; he kept the commands the Lord had given Moses. And the Lord was with him; he was successful in whatever he undertook."

He did not follow in the footsteps of his father Ahaz, who was one of the most wicked kings. Instead, he drove out all idolatry from Judah and restored worship in God's temple. Chronicles describes the revival of worship he initiated: 2 Chronicles 30:26-27 "There was great joy in Jerusalem, for since the days of Solomon son of David king of Israel there had been nothing like this in Jerusalem. The priests and the Levites stood to bless the people, and God heard them, for their prayer reached heaven, his holy dwelling place."

What an amazing statement this is. Hezekiah was an incredible man of faith. But, when your faith is at its strongest, there's something you need to be most careful about. It's the rising of your heart. When we're doing exceptionally well in our spiritual life and everything is going smoothly, our hearts can so easily become proud without us realizing it.

Let's look at today's passage. Verse 12: "At that time Marduk-Baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent Hezekiah letters and a gift, because he had heard of Hezekiah's illness." The king of faraway Babylon heard about Hezekiah. The passage says he heard about Hezekiah's illness, but in Isaiah, it says he heard that Hezekiah had recovered from his illness, and in 2 Chronicles, it says he inquired about the sign that had occurred in the land. What does this mean? God's miracle came upon Hezekiah, he recovered from his illness, and as a sign, the shadow of the sun went back ten steps. The king of Babylon heard about this miracle of God from that far-off land and sent letters and gifts through messengers.

Now, if you were Hezekiah, what would you do? Ah, of course, you should talk about God. You should give glory to God and talk all night about how amazing God is, praising and worshiping Him together, right? But what does Hezekiah do? Verse 13: "Hezekiah listened to them and showed them all that was in his storehouses—the silver, the gold, the spices and the fine olive oil—his armory and everything found among his treasures. There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them."

What are you doing, Hezekiah? He's boasting about himself, not about God. He's revealing his own glory, not God's glory. His heart has become proud. 2 Chronicles 32:24-25 says, "In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. He prayed to the Lord, who answered him and gave him a miraculous sign. But Hezekiah's heart was proud and he did not respond to the kindness shown him; therefore the Lord's wrath was on him and on Judah and Jerusalem."

Hezekiah's heart became proud, and he did not repay the kindness shown to him by God. This is the nature of human hearts. The person who was weeping and praying desperately yesterday because of a fatal illness forgets what God has done once they are healed and the problem is solved. And then, when messengers come from a distant country, a country that poses no threat of war, a new country that seems easy to look down upon, he unconsciously becomes puffed up. The self becomes more important than God. He wants to reveal himself. When the self becomes more important than God, that is pride.

Even when Isaiah delivers God's judgment to Hezekiah, Hezekiah shows a self-centered attitude. Let's look at verse 19: "The word of the Lord you have spoken is good," Hezekiah replied. For he thought, "Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?" Even if God's judgment is coming, as long as it doesn't come to him, he thinks it's not his problem. Even someone who was so faithful and relied on God can so easily lose that faithfulness. People are not faithful. People cannot be faithful.

Then what about God? Is God faithful? Yes, God is faithful. If you look at verses 14-15, Isaiah comes to Hezekiah and asks: What did they say, and where did they come from? What did they see in your palace? Did he really not know and that's why he asked? No, God would have already told him. Then why does he ask, even though he knows everything? When you raise children, there are times when you know everything but still ask your kids, right? Why do you do that? You're giving them a chance. Speak well, right? When Hezekiah took God's glory for himself, God could have judged Hezekiah immediately. But God doesn't do that. Why? He's giving him a chance. Because God is merciful, gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in love and faithfulness, He acts faithfully according to His character. So He asks through the prophet Isaiah.

God's mercy is revealed even in His judgment. Let's read verses 17-18 together: "The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your predecessors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the Lord. And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon."

If you look closely at this judgment, you'll see that although Hezekiah committed the sin, he actually escapes this judgment. This shows both God's mercy and His faithfulness. Do you remember? When God healed Hezekiah, He promised him 15 more years of life. God is keeping that promise. Of course, this judgment will be carried out in the distant future, but Hezekiah probably knew that he wouldn't suffer any harm because God would faithfully keep His promise.

God's faithfulness is also revealed in this prophecy. Verse 17 says that everything Hezekiah showed to the Babylonian envoys will be taken as plunder to Babylon, and nothing will be left. "Everything" and "nothing will be left" are emphasized twice. However, in verse 18, it says that some of the king's own sons will be taken away and become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon. It's not all of his sons, but some of them. Even while God is foretelling the destruction of Judah and that everything will be taken away, He says He will continue the royal line. He will preserve the king's bloodline. Why? Because of the covenant He made with David. 2 Samuel 7:16 says, "Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever." Even in judgment, God is the One who keeps His promise to preserve David's offspring and his kingdom forever. God is so faithful. He is the One who keeps His promises.

To conclude, people are not faithful, but God is faithful. He keeps His promises and loves us according to His character. Where is God's faithfulness most clearly revealed? It's in Jesus, the son of David. As God promised, through Jesus' death on the cross, our sins are forgiven, and God's temple and kingdom are preserved forever, with the authority of Jesus as King established firmly forever. Even though humans lose their faithfulness by sinning before God, God never loses His faithfulness towards us. The only faithful one in this world is God alone. Let us all kneel before the faithful God and pray. Let us pray together, relying on His promised word.
