20240813 [새벽묵상] 하나님의 말씀으로 마음의 성전을 바로 세우라 | Build the Temple of Your Heart Right with God's Word (왕하/2 Kings 23:1-9)

23:1 Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 2 He went up to the temple of the Lord with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets—all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord. 3 The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord—to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.

4 The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in rank and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the Lord all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron Valley and took the ashes to Bethel. 5 He did away with the idolatrous priests appointed by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the towns of Judah and on those around Jerusalem—those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations and to all the starry hosts. 6 He took the Asherah pole from the temple of the Lord to the Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem and burned it there. He ground it to powder and scattered the dust over the graves of the common people. 7 He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes that were in the temple of the Lord, the quarters where women did weaving for Asherah.

8 Josiah brought all the priests from the towns of Judah and desecrated the high places, from Geba to Beersheba, where the priests had burned incense. He broke down the gateway at the entrance of the Gate of Joshua, the city governor, which was on the left of the city gate. 9 Although the priests of the high places did not serve at the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem, they ate unleavened bread with their fellow priests.

What does today's scripture say about people? How does it speak about the people, King Josiah of Judah and its leadership, and the people of Judah? What are they doing? In today's passage, King Josiah is described in 2 Kings 22:2 as "He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and followed completely the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left." He was a good king who sought to repair God's damaged temple. So he sent the scribe Shaphan to the high priest Hilkiah to request temple repairs. While Hilkiah was carrying out the king's order to repair the temple, he discovered the Book of the Law in the temple. He gave this book to the scribe Shaphan, who read it. Shaphan then returned to the king to report. He said the temple repairs were progressing in such and such a way. And then he said, "The priest Hilkiah has given me a book," and Shaphan read from the Book of the Law before the king. Then something amazing happened. 2 Kings 22:11 says, "When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes." People, there is amazing power in God's word. When we hear God's word, when it enters our hearts, it does new things we didn't know. People, build the temple of your heart right with God's word. I'll say it again. Build the temple of your heart right with God's word.

Today's main text begins with hearing God's word. Let's read verses 1-2 of today's text together: "Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. He went up to the temple of the Lord with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets—all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord." Now, what is Josiah doing? He's calling people together. He called together everyone in Judah and Jerusalem. Not just elders, priests, and prophets - these high-ranking people - but also the least of people, regardless of age, literally all the people. And he went up to God's temple and read all the words of the Covenant book found in the temple for the people to hear. Why did he do this? Why? Because he had directly experienced the power of God's word. 22:11 "When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes." God speaks like this in yesterday's passage about what happened when Josiah heard God's word. 22:19, "Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I have spoken against this place and its people—that they would become a curse and be laid waste—and because you tore your robes and wept in my presence, I also have heard you, declares the Lord." When Josiah heard God's word, he experienced the power of the word that softened his heart and made him humble before God. People, God's word has power to soften our hardened hearts and melt our stony hearts like snow. That's not all. The amazing word of God made Josiah realize not only his own sins that he hadn't known about, but also the sins of the previous kings. And as he realized these sins, he naturally came to understand God's judgment, which was the result of these sins. 22:13 "Great is the Lord's anger that burns against us because those who have gone before us have not obeyed the words of this book; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written there concerning us." People, what happened to Josiah, whose heart was softened and made aware of sin through the word? He humbled himself before God, tore his clothes, and wept. What is this? Repentance. This is the repentance that God's word brings about. People, listen to God's word. There is power in hearing the word. If you want to experience God's power, find a place to hear God's word. When you hear God's word, the temple of your heart will be built right.

The second way to build the temple of your heart right with God's word: When you hear the word and it enters your heart, decide to obey it. Decide to obey the word when you hear it. What did all the people of Judah do in today's passage after hearing the words of God's Book of the Law? Let's read verse 3 together: "The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord—to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant." All the people decided to follow that covenant. They made a promise, a vow to obey and follow God's word after hearing it. People, when you hear the word and God touches your heart, we must also respond to God's work. We must make a decision in our hearts. People, sometimes God's word pierces us. There are times when it pierces our hearts like a sharp sword and shows us what's inside us. Hebrews 4:12 says, "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." There are times when God's word divides our soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and reveals the thoughts and intentions of our hearts that we tried to hide. When that happens, decide to obey. When God's word enters your heart, decide to obey that word. When God illuminates what's in your heart through His word, obey. When you obey God's word, God will rebuild the temple of your heart.

The third way to build the temple of your heart right with God's word: We must remove the idols in the temple of our hearts. We must uproot the worldly values that have subtly crept into our hearts before God's word. Verses 4 to 9 of today's text show what happens after the people decide to keep their promise to God. They remove the idols that were prevalent among them. However, these idols were not in some distant, remote place. Surprisingly, they were in God's temple. Verse 4 says, "all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts" were "removed from the temple of the Lord." Verse 6 says, "He took the Asherah pole from the temple of the Lord," and verse 7 says, "He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes that were in the temple of the Lord." What does this mean? Not only did they worship all kinds of idols in God's temple, but they even built quarters for male shrine prostitutes. They worshipped all kinds of idols together in that holy temple meant for worshipping God, right in God's presence. But people, the people of Judah in the text probably thought they were serving God well. They had never stopped serving God since the temple was built. They had just become so accustomed to serving idols alongside God that they didn't even know what was wrong. People, how about you? Do you worship only God in His holy temple? Oh, of course, when you come to church, you probably worship only God. But people, the church is not the temple. You are the temple. 1 Corinthians 3:16 says, "Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst?" People, each one of you is God's holy temple where God's Spirit dwells. That's why you need to examine whether there are any idols in the temple of your heart. Just like the people of Judah in the text, are you perhaps serving idols like your desires, comfort, or success alongside God while claiming to serve Him? Have you perhaps become so accustomed to the world's standards that you don't even know what's wrong? That's exactly why we need to hear God's word. When we hear God's word, God will reveal the idols in our hearts that we didn't realize were there, the things we've believed in too familiarly. Just as the people of Judah heard God's word and discerned and removed the long-standing idols from God's temple, we too must hear God's word to be able to discern the idols within us, and by removing them, we can rebuild the temple of our hearts. When you hear God's word, the idols in your temple will be uprooted.

In conclusion, dear saints, build the temple of your heart right with God's word. Experience the power of the word by hearing it. When God's word knocks on your heart, obey that word. When God's word illuminates the idols in the temple of your heart, break the idols and serve only God. The temple of your heart will be built right in God. Desire God's word. Seek God's word. When you pray relying on God's word, God will build your temple right.
