20240828 [새벽묵상] 하나님의 나라에 합당한 자 됩시다 | Be Counted Worthy of the Kingdom of God (살후/2 Thess 1:1-12)

1 Paul, Silas and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

2 Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

[Thanksgiving and Prayer]

3 We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing. 4 Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.

5 All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. 6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you 7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might 10 on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.

11 With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith. 12 We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

"What does today's scripture say about God? And what does it say about people, humans? Today's text, 2 Thessalonians, is Paul's second letter to the church in Thessalonica. In Paul's first letter, 1 Thessalonians, he talked about how saved believers should pursue holiness as they look forward to the Lord's return. However, after Paul's first letter, it seems that false teaching had spread in the Thessalonian church that the day of the Lord had already come. The church must have been confused. The Thessalonian church, which was experiencing persecution and oppression, may have wondered if they were not saved if the day of the Lord had already come. They may have feared that the suffering they were currently experiencing was God's judgment after the Lord's return. So the Apostle Paul reassures the confused Thessalonian church, saying that the day of the Lord has not yet come, and that the suffering they are experiencing is for the kingdom of God. Then Paul says in verse 5, "This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God." To those who were anxious, wondering if they were not worthy of God's kingdom or if they were already receiving the punishment of judgment because the Lord had come, the Apostle Paul tells them that God's righteousness will be revealed through their suffering, and that this is "so that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God." That's right. When the Lord's kingdom comes, we must be considered worthy of God's kingdom. We must become worthy of God's kingdom. Then, through today's scripture, what is the kingdom of God and who are those worthy of that kingdom?

In today's text, there is mention of the kingdom of God, but no direct explanation of it. Therefore, we will try to get a glimpse of what kind of place the kingdom ruled by God is through the aspects of God revealed in today's scripture. First, God is the God of grace and peace. Paul greets, "Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ" (verse 2). And in verse 12 he says, "so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ." What does it say? According to the grace of God and the Lord Jesus Christ, Jesus' name receives glory in us. And according to His grace, we also receive glory in God. This is such great grace. It would be a great grace just for us to be able to exalt the Lord's name, but how much more that He says we will also receive glory in the Lord. In the kingdom of God, there is grace and peace.

Second, the kingdom of God is a righteous kingdom. God is righteous. In today's text, verse 5 says, "This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God," and verses 6-7 say, "God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well." God is merciful, gracious, and slow to anger, but because He is a God of righteousness, the wicked cannot ultimately escape God's judgment. And God's righteousness repays those who serve God with rest. With what? It says with rest. This is connected to the peace mentioned earlier. This is said to be God's righteousness.

Third, the kingdom of God is a kingdom where God's glory is revealed. What happens when the Lord comes? Let's look at verse 10: "on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed." And as we saw earlier in verse 12, "according to the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you." God's glory is God Himself. Because God is glorious, or rather, because He is so marvelous and glorious that I cannot even express it with my lowly mouth, just by encountering Him, we can only exalt God and be overwhelmed and amazed before God's glory. Doesn't today's scripture also say in verse 10, "to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed"? Participating in God's glory, giving glory to God - that is grace, and that is our reward. Then, who are those who are judged in today's scripture? Verse 9 says, "They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might." Being separated from God's face, from God's glory - that is eternal destruction and punishment. That is tribulation. That is death. Because the kingdom of God is where God's glory comes, those who depart from God's glory are not citizens of God's kingdom. What kind of place is the kingdom of God? It is a place full of God's grace and peace, God's righteousness, and God's glory.

Then, who are those worthy of God's kingdom? You have already heard much about this while talking about God's kingdom. Let me just highlight a few more points. First, they are those who believe the Word. Verse 10 says, "to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you." Hearing the Word and believing it, becoming a believer of the Word and obeying it - this is the first condition of being worthy. Let's look at verse 8: "He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus." What does it say? In verse 6, it referred to those who trouble you, but in verse 8, it says they are those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel. Those who hear the Word but cannot believe and do not know God, those who hear the Word but do not obey - these are not worthy of God's kingdom. Those who hear the Word and believe, those who obey that Word - these are those worthy of God's kingdom.

Second, those worthy of God's kingdom are those whose faith grows even more through endurance in the midst of suffering. Those who, because of that faith, abound in love and firmly strive to do good - in other words, those who act in faith. Verse 3 says, "your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing." Verse 4 says, "among all the persecutions and trials you are enduring." Verse 11 says, "that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith." Even in the midst of suffering, your measure of faith should grow more through endurance. So when you act in faith, love should abound in you, and your will to do good, that is, your determination to be good, should be strengthened even more. When you are in difficulty, especially when you are doing God's work but it becomes even harder, be patient. Through patience, let your faith grow even more. Even in difficulties, don't break your will to love one another and to do good. Didn't I say that God is righteous? God promises in verse 7, "and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This is evidence of God's righteous judgment." What is God's rest? It is entering God's kingdom, beholding God's glory, participating in God's glory, and according to God's grace, we too receive glory in God. Isn't it? God's grace and peace, and God's righteousness are promised to you. Even in suffering, grow your faith more through endurance. That is being worthy of God's kingdom.

I conclude the message. The kingdom of God - a kingdom where God's grace and peace dwell, a kingdom where rest from God's righteousness gives us peace, a kingdom full of God's glory where we believers marvel at Him, a kingdom where, by God's grace, the name of our Lord Jesus is glorified among us and we too receive glory. Don't you want to be worthy of that kingdom of God? Have faith. Believe the Word, become a believer, and through endurance in suffering, let that faith grow even more. I pray in the Lord's name that you all may become worthy of God's kingdom."
