20240829 [새벽묵상] 거짓에 미혹되지 말고 진리를 믿으라 | Don’t get Deceived by Lies but Believe the Truth (살후/2 Thess 2:1-12)

1 Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, 2 not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter—asserting that the day of the Lord has already come. 3 Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.

5 Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? 6 And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 7 For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, 10 and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

Today's scripture passage, what does it say about God? And what does it say about people, about humans? The church in Thessalonica mentioned in today's text seems to have been in confusion and fear. This was because a rumor had spread among them, in some unknown way, that the day of the Lord, the coming of Jesus Christ, had already arrived. So today, the Apostle Paul says to the Thessalonian church, "Let no one deceive you in any way." And he clearly states that "that day will not come" before certain events occur, making it clear that the Lord's coming had not yet arrived for the Thessalonian church. To the Thessalonian church, who were afraid that the day of the Lord might have already come, the Apostle Paul, through today's words, rather confirms that the day of the Lord is indeed the day of God's judgment against those who oppose the Lord, those who did not believe the truth but believed the lie. Therefore, they need not have their hearts shaken or be afraid. They have already received salvation by believing and loving the truth, so there is no reason for them to be deceived by anyone or anything. This is today's message. Dear believers, do not be deceived by lies, but believe the truth. You who love the truth have no reason to be deceived. Do not be deceived by lies, but believe the truth.

Do you remember the rapture commotion of the 90s? Or how about the Y2K scare that hit in 2000? Whether it was because of the unique atmosphere of the end of the century, or because of unexpected changes that occurred as many things shifted from analog to digital, issues like the end of the world were quite serious at the time. Looking back now, it's really ridiculous, and it's been over 24 years, but in fact, when I think about it, I don't think it's much different now than it was then. No, I think it might be even more serious now than it was then. Too much false information confuses you through KakaoTalk, Facebook, and the smartphone in your hand. The Thessalonian church seems to have been the same. Let's look at verse 2: "not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come." What does this mean? These are very credible sources. First, spiritual experiences like prophecies and visions. Second, the words of other believers. Third, writings said to be from the apostles. Aren't they all believable? Even I, as a pastor, sometimes receive such plausible fake news from senior believers I respect. At times like that, I too can be shaken for a moment. So how much more for you? But what does today's scripture say? Verse 3, "Let no one deceive you in any way." It says not to be deceived by anyone in any way. Then the Apostle Paul tells the Thessalonian church, which was being shaken by the claim that the day of the Lord had already come, what will happen before the day of the Lord comes. Let's look at verse 3: "For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction."

This verse is the core message of today. The message of today's text is all summarized in verse 3. Don't be deceived. The day of the Lord will not come before the man of lawlessness appears. In other words, don't be deceived because the day of the Lord has not yet come. The words from verse 4 to verse 12 are evidence proving that the day of the Lord has not yet come. Verse 5 says, "Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things?" This is not talking about the man of lawlessness. It's asking, don't you remember that I told you beforehand that these things must happen before the day of the Lord comes? In other words, it's asking, don't you know that the day of the Lord has not yet come? Verse 6 says, "And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time." This verse is saying, don't you know that even the man of lawlessness has not yet appeared? Then don't you know that the day of the Lord has not yet come? It's saying that you have no reason to be deceived, so don't be deceived.

But when we look at the text, we focus not on the message of not being deceived, but on the man of lawlessness. Since this man of lawlessness must appear before Jesus comes, who could this man of lawlessness be? Bill Gates? Elon Musk? The subject and object have been reversed. We are drawn to the man of lawlessness and think of him as if he were Jesus' opponent. However, if we read today's words carefully, the man of lawlessness is actually not that great. Verse 4 is a description of the man of lawlessness. He opposes God and exalts himself, claiming to be God. He seems to be a person with very strong self-assertion. However, as we saw together in verse 6, he cannot even reveal himself on his own. He is blocked from revealing himself or operating in the mystery of lawlessness. Then what happens when he finally breaks free from this blockage and reveals himself? It might seem like something great is about to happen, but verse 8 says, "And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming." The Lord doesn't even need to speak. It says He will kill him with the breath of His mouth. The man of lawlessness may be misunderstood as having some great symbolism or mysterious power, but in fact, he is destined to be killed as soon as he appears, and he is even blocked from appearing.

This, dear ones, is how Satan works. He has no power or ability. He cannot dare to oppose the Lord. If there's anything he can do, it's to deceive us. He is the one who misleads us. Let's look at verse 9: "The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing." What he does best is deceiving. He's a liar. He's the father of lies. We have no reason to pay attention to the man of lawlessness. Because he can do no harm to us who believe in the truth. That's why we have no reason to be deceived by him. We must not be deceived by lies but believe the truth. Because we who love the truth have no reason to be deceived by lies.

Then what is truth? Earlier, we said that we believe in the truth. We love the truth. What is truth to us, to you? What is truth that you believe in it and love it? Truth is God who was crucified on the cross. For me and for you. The Lord who came down from heaven Himself to forgive our sins and save us, who was crucified on the cross in our place, is the truth. That's why we believe in the Lord who died on the cross. We love the Lord who died on the cross. This is believing in the truth and loving the truth. We know the truth, believe in the truth, and love the truth, so we have no reason to be deceived by lies. Satan has no power or authority over us. We are not deceived by lies but believe in the truth.

In today's text, who are those who will perish? They refused to love the truth. Therefore, they did not receive salvation. Verse 10 says, "because they refused to love the truth and so be saved." They are in Satan's deception because they rejected the truth. Verse 12 says that God will judge all who did not believe the truth but delighted in wickedness.

To conclude, the Apostle Paul says, "Let no one deceive you in any way." The spirit of falsehood tries to deceive us in very plausible ways. But we are people who believe in the truth. We are people who love the truth. Therefore, we have no reason to be deceived by lies. If there are any among you whose hearts are shaken or afraid because of false news, hold on to the truth. Lift your eyes and see the Lord who was crucified for you. I believe that what frees us from what deceives us is believing in the truth and loving the truth. Dear ones, do not be deceived by lies, but believe the truth. I pray in the name of the Lord that you will be those who abide in the truth.
