20240830 [새벽묵상] 굳건하게 서서 가르침을 받은 전통을 지키라 | Stand Firm and Hold Fast to the Traditions that We were Taught (살후/2 Thess 2:13-3:5)

[Stand Firm]

13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.

16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

1 As for other matters, brothers and sisters, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you. 2 And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people, for not everyone has faith. 3 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. 4 We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.

Brothers and sisters, what does today's text say about God? And what does it say about people, about humanity? The Apostle Paul told the Thessalonian church, who were shaken and afraid by the false news that the day of the Lord had already come, not to be deceived by anyone in any way. He reminded them that the events preceding the day of the Lord - apostasy, the appearance of the man of lawlessness - had not yet occurred, making it clear that the news of the Lord's day having already come was false. He explained that falsehood is Satan's way of working, and described how those who are perishing dwell in all the deception of unrighteousness. He says that they were not saved because they did not believe the truth and did not love the truth.

Now, let's look at today's passage. If yesterday's passage was about those who are perishing, today's passage is about those whom the Lord loves. Let's look at verse 13 together. "But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord." What does he call them? Brothers beloved by the Lord. Yes, today's passage is about the church that the Lord loves. And to this church that the Lord loves, the Apostle Paul commands this in verse 15: "So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter."

That's right, everyone. We must stand firm and hold to the traditions we were taught. We must be steadfast in all good work and good word, continually acting as we were taught, abiding in God's love and participating in Christ's patience. We must stand firm and hold to the traditions we were taught.

So why must we stand firm and hold to the traditions we were taught? First, as I mentioned earlier, it's because God loves you. Because of that love, God chose you from the beginning. Let's look at verse 13: "But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth." Everyone, God loved you and chose you from the beginning. And what did He do? He says that He saved you through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. Salvation is not something we achieve. It is not accomplished by our efforts and our abilities. Salvation is received. Our salvation is something that God, loving you from the beginning, from eternity, chooses you and makes us believe the truth and sanctifies us by the Spirit.

If you look at verses 1-2 of chapter 3, when the Apostle Paul asks the Thessalonian church to pray for the apostles, he says this: "Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you, and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith." What does this mean? The Apostle Paul asks them to pray for the word to be spread to many people, but he says that faith is not given to everyone who hears the word. It's not a given that the word will be received with faith. Doesn't the Bible say that faith comes from hearing? If it's not a given that faith arises from hearing the word, how did our faith come about? The reason you receive the truth in faith is because you have been chosen by God. It is God's choosing. It is God's love for you. He chose you from the beginning to believe the truth, sanctify you by the Spirit, and save you. This is the first reason why we must stand firm and hold to the teachings we have received.

Second, we must stand firm and hold to the traditions we were taught because we are those who have believed the truth and been saved. In today's passage, the Apostle Paul says that the church is beloved by God. This means they are chosen by God, sanctified by the Spirit, and saved through belief in the truth. If you look closely, this is the opposite of those who are perishing, which we discussed yesterday. Who were those who are perishing? It's in verse 12 of the previous passage: "in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness." Those who are perishing are those who do not believe the truth, take pleasure in unrighteousness, and will be condemned. They dwell in Satan's lies and will perish when the day of the Lord comes. But we are not like that. We are those who are saved. They did not believe the truth, but we are those who believe the truth. They were those who loved unrighteousness, but we are those who have been sanctified by the Spirit. They are those who will be judged, but we are those who are saved.

In all this work of saving us, the triune God works together. God the Father chose you from the beginning, God the Son, the truth, died on the cross to atone for our sins, and God the Holy Spirit sanctifies you and leads you on the path of sanctification. This is how the triune God works together so that we can be saved. For this, the Lord has called us through the gospel. That gospel is the teaching we have received. When we stand firm and hold to the teachings we have received, to that tradition, God says that He will make us obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. It's in verse 14: "To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ." Therefore, we must stand firm and hold to the traditions we were taught.

Then, when we stand firm and hold to the traditions we were taught by the word and the Bible, how does God act towards us? Verses 16 and 17 say: "Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word." God, who has given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, comforts your hearts with that eternal comfort and establishes every good work and word that you try to do. In chapter 3 verse 5, we see that the Lord not only comforts our hearts with His eternal comfort but also guides our hearts. He guides us into God's love and Christ's steadfastness. Verse 5: "May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ."

When we try to stand firm and hold to the traditions we were taught as in today's passage, our faithful Lord who chose us does not abandon us but helps us. He comforts our hearts. He guides our hearts. And in His faithfulness, He establishes us and protects us from the evil one. Verse 3: "But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one." Then what should we do? We must stand firm and hold to the traditions we were taught, as the Apostle Paul commands today. Not just for today, but tomorrow and the day after, we must continue to stand firm until our Lord comes. The Apostle Paul said he was confident that we would continue to do so. Verse 4: "And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command."

To conclude, today we have received a command. We have clearly heard why we should follow the command, and through today's passage, we have heard about God's comfort, guidance, and faithfulness that help us when we follow that command. God's will for us is clear. We are God's beloved. We are the chosen ones. We are the saved ones. The Lord has called us to obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. But why does He specifically command us to stand firm? Isn't it because it's that difficult? However, if we stand firm and follow the teachings we have received according to tradition, the Lord says this: The faithful Lord will establish you. And He will guide you into God's love, Christ's steadfastness, and the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Stand firm and hold to the traditions you were taught. I bless you in the name of the Lord.
