2:11 내가 예루살렘에 이르러 머무른 지 사흘만에

2:12 내 하나님께서 예루살렘을 위해 무엇을 할 것인지 내 마음에 주신 것을 내가 아무에게도 말하지 아니하고 밤에 일어나 몇몇 사람과 함께 나갈새 내가 탄 짐승 외에는 다른 짐승이 없더라

[Nehemiah Inspects Jerusalem’s Walls]

11 I went to Jerusalem, and after staying there three days 12 I set out during the night with a few others. I had not told anyone what my God had put in my heart to do for Jerusalem. There were no mounts with me except the one I was riding on.


2:13 그 밤에 골짜기 문으로 나가서 용정으로 분문에 이르는 동안에 보니 예루살렘 성벽이 다 무너졌고 성문은 불탔더라

2:14 앞으로 나아가 샘문과 왕의 못에 이르러서는 탄 짐승이 지나갈 곳이 없는지라

2:15 그 밤에 시내를 따라 올라가서 성벽을 살펴본 후에 돌아서 골짜기 문으로 들어와 돌아왔으나

2:16 방백들은 내가 어디 갔었으며 무엇을 하였는지 알지 못하였고 나도 그 일을 유다 사람들에게나 제사장들에게나 귀족들에게나 방백들에게나 그 외에 일하는 자들에게 알리지 아니하다가

13 By night I went out through the Valley Gate toward the Jackal Well and the Dung Gate, examining the walls of Jerusalem, which had been broken down, and its gates, which had been destroyed by fire. 14 Then I moved on toward the Fountain Gate and the King’s Pool, but there was not enough room for my mount to get through; 15 so I went up the valley by night, examining the wall. Finally, I turned back and reentered through the Valley Gate. 16 The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, because as yet I had said nothing to the Jews or the priests or nobles or officials or any others who would be doing the work.


2:17 후에 그들에게 이르기를 우리가 당한 곤경은 너희도 보고 있는 바라 예루살렘이 황폐하고 성문이 불탔으니 자, 예루살렘 성을 건축하여 다시 수치를 당하지 말자 하고

2:18 또 그들에게 하나님의 선한 손이 나를 도우신 일과 왕이 내게 이른 말씀을 전하였더니 그들의 말이 일어나 건축하자 하고 모두 힘을 내어 이 선한 일을 하려 하매

17 Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” 18 I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me.

They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.


2:19 호론 사람 산발랏과 종이었던 암몬 사람 도비야와 아라비아 사람 게셀이 이 말을 듣고 우리를 업신여기고 우리를 비웃어 이르되 너희가 하는 일이 무엇이냐 너희가 왕을 배반하고자 하느냐 하기로

2:20 내가 그들에게 대답하여 이르되 하늘의 하나님이 우리를 형통하게 하시리니 종들인 우리가 일어나 건축하려니와 오직 너희에게는 예루살렘에서 아무 기업도 없고 권리도 없고 기억되는 바도 없다 하였느니라

19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official and Geshem the Arab heard about it, they mocked and ridiculed us. “What is this you are doing?” they asked. “Are you rebelling against the king?”

20 I answered them by saying, “The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it.”


 

여러분 오늘의 본문 말씀은 하나님에 대해 뭐라고 말씀하고 계십니까? 또 사람, 인간에 대해서는 뭐라고 말씀하고 계십니까? 오늘 본문 느헤미야의 말씀은 이미 이스엘과 유다가 멸망한지 100년도 더 지난 후의 이야기입니다. 열왕기상하를 통해서 보셨던 것처럼 하나님의 택하신 백성임에도 불구하고 하나님께 순종하지 않았던 그들의 죄악때문에 하나님께서 각각 이스라엘은 아시리아 제국으로 남유다는 바빌로니아 제국을 사용하셔서 그들을 심판하셨죠. 바빌로니아 제국은 유다를 멸망시킨후 별 볼일 없는 인원들을 제외한 대부분의 사람들을 바빌론으로 강제이주 시킵니다. 시간이 흘러 바빌로니아 제국은 페르시아 제국에게 멸망하고 그 페르시아의 왕은 다른 정책을 펼치게 됩니다. 바로 강제 이주된 각 민족들을 그들의 원래 고향으로 되돌려 보내는 것이죠. 4만여명의 돌아온 사람들은 우여곡절 끝에 무너졌던 성전을 다시 짓고 자기 고향에 정착을 하게 됩니다. 그 뒤로도 50여년이 더 흐릅니다. 그리고  본문의 말씀 느헤미야가 등장하게 되는 것입니다. 느헤미야는 당시 페르시아의 아닥사스다왕에게 술을 따라 올리는 사람이었습니다. 단순히 술을 따르는 것 뿐만 아니라 독살의 위험으로부터 왕의 안전을 지키며 왕이 결정을 내릴 때 조언을 구하는 왕의 최측근으로서 왕의 높은 신뢰를 받는 최고위직이었죠. 그런 그에게 예루살렘 성벽이 무너졌고 그 성문들이 불에 타서 백성들이 큰 고난과 수모를 당하고 있다는 소식이 전해지자 그는 하나님 앞에 주저앉아 금식하며 기도합니다. 그리고 약 4개월 뒤에 그는 왕의 허락을 받아 왕의 친서를 가지고 성벽의 재건을 위해 예루살렘으로 내려오게 됩니다. 그는 당시 세계 최강국 페르시아의 고위직에 있으면서도 하나님의 백성이라는 자신의 정체성을 잊지 않았습니다. 그리고 그는 하나님의 뜻을 이룬다는 열정과 뜨거움에 휩싸여 먼저 나아가지 않고 신중하며 지혜롭게 그 일을 시작합니다. 오늘 제가 하고 싶은 말씀은 이것입니다. 하나님의 백성으로 지혜롭게 행하라. 하나님의 백성으로 지혜롭게 행하라.


  What does today's scripture say about God? And what does it say about humans? Today's passage from Nehemiah is a story that takes place more than 100 years after the destruction of Israel and Judah. As we saw through 1 and 2 Kings, despite being God's chosen people, they were judged by God using the Assyrian Empire for Israel and the Babylonian Empire for southern Judah because of their sins of disobedience to God. After destroying Judah, the Babylonian Empire forcibly relocated most of the people to Babylon, except for some insignificant individuals. As time passed, the Babylonian Empire was destroyed by the Persian Empire, and the Persian king implemented a different policy. He decided to send the forcibly relocated ethnic groups back to their original homelands. About 40,000 returned people, after much hardship, rebuilt the fallen temple and settled in their homeland. Another 50 years passed after that. And then Nehemiah, the subject of today's passage, appears.


Nehemiah was a cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia at the time. Not only did he pour wine, but he was also in the highest position, trusted by the king as one of his closest advisors, protecting the king from the danger of poisoning and being consulted when the king made decisions. When he heard that the walls of Jerusalem had fallen and its gates had been burned, causing the people great distress and shame, he sat down before God, fasting and praying. Then, about four months later, he came down to Jerusalem with the king's permission and letter to rebuild the walls. Even though he was in a high position in Persia, the strongest country in the world at the time, he did not forget his identity as one of God's people. And he does not rush forward, overwhelmed with passion and fervor to fulfill God's will, but begins that work cautiously and wisely. What I want to say today is this: Act wisely as God's people. Act wisely as God's people.



오늘 말씀의 느헤미야를 통해 하나님의 백성으로 행하는 것은 어떤 것인지 함께 알아보기 원합니다. 첫번째, 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라. 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라. 여러분 제가 이미 앞에서 말씀드렸듯이 느헤미야는 이미 포로된 이방 백성 출신으로서는 아마도 유리 천장을 깨고 출세할 수 있는 최고의 자리에 올라갔던 것이 아닐까 생각해봅니다. 당시 세계를 지배하는 페르시아 대제국의 정점에 있는 왕의 술관원이었어요. 그럼에도 불구하고 그는 개인의 이익이 아닌 하나님 나라의 백성들을 위해 자기 자리를 기꺼이 내려놓고 직접 예루살렘으로 내려갑니다. 충분히 다른 사람을 세우거나 아니면 자신은 그 자리에 있고 재정만 흘려보내도 아무도 그에게 뭐라고 할 사람 없었어요. 이것만 해도 대단한 일이지요 그런데 여러분 제가 앞에 말씀드렸듯이 이게 이미 유다가 멸망한지 100년도 더 된 후의 이야기에요 141년이나 142년, 거의 150년 뒤의 이야기입니다. 여러분, 한국이 일제에게 강제로 점령당했던 기간이 약 35년입니다. 그런데도 아직도 우리 조국에는 친일의 잔재가 남아있지 않습니까? 여러분 이스라엘 백성도 마찬가지였어요. 페르시아의 고레스왕이 칙령을 내려 강제이주당한 이스라엘 백성들에게 너희 고향으로 돌아가서 하나님을 섬기면서 살아라 라고 했더니 4만여명밖에 안내려옵니다. 나머지 백성들은 이미 페르시아에 뿌리를 내리고 이방 땅 페르시아에 남아 살아요. 그리고나서도 50여년이 지난 뒤가 오늘 본문의 이야기입니다. 느헤미야에게는 사실 자기 신분이 드러나는 것조차 부끄러운 일이었을 수 있습니다. 그러나 그는 자신의 이익이 아닌 하나님의 나라와 그의 의를 구하지요. 오늘 말씀 이전 말씀들인 느헤미야 1장과 2장 초반의 말씀을 통해 그가 예루살렘 소식을 듣자마자 하나님께 금식과 기도로 민족을 위해서 회개하며 도우심을 구했던 것을 알 수 있습니다. 그리고 그는 기회가 왔을때 위험을 무릅쓰고 감히 왕께 예루살렘 성을 건축하게 해달라고 요청을 하지요. 이것은 죽음을 각오한 요청이었던 것입니다. 오늘 말씀에도 그는 목적이 명확합니다. 먼저 하나님의 나라와 그 의를 구하지요. 11-12절 보겠습니다. “내가 예루살렘에 이르러 머무른 지 사흘 만에 내 하나님께서 예루살렘을 위해 무엇을 할 것인지 내 마음에 주신 것을 내가 아무에게도 말하지 아니하고” 하나님께서 내 마음에 주신 것, 무엇입니까? 예루살렘을 위해 무엇을 할 것인지. 자신의 영달이 아닌 하나님의 나라 그 하나님의 나라를 위해 무엇을 할 것인지. 여러분 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하십시오.


Through Nehemiah in today's passage, I want us to learn together what it means to act as God's people. First, seek first His kingdom and His righteousness. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness. As I mentioned earlier, Nehemiah had probably risen to the highest position possible for someone of foreign captive origin, breaking through the glass ceiling. He was the king's cupbearer at the pinnacle of the Persian Empire, which ruled the world at that time. Nevertheless, he willingly gives up his position and goes down to Jerusalem directly for the people of God's kingdom, not for personal gain. He could have easily appointed someone else or just stayed in his position and sent financial support, and no one would have said anything to him. This alone is remarkable, but as I mentioned before, this story takes place more than 100 years after the fall of Judah - 141 or 142 years, almost 150 years later.


The period of Korea's forced occupation by Japan was about 35 years. Yet, aren't there still remnants of pro-Japanese sentiment in our homeland? It was the same for the Israelites. When Persian King Cyrus issued an edict allowing the forcibly relocated Israelites to return to their homeland and serve God, only about 40,000 came back. The rest of the people had already put down roots in Persia and remained living in that foreign land. Today's passage takes place about 50 years after that. For Nehemiah, even revealing his identity might have been embarrassing. However, he seeks God's kingdom and His righteousness, not his own interests.


Through the passages preceding today's text, Nehemiah 1 and the beginning of chapter 2, we can see that as soon as he heard the news about Jerusalem, he fasted and prayed to God, repenting for the nation and seeking help. And when the opportunity came, he risked danger and dared to request the king to allow him to rebuild the city of Jerusalem. This was a request made at the risk of death. In today's passage, his purpose is clear. He seeks first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Let's look at verses 11-12: "I went to Jerusalem, and after staying there three days I set out during the night with a few others. I had not told anyone what my God had put in my heart to do for Jerusalem." What God had put in his heart - what was it? What to do for Jerusalem. Not his own advancement, but what to do for God's kingdom. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.



하나님의 백성으로 지혜롭게 행하는 것, 두번째. 우리는 세상이 아니라 하나님 나라의 백성이라는 정체성이 분명해야합니다. 이는 앞에서 했던 이야기와도 일맥상통하는 이야기입니다. 느헤미야는 페르시아제국이라는 당시 세상에서 가장 강대했던 나라의 최정상에 위치한 사람임에도 자신의 정체성이 페르시아에 있는 것이 아니라 하나님 나라 안에 있다는 인식이 분명했습니다. 그가 예루살렘에 있던 이스라엘 백성들에게 성벽을 다시 건축하자고 설득할 때 그는 내 뒤에 왕이 있다. 이것은 왕명이다. 고로 나를 따르라 라고 말하지 않습니다. 18절 보시겠습니다. “또 그들에게 하나님의 선한 손이 나를 도우신 일과 왕이 내게 이른 말씀을 전하였더니” 그는 먼저 하나님께서 그에게 행하신 일을 백성들에게 나눕니다. 간증을 먼저 나눈거에요. 그 뒤에 왕에 대한 이야기를 합니다. 여러분 그냥 왕명이라고 하면 될 일이에요. 친서도 가지고 있습니다. 이렇게 높은데서 온 사람이 뭘 굳이 이런 어중이떠중이들에게 설명을 합니까? 아 나 저기 청와대에서 온 누군데, 한마디 하면 되는거에요. 그런데 그렇게 하지 않습니다. 그는 먼저 하나님께서 자신에게 무슨 일을 하셨는지 이야기해요. 왜 일까요? 그에게는 세상에서 왕의 최측근이었던 자신의 정체성보다 하나님 나라에서의 한 백성이라는 자신의 정체성이 더 앞섰던거에요. 그래서 그는 다른 하나님의 백성들에게 자신이 경험한 하나님이 어떤 분이신지를 먼저 나누는 것입니다.


Second, acting wisely as God's people means that we must have a clear identity that we are citizens of God's kingdom, not of this world. This is in line with what we discussed earlier. Although Nehemiah was at the pinnacle of the Persian Empire, the most powerful nation in the world at that time, he had a clear recognition that his identity was not in Persia but in the kingdom of God. When he persuades the Israelites in Jerusalem to rebuild the wall, he doesn't say, "The king is behind me. This is a royal decree. Therefore, follow me." Let's look at verse 18: "I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me." He first shares with the people what God had done for him. He shares his testimony first. After that, he talks about the king. He could have just said it was a royal decree. He had the king's letter. A person coming from such a high position could have just said one word to these ordinary people. "I'm so-and-so from the Blue House," would have been enough. But he doesn't do that. He first talks about what God had done for him. Why? His identity as a citizen of God's kingdom was more important to him than his identity as the king's closest advisor in the world. So he first shares with other people of God what kind of God he had experienced.



심지어 이런 그의 정체성은 19-20절 말씀에 더 분명히 드러납니다. 느헤미야가 오기전에 그 지역을 관리하던 산발랏과 도비야, 그리고 게셈이 얘기를 듣고 찾아와 비웃으며 말합니다. 19절 “우리를 비웃어 이르되 너희가 하는 일이 무엇이냐 너희가 왕을 배반하고자 하느냐 하기로.” 여러분, 이게 지금 왕을 배반하려고 하는 일입니까? 아니죠. 오히려 왕의 친서를 가지고 왔는데요. 오히려 느헤미야에게 대적하는 이들이 지금 왕명을 업신여기고 있는거 아닙니까? 자 그러면 여러분 같으면 뭐라고 대답하시겠습니까? 아니 이게 무슨 말 같지도 않은 소리야. 짜증나게 정말. 니네 이거 안보여? 이거 어명이야. 내가 입 한 번 뻥긋하면 니들 다 죽어. 한마디 하지 않으시겠습니까? 그런데 20절에 뭐라고 합니까? “내가 그들에게 대답하여 이르되 하늘의 하나님이 우리를 형통하게 하시리니 그의 종들인 우리가 일어나 건축하려니와 오직 너희에게는 예루살렘에서 아무 기업도 없고 권리도 없고 기억되는 바도 없다 하였느니라” 왕 얘기는 입에 담지도 않습니다. 하늘의 하나님이 우리를 형통하게 하시리니. 우리는 뭐에요? 그의 종들인 우리가 일어나 건축하려니와. 그들은 하늘의 하나님의 종들인 것입니다. 하나님 나라의 백성들인 것이에요. 그리고 이것은 하나님께서 하시는 일인 것입니다. 그래서 그들이 하나님의 뜻을 따라 건축하는 것입니다. 그렇기때문에 느헤미야에게는 하나님께서 그 백성들을 도우실 것이라는 확신이 있는 것입니다. “하늘의 하나님이 우리를 형통하게 하시리니.


This identity of his is even more clearly revealed in verses 19-20. When Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem, who had been managing the area before Nehemiah came, heard about this, they came and mocked, saying in verse 19, "What is this you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?" Is this an act of rebellion against the king? No. On the contrary, he came with the king's letter. Aren't those opposing Nehemiah actually disregarding the king's command? So, how would you answer if you were in this situation? Wouldn't you say something like, "What nonsense is this? This is really annoying. Don't you see this? This is a royal command. If I say one word, you're all dead." Wouldn't you say something like that? But what does he say in verse 20? "I answered them by saying, 'The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it.'" He doesn't even mention the king. "The God of heaven will give us success." What are we? "We his servants will start rebuilding." They are servants of the God of heaven. They are citizens of God's kingdom. And this is God's work. So they are building according to God's will. Therefore, Nehemiah is confident that God will help His people. "The God of heaven will give us success."



하나님의 백성으로 지혜롭게 행하는것, 세번째. 우리는 지혜롭게 행해야합니다. 비록 하나님의 일을 가지고 예루살렘에 왔더라도 느헤미야는 섣불리 행동하지 않습니다. 상황에 맞게 행동을 하지요. 그는 예루살렘에서 그가 오기전에 먼저 힘을 갖고 있던 사람들을 자극하지 않고 비밀리에 밤에 나와 예루살렘 성벽과 성문의 피해를 조사합니다. 그는 함부로 하나님께서 자신에게 주신 계획들을 발설하지 않습니다. 때를 기다립니다. 조사를 마치고 상황을 파악한 뒤 사람들에게 이야기 할 때에도 하나님의 이름을 빌어 순종을 강요하지 않습니다. 17절 보시겠습니다. “후에 그들에게 이르기를 우리가 당한 곤경은 너희도 보고 있는 바라 예루살렘이 황폐하고 성문이 불탔으니 자, 예루살렘 성을 건축하여 다시 수치를 당하지 말자 하고” 여러분 이 대화에 느헤미야는 없는 것입니다. 이스라엘 백성, 우리가 있습니다. 우리가 당한 곤경은 너희도 보고 있는 바라. 다시 수치를 당하지 말자. 우리를 이야기합니다. 사람들을 초청하는 것입니다. 그들이 처한 상황을 이해하고 함께 동역하자고 부르는 것입니다. 느헤미야는 하나님의 뜻에 대한 확신이 있었지만 그럼에도 불구하고 하나님의 이름을 빌어 사람들을 강요하지 않습니다. 그리고 나서 그는 하나님께서 그에게 어떻게 하셨는지를 그의 간증을 그 사람들에게 나눕니다. 그렇게 함으로 그는 그곳의 사람들이 하나님의 백성으로 함께 동역할 수 있도록 하는 것입니다. 하나님의 나라를 자신으로부터 사람들로 확장하는 것입니다. 


Third, acting wisely as God's people means we must act wisely. Although he came to Jerusalem with God's work, Nehemiah doesn't act rashly. He acts according to the situation. He doesn't provoke those who had power in Jerusalem before he came, but secretly comes out at night to inspect the damage to Jerusalem's walls and gates. He doesn't carelessly reveal the plans God had given him. He waits for the right time. Even when he talks to people after completing his investigation and understanding the situation, he doesn't use God's name to demand obedience. Let's look at verse 17: "Then I said to them, 'You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.'" In this conversation, Nehemiah is not present. There are the people of Israel, "we". "You see the trouble we are in." "Let us no longer be in disgrace." He talks about "us". He is inviting people. He understands their situation and calls them to work together. Although Nehemiah was confident in God's will, he doesn't use God's name to force people. And then he shares with those people how God had acted in his life, his testimony. By doing so, he enables the people there to work together as God's people. He is expanding God's kingdom from himself to the people.



말씀을 맺겠습니다. 여러분 하나님의 백성으로 지혜롭게 행하십시오. 여러분 먼저 그의 나라와 그 의를 구하십시오. 그것은 여러분이 세상에 속한 자가 아니라 하나님 나라에 속한 자임을 분명히 할 때 더욱 쉬워질 것입니다. 여러분이 세상에서 높은 자리에 있더라도 여러분의 정체성은 세상이 아니라 하나님 나라에 있음을 기억하십시오. 그리고 지혜롭게 행하십시오. 그렇게 하실 때 다른 하나님의 백성들과 함께 동역하며 하나님의 나라를 확장하실 수 있을 것입니다. 여러분, 하나님의 백성으로 지혜롭게 행하십시오.


Let me conclude the message. Act wisely as God's people. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness. This will become easier when you clearly understand that you belong to God's kingdom, not to this world. Remember that even if you are in a high position in the world, your identity is in God's kingdom, not in the world. And act wisely. When you do so, you will be able to work together with other people of God and expand God's kingdom. Act wisely as God's people.
