What does today's scripture say about God? And what does it say about people, about humans? Today's scripture, like yesterday's, lists the names of Israelites who participated in rebuilding and repairing the collapsed walls of Jerusalem and its burned gates. When Nehemiah, who was the cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia, heard that Jerusalem was in ruins and its people were suffering, he prayed to God and requested the king's permission to go down to Jerusalem to rebuild it. These people willingly said, "Let us rise up and build," and all put their efforts into participating in that mission.

Today's scripture is actually a summary. It's a record of who participated and what they did after the wall repairs were completed, written for the next generation. We will probably meditate on what actually happened during the rebuilding of the city and repairing of the gates starting from tomorrow's scripture.

The important thing is that the names of those who participated in the mission of rebuilding Jerusalem today are recorded in the Bible. They are remembered. Even now, 2500 years later, aren't we reading these people's names and meditating on what they did? Among the people mentioned in today's scripture, some repaired wide sections of the wall, some repaired not only one side of the wall but also another, and some only repaired the wall in front of their own houses. Although some may have participated more and some less, those who participated left their names.

Here is today's message: If we fulfill the mission given to each of us, God will remember. When we are given the mission of building the church wall, God gives each person a mission that fits them. And when we fulfill the mission entrusted to each of us, the wall is rebuilt, and our names remain in God's kingdom. Fulfill the mission given to each of you. God will remember.

What are some of the missions given to each person in today's scripture?

First, there are people who take on many tasks. Among the names recorded today, there are people who participated in rebuilding more than one section of the wall. The first of these is Meremoth son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, in verse 21: "Next to him Meremoth son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired another section, from the entrance of Eliashib's house to the end of it." Meremoth's name is also in verse 4 of yesterday's scripture. It says that Meremoth son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired the section from the Fish Gate. Meremoth is not the only one who repaired more than one place. The men of Tekoa in verse 27 also did: "Next to them, the men of Tekoa repaired another section, from the great projecting tower to the wall of Ophel." Their names also appear in verse 5 of yesterday's scripture: "The next section was repaired by the men of Tekoa, but their nobles would not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors." Interestingly, despite their nobles refusing to participate, they showed even more enthusiasm and rebuilt two places.

The names of those who participated in the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls are recorded in counterclockwise order from the Sheep Gate, making a full circle back to the Sheep Gate, but the actual rebuilding of the wall did not happen in that order. In tomorrow's scripture, Nehemiah 4:6, which explains how the wall was actually built, it says: "So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart." The entire wall reached half its height. This is an interim report. In other words, the wall was not rebuilt one by one in a counterclockwise direction as we read in yesterday's and today's names, but the entire wall was rebuilt simultaneously, dividing the work among everyone at once. If that's the case, then building multiple sections of the wall simultaneously, like Meremoth or the men of Tekoa that I just mentioned, is no ordinary task. It's an extraordinary dedication. Such dedication probably couldn't be done by someone else's order. It's a dedication that fulfills the mission despite internal opposition. It must have been voluntary dedication. There are people who voluntarily take on many tasks like this. When they fulfill the mission given to them, God remembers their dedication and hard work.

Second, fulfilling one's own part even in the midst of difficulties. If you look closely at the scripture, you can see that today's scripture is a bit different from yesterday's. Even though it's just a list of names, you can see that the ministry they did was slightly different. Yesterday's scripture dealt with the northeastern Sheep Gate where livestock used for sacrifices entered and exited near the temple, going counterclockwise along the western wall, passing through the Valley Gate, to the Dung Gate at the southernmost point of the wall where garbage like manure was taken out. And parts like verses 15 and 16 of today's scripture, where they repaired the Fountain Gate and connected it to the House of the Heroes, seem to have progressed relatively smoothly as they were repairing the original wall. However, the eastern wall mentioned in verses 17 to 26 was not repairing the original eastern wall, but building a new wall from scratch. Perhaps that's why from verse 20 onwards, the wall is built based on individual houses rather than characteristic buildings that would have originally been there. Verse 20: "Next to him, Baruch son of Zabbai zealously repaired another section, from the angle to the entrance of the house of Eliashib the high priest." Verse 21: "Next to him, Meremoth son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired another section, from the entrance to Eliashib's house to the end of it." Verse 23: "Beyond them, Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs in front of their house; and next to them, Azariah son of Maaseiah, the son of Ananiah, made repairs beside his house."

According to what an excavation team led by Dr. Kenyon discovered in 1962, this wall was built much higher on the hill facing the valley, much further inside than the original wall. Why did they do this? Why did they have to build it higher, and further inside than the original wall? It must have been for defense. They must have needed to protect the place where people actually lived nearby, rather than rebuilding the existing distant wall. By building a straight, short-distance wall instead of a wide, circuitous one, they reduced the construction time. This tells us that the situation was urgent enough to race against time. In fact, it took only 52 days to rebuild all these walls. They were under so many threats while building the wall. So they had no choice but to build this wall while defending themselves, holding a weapon in one hand and working with the other. Even in the midst of such threats and difficulties, they completed the mission given to them to the end. And they left their names in the Bible.

I conclude the message. Many Israelites joined in when they heard God's mission to rebuild the wall that Nehemiah brought. Some people voluntarily took on many tasks and fulfilled that mission, leaving their names. Some people fulfilled their given portion well even in the midst of difficulties, thus fulfilling that mission and leaving their names. And some people fulfilled that mission by doing as much as they could handle, and they too left their names in the Bible.

Now, what about you? The mission of God for our Hansarang Church has been conveyed to you through our Pastor Lim Eun-seok. How will you fulfill this mission? Some of you may voluntarily take on many tasks, and some of you may fulfill your given portion well even in your difficult situations. Some of you may fulfill that mission by doing as much as you can handle for now. But the important thing is that when you fulfill the mission given to each of you like this, God remembers what you do. And when you participate in the work of the church together like this, the wall of our Hansarang Church is being rebuilt strongly as the Lord commanded. Fulfill the mission given to each of you. God will remember.
