7:5 내 하나님이 내 마음을 감동하사 귀족들과 민장들과 백성을 모아 그 계보대로 등록하게 하시므로 내가 처음으로 돌아온 자의 계보를 얻었는데 거기에 기록된 것을 보면

5 So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This is what I found written there:


7:6 옛적에 바벨론 왕 느부갓네살에게 사로잡혀 갔던 자들 중에서 놓임을 받고 예루살렘과 유다에 돌아와 각기 자기들의 성읍에 이른 자들 곧

7:7 스룹바벨과 예수아와 느헤미야와 아사랴와 라아먀와 나하마니와 모르드개와 빌산과 미스베렛과 비그왜와 느훔과 바아나와 함께 나온 이스라엘 백성의 명수가 이러하니라

6 These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken captive (they returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town, 7 in company with Zerubbabel, Joshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum and Baanah):

여러분 오늘의 본문 말씀은 하나님에 대해 어떻게 이야기하고 있습니까? 또 사람에 대해, 인간에 대해서는 뭐라고 말씀하고 계십니까? 어제 말씀을 통해 우리는 느헤미야가 드디어 하나님께서 맡겨주신 사명. 성벽 재건의 사명을 완수하는 것을 보았습니다. 기적과도 같이 예루살렘 성 전체의 성벽을 모두 재건하는 데에는 52일 밖에 걸리지 않았습니다. 이러한 하나님의 일하심을 본 대적들은 두려워하고 크게 낙담하였습니다. 성벽 재건의 사명은 느헤미야의 말처럼 큰 역사였습니다. 백성들의 우선순위가 자신들의 삶보다 하나님의 사명이었던 성벽 재건에 있었기때문에 어제 말씀 4절에서는 이런 말씀이 있습니다. “그 성읍은 광대하고 그 주민은 적으며 가옥은 미처 건축하지 못하였음이니라.” 이제 느헤미야는 다른 국면에 처했습니다. 예루살렘 성벽은 이제 모두 재건되었습니다. 그러나 거대한 성만 있고 그 안에 사람이 없으면 제대로 된 성읍이라고 할 수 없겠지요. 그 광대한 성읍 안에 이제는 주민을 채울 때인 것입니다. 바로 그 때, 하나님께서 느헤미야의 마음을 감동케하십니다. 백성들을 모아 그들의 계보대로 등록하게 하신 것입니다. 그러려면 어떻게 해야 할까요? 바로 사람들의 족보가 있어야겠지요. 그래서 그는 돌아온 자들의 계보, 즉, 족보를 얻어 각 사람들에 대해 기록된 것을 말하고 있는 것입니다. 오늘의 말씀은 그 돌아온 자들의 계보를 통해서 나타나는 하나님의 회복과 은혜에 대해서 함께 나누기를 원합니다.


What does today's scripture say about God? And what does it say about people, about humanity? Through yesterday's scripture, we saw Nehemiah finally accomplishing the mission God had entrusted to him - the mission of rebuilding the wall. Miraculously, it took only 52 days to rebuild the entire wall of Jerusalem. Seeing this work of God, the enemies became afraid and greatly discouraged. The mission of rebuilding the wall was, as Nehemiah said, a great work. Because the people's priority was on God's mission rather than their own lives, yesterday's scripture in verse 4 says, "The city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt."

 

Now Nehemiah faced a different situation. The walls of Jerusalem have now been fully rebuilt. However, if there's only a huge city with no people in it, it can't be called a proper city, can it? It was now time to fill that spacious city with inhabitants. At that moment, God moved Nehemiah's heart. He gathered the people to register them according to their genealogy. How should he do this? He would need the people's family records. So he is talking about obtaining the genealogy of those who returned, that is, the family records, and what was recorded about each person. Today's message aims to share about God's restoration and grace as revealed through the genealogy of those who returned.



돌아온 자들의 계보를 통해서 나타나는 하나님, 그 첫번째, 회복하시는 하나님입니다. 6절입니다. “옛적에 바벨론 왕 느부갓네살에게 사로잡혀 갔던 자들 중에서.” 여러분 조국이 멸망해서 다른 나라에 포로로 끌려갔던 백성들의 마음에 무슨 꿈과 희망이 있겠습니까? 심지어 그것이 그들 자신의 죄악으로 인한 하나님의 심판이었다면 아마 아무 소망도 꿈도 없었을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 심판 중에도 회복에 대한 가능성을 열어두셨습니다. 예레미야 25:11-12에 보니 “이 온 땅이 황폐하여 놀램이 될 것이며 이 나라들은 70년동안 바벨론 왕을 섬기리라. 나 여호와가 말하노라 70년이 마치면 내가 바벨론 왕과 그 나라와 갈대아인의 땅을 그 죄악으로 벌하여 영영히 황무케하되” 70년동안 바벨론을 섬길 것이지만 70년이 마치면 그 바벨론을 치시겠다 하십니다. 그리고 그 말씀은 현실이 되어 바벨론은 페르시아에게 멸망하게 되고 그들은 오늘 6절 말씀처럼 “놓임을 받고 예루살렘과 유다에 돌아와 각기 자기들의 성읍에” 이르렀다라고 합니다. 포로 생활을 마치고 돌아온 것만으로도 회복이지요. 그런데 7절을 보니 그 돌아온 자들을 이끌었던 사람들의 이름들이 나옵니다. 유대 총독으로 온 스룹바벨과 대제사장 예수아를 시작으로 느훔과 바아나까지. 이 모두의 이름을 세어보니 총 12명, 즉 이스라엘의12지파의 회복을 상징합니다. 이것은 온전한 회복이지요. 여러분 가만히 생각해보시면 이스라엘은 북이스라엘과 남유다로 나뉘어있었습니다. 12지파 중에 10지파가 북이스라엘이었는데 그들은 앗시리아에게 패망하고 혼혈정책을 통해 사마리아가 되었습니다. 남유다는 어떻습니까? 다윗의 계보를 잇는 유다 지파와 초대 왕이었던 사울의 베냐민 지파만이 남유다에 남아있는 두 지파였습니다. 바벨론에 의해 멸망한 남유다에서 포로생활로 끌려간 인원들은 유다와 베냐민 지파 밖에는 없는 것입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 오늘 말씀은 이상하게도 두명이 아니라 12명을 언급하고 있습니다. 이는 돌아온 인원들이 단순히 남유다만의 회복이 아니라는 것입니다. 이는 북이스라엘과 남유다 즉 통일 이스라엘 백성 전체의 회복을 암시하고 있는 것입니다.


The first aspect of God revealed through the genealogy of those who returned is that He is a God who restores. Verse 6 says, "These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken captive" (NIV). What dreams and hopes could there be in the hearts of people who were taken captive to another country when their homeland was destroyed? Especially if it was God's judgment for their own sins, they probably had no hope or dream at all. However, God left open the possibility of restoration even in the midst of judgment. Jeremiah 25:11-12 says, "'This whole country will become a desolate wasteland, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years. But when the seventy years are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon and his nation, the land of the Babylonians, for their guilt,' declares the Lord, 'and will make it desolate forever.'" (NIV)

 

They would serve Babylon for 70 years, but after 70 years, God said He would punish Babylon. And that word became reality - Babylon was destroyed by Persia, and as today's verse 6 says, they "were freed and returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to their own town" (NIV). Just returning from captivity is restoration. But in verse 7, we see the names of those who led the returnees. Starting with Zerubbabel, who came as the governor of Judah, and Jeshua the high priest, up to Nehum and Baanah. Counting all these names, there are 12 in total, symbolizing the restoration of the 12 tribes of Israel. This is complete restoration.

 

If you think about it, Israel was divided into Northern Israel and Southern Judah. Of the 12 tribes, 10 tribes were in Northern Israel, which was defeated by Assyria and became Samaria through mixed-race policies. What about Southern Judah? Only the tribe of Judah, continuing David's lineage, and the tribe of Benjamin, from which the first king Saul came, remained in Southern Judah. These two tribes were the only ones taken captive to Babylon when Southern Judah was destroyed. Nevertheless, today's scripture strangely mentions 12 people, not two. This means that those who returned are not simply the restoration of Southern Judah. It implies the restoration of all the people of unified Israel, both Northern Israel and Southern Judah.



여러분 8절에서 24절까지는 가문을 단위로 돌아온 사람들의 계보를 이야기 하고 있습니다. 왜 일까요? 그들이 순혈. 즉 진정한 이스라엘 백성이라는 것을 알리고 싶었던 것입니다. 하나님께서 선택하시고 임재하셨던 하나님의 백성. 패망 전의 이스라엘 백성과 지금 돌아온 이들이 다른 백성이 아니라 같은 백성이라는 것을 말하고 싶은 것입니다. 하나님께서 애굽으로부터 구원하신 하나님의 백성으로서의 정체성, 그 정통성을 이들이 잇고있다는 것을 말하고자 하는 것입니다.


여러분 제가 어렸을 때 저희 아버님이 명절에 친가에 내려가면 하시던 말씀이 있습니다. 종우야 너는 뼈대 깊은 전주 이씨 온녕군파 19대 손이야. 응? 세종대왕의 형제셨던 온녕군에서부터 내려온 왕족의 씨다 이 말이야. 이런 말씀을 하시곤 했습니다. 아니 요즘 같은 때에 그게 다 무슨 소용입니까? 저야말로 이곳 미국땅에서 이방인 생활을 하고 있는데요. 하지만 아버님이 말씀하시고 싶었던 것은 정통성이죠. 진위는 알 수 없지만 저희의 뿌리가 왕가에 닿아있다는 그 연속성. 그 말씀을 하시고 싶었던 것 아니겠습니까? 이스라엘 백성도 마찬가지인 것입니다. 하나님의 백성으로서의 정체성 그 정통성을 이들이 잇고 있다는 것. 그래서 바로 그 하나님의 사람들이 지금 회복되고 있다는 것을 말하고 싶은 것입니다.


아까 말씀 드렸듯이 전주 이씨. 그쵸? 전주. 즉 가문 뿐만 아니라 지역도 중요합니다. 오늘 말씀에 보니 25절부터 38절까지 지역을 단위로 사람 수를 셉니다. 마찬가지입니다. 지역 또한 그들이 정통 이스라엘 사람임을 증명하고 이들을 통해 온전한 이스라엘이 회복되었다는 것을 보여주는 것입니다. 또 한가지 중요한 것이 있습니다. 39절부터 내일 말씀인 65절까지는 하나님께 예배 드리는 일에 관련된 사람들이 나옵니다. 제사장, 레위인, 느디님 사람들, 솔로몬의 신하의 자손들. 이들은 모두 제사와 예배에 종사하는 사람들이었습니다. 오늘부터 내일까지의 계보에 나오는 전체 사람들의 이름 중에 거의 절반을 이들의 이름이 차지합니다. 왜 일까요? 바로 예배의 회복을 말하고 있는 것입니다. 그만큼 이들에게 예배가 중요했다는 것입니다. 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을 회복시키시는데 단순히 사람들만을 회복시키신 것이 아니라 예배 또한 함께 회복하셨다는 것입니다. 예배의 회복은 곧 하나님과의 관계의 회복이지요. 하나님은 자신의 백성들을 온전히 회복시키시는 것입니다. 하나님은 회복하시는 하나님이신 것입니다.


From verses 8 to 24, it talks about the genealogy of those who returned by family unit. Why? They wanted to show that they were pure blood, that is, true Israelites. They wanted to say that the people of God whom God had chosen and dwelt among before the fall are the same people as those who have returned now. They wanted to say that these people are continuing the identity and legitimacy as God's people whom God saved from Egypt.

 

When I was young, my father used to say something when we went to his family home during holidays: "Jong-woo, you are the 19th generation descendant of the Onn-yeong-gun branch of the Jeonju Lee clan. You know? You're a seed of royalty, descended from Onn-yeong-gun, who was King Sejong's brother." He used to say things like this. What's the use of that in these times? I'm living as a foreigner here in America. But what my father wanted to say was about legitimacy. Although the truth is uncertain, he wanted to talk about that continuity, that our roots reach back to the royal family. It's the same with the Israelites. They want to say that they are continuing the identity and legitimacy as God's people. They want to say that these very people of God are now being restored.

 

As I mentioned earlier, not only the family but also the region is important. In today's scripture, from verses 25 to 38, it counts people by region. Similarly, this is to prove that they are authentic Israelites and to show that through them, the whole of Israel has been restored. There's one more important thing. From verse 39 to verse 65 of tomorrow's scripture, people related to worshipping God are mentioned. Priests, Levites, temple servants, descendants of Solomon's servants. These were all people involved in sacrifices and worship. Their names occupy almost half of all the names in the genealogy from today to tomorrow. Why? It's talking about the restoration of worship. That's how important worship was to them. When God restored the Israelites, He didn't just restore the people, but also restored worship along with them. The restoration of worship is the restoration of the relationship with God. God is fully restoring His people. God is a God who restores.



 돌아온 자들의 계보를 통해서 나타나는 하나님, 그 두번째, 은혜의 하나님입니다. 오늘 나열된 사람들 중에서 좀 의아한 사람들의 이름이 있습니다. 46절에 느디님 사람들이 그러하고 57절에 솔로몬의 신하의 자손 또한 누구인지 쉽게 이해가 되지 않습니다. 60절에 보니 이 두 그룹의 사람들을 한 카테고리로 묶어서 계수하였던 것을 보면 서로 무슨 연관이 있나 싶기도 한데 잘 모르겠지요. 느디님 사람들은 히브리어로 바쳐진 사람들 이라는 뜻입니다. 에스라 8:20을 보니 이런 말씀이 있습니다. “또 느디님 사람 곧 다윗과 방백들이 주어 레위 사람에게 수종들게 한 그 느디님 사람” 이라는 설명이 나옵니다. 자, 여러분. 제사장은 제단에 제사를 드리도록 구분된 자들이지요. 직접 제사를 집행하는 사람들입니다. 레위인은 제사장을 도와 성막의 모든 직무를 담당하지만 성소의 기구와 단에 절대 가까이 해서는 안되었습니다. 느디님 사람은 그런 레위 사람들을 수종 들었던 사람들인 것입니다. 약간 하청의 하청의 하청같은 느낌이죠. 그들은 아마도 기브온 사람의 후예였을 것입니다. 기브온 사람이란 누구냐? 여호수아가 가나안 땅을 정복할 때 하나님께서 가나안 사람들을 모두 진멸하라 하셨었죠. 바로 그 때 하나님을 두려워하여 마치 멀리서 온 사람들처럼 이스라엘 백성들을 속여서 그들과 동맹을 맺고 목숨을 부지한 사람들이 있습니다. 그들이 기브온 사람들입니다. 이들은 이스라엘 백성들이 아니죠. 엄연한 이방사람입니다. 그래서 여호수아 9:27을 보니 “그 날에 여호수아가 그들로 여호와의 택하신 곳에서 회중을 위하며 여호와의 단을 위하여 나무 패며 물 긷는 자를 삼았더니 오늘까지 이르니라.” 라며 그들을 노역하는 종으로 삼는 장면이 나옵니다.


The second aspect of God revealed through the genealogy of those who returned is that He is a God of grace. Among the people listed today, there are some names that seem strange. The temple servants in verse 46 and the descendants of Solomon's servants in verse 57 are not easily understood. Seeing that these two groups of people are counted as one category in verse 60, it seems they might have some connection, but it's not clear. The temple servants, in Hebrew, means "those who are dedicated." Ezra 8:20 says, "also 220 of the temple servants—a body that David and the officials had established to assist the Levites." (NIV)

 

Now, the priests are those set apart to offer sacrifices on the altar. They are the ones who directly perform the sacrifices. The Levites were responsible for all the duties of the tabernacle to assist the priests, but they were absolutely not allowed to come near the utensils of the sanctuary and the altar. The temple servants were those who served these Levites. It feels a bit like a subcontractor of a subcontractor of a subcontractor. They were probably descendants of the Gibeonites. Who are the Gibeonites? When Joshua was conquering the land of Canaan, God had commanded to completely destroy all the Canaanites. At that time, there were people who, fearing God, deceived the Israelites by pretending to be from a distant land, made an alliance with them, and preserved their lives. These were the Gibeonites. They are not Israelites. They are clearly foreigners. So Joshua 9:27 says, "That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the assembly, to provide for the needs of the altar of the Lord at the place the Lord would choose. And that is what they are to this day." (NIV)



자 그러면 솔로몬의 신하의 자손은 누구입니까? 이들도 원래 이방인이었습니다. 열왕기상 9:20-21 말씀입니다. “무릇 이스라엘 자손이 아닌 아모리 사람과 헷 사람과 브리스 사람과 히위 사람과 여부스 사람의 남아 있는자 곧 이스라엘 자손이 다 멸하지 못하므로 그 땅에 남아 있는 그 자손들을 솔로몬이 노예로 역군을 삼아 오늘까지 이르렀으되” 원래 이방인이였던 이들 또한 솔로몬을 통해 노예가 되어 이스라엘을 섬기게 됩니다. 자 이제 오늘 말씀입니다. 종이었던 그들은 이제 더이상 종이 아닙니다. 그들은 자유인으로서 페르시아에 남아있을 수 있었음에도 불구하고 자발적으로 이스라엘 백성이 되기로 결정한 사람들입니다. 그러나 여러분 저희가 앞에서 무엇을 이야기 했습니까? 족보. 혈통. 가문. 지역. 정통성. 그렇다면 이방인이었던 이들이 과연 이스라엘 백성이 될 수 있을까요? 대답은 예 그렇습니다 입니다. 이것에 하나님의 은혜가 있는 것입니다. 우리가 흔히 생각하는 구약 시대는 오직 이스라엘 사람들 만이 하나님의 백성인 것 같은 착각에 빠지기 쉽습니다. 그러나 성경을 자세히 보시면 하나님께서는 이방인이라 할지라도 하나님을 따르고자 하는 사람들을 버리시지 않습니다. 라합이 그랬고 룻이 그랬습니다. 오늘 말씀의 이들 또한 마찬가지입니다. 하나님께서는 비록 이들이 이방인 출신이었다고 하더라도 이들을 돌아온 이스라엘 백성으로 인정해 주시는 것입니다. 그 증거로 이들의 숫자는 회중의 숫자에 포함됩니다. 노예의 숫자에 들어가지 않습니다. 또한 이들은 분깃을 가집니다. 성전에서 일하는 자들로 인정받아 세금도 면제받습니다. 하나님의 백성으로 인정해 주시는 것입니다. 하나님의 은혜인 것입니다.


말씀을 맺습니다. 하나님께서는 회복과 은혜의 하나님이십니다. 당신의 백성들을 부르셔서 회복하게 하시고 그들의 예배 또한 회복시키십니다. 그리고 하나님의 백성이 될 수 없었던 사람들을 하나님의 은혜로 그 계보에 집어 넣어주십니다. 하나님의 백성이라 불러주십니다. 오늘 이 돌아온 자들의 계보를 통하여 크신 하나님의 회복과 은혜를 성도 여러분 모두 경험하게 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

 

Then who are the descendants of Solomon's servants? They too were originally foreigners. 1 Kings 9:20-21 says, "There were still people left from the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites (these peoples were not Israelites). Solomon conscripted the descendants of all these peoples remaining in the land—whom the Israelites could not exterminate—to serve as slave labor, as it is to this day." (NIV)

 

These foreigners also became slaves to serve Israel through Solomon. Now, in today's scripture, those who were slaves are no longer slaves. They are people who, although they could have remained in Persia as free people, voluntarily decided to become Israelites. But what did we talk about earlier? Genealogy. Bloodline. Family. Region. Legitimacy. Then can these former foreigners become Israelites? The answer is yes. This is where God's grace lies. We often fall into the misconception that in the Old Testament era, only Israelites could be God's people. However, if you look carefully at the Bible, God does not abandon people who want to follow Him, even if they are foreigners. Rahab was like that, and Ruth was like that. The same is true for these people in today's scripture. Although they were of foreign origin, God recognizes them as returned Israelites. As evidence, their numbers are included in the number of the assembly. They are not counted among the slaves. Also, they have a share. They are recognized as workers in the temple and are exempt from taxes. They are recognized as God's people. This is God's grace.

 

I conclude the message. God is a God of restoration and grace. He calls His people to be restored and also restores their worship. And He puts people who couldn't have been God's people into His genealogy by His grace. He calls them God's people. Through this genealogy of those who returned, I pray in the name of the Lord that all of you, the believers, will experience God's great restoration and grace.
