70 Some of the heads of the families contributed to the work. The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 darics of gold, 50 bowls and 530 garments for priests. 71 Some of the heads of the families gave to the treasury for the work 20,000 darics of gold and 2,200 minas of silver. 72 The total given by the rest of the people was 20,000 darics of gold, 2,000 minas of silver and 67 garments for priests.

7:73 이와 같이 제사장들과 레위 사람들과 문지기들과 노래하는 자들과 백성 몇 명과 느디님 사람들과 온 이스라엘 자손이 다 자기들의 성읍에 거주하였느니라

73 The priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the musicians and the temple servants, along with certain of the people and the rest of the Israelites, settled in their own towns.

지난 2022년 4월 대한예수교 장로회 합동총회에서 주최한 은혜로운 동행 기도운동 전국기도회가 용인에 위치한 새에덴교회(담임 소강석)에서 개최되었습니다. 제가 한국에서 사역할 때 바로 그 지역을 담당하는 교구목사여서 심방을 오고 가며 새에덴교회를 자주 보았습니다. 크고 화려한 건물이었습니다.

교계에 내노라 하는 목사님들이 각 순서를 맡아서 말씀을 전했습니다.

거의 모든 목사님들이 덕담을 하는 와중에 이찬수 목사님은 본인이 속한 예장합동총회에 아주 쓴소리를 했습니다. 말씀의 요지는 다음과 같습니다. 

교회를 평가하는 것이 그저 사람 많이 모이는 것이라면 하나님이 왜 우리 같은 사람을 부르셨겠습니까?

연예인을 부르시지… 우리를 평가하시는 분은 하나님인 줄로 믿습니다.

하나님이 우리를 평가할 것을 믿는다면 우리 지금 이렇게 하면 안 되는 것 아닌가요?

하나님께서는 마음, 뜻, 성품, 중심을 다해 사랑하라고 하셨는데,  

그렇다면 우리의 예배가 이렇게 화려할 필요가 있을까요?

목사가 정치, 경제 간섭하는 것 좋은데, 젊은 아이들이 우리를 볼 때 저건 아닌데… 하고 교회를 떠나면 어떻게 하겠습니까? 교회가 얼마나 은혜로우면 이런 아름다운 예배당을 만드실 수 있습니까? 그런데 50년 뒤에 안 채워진다면 어떻게 하시겠습니까? 유럽 교회는 술집으로 바뀐다고 하는데, 안 두려우셔요?

참으로 공감이 가는 말씀이었습니다. 특히나 다른 목사님들이 예배당이 크다고 칭찬하고, 아직 어떤 어떤 교회 예배당 크기에 비하면 멀었다는 식으로 말했던 것과는 너무도 비교되는 말씀이었습니다.

성전을 짓는 것이 중요한 것이 아니라, 그곳을 무엇으로 채우느냐가 더 중요한 문제입니다.

In April 2022, the nationwide prayer meeting hosted by the Graceful Journey Prayer Movement of the Presbyterian Church of Korea was held at New Eden Church (led by Senior Pastor So Kang-seok) in Yong-in. When I ministered in Korea, I frequently passed by this church as I was in charge of the district that included it. It was a large and splendid building. Prominent pastors from various denominations delivered the messages during the event. While most of the pastors gave words of encouragement, Pastor Lee Chan-soo offered sharp criticism of his own denomination. His message can be summarized as follows:

It was a truly resonant message. It stood in stark contrast to other pastors who praised the large size of the sanctuary and spoke as if it was still small compared to others. Building a temple is important, but what is more important is what we fill it with.

1차 포로 귀환 명단 (61~65절)

느헤미야서는 구조적으로 성벽이 재건된 과정(1~7장)과 부흥운동(8~13장)으로 크게 나눌 수 있습니다.

성벽 재건이 52일만에 성공적으로 이루어졌기 때문에, 오늘 본문에서는 성벽 완공을 축하하는 낙성식이 거행되는 것이 맞는데, 낙성식은 12장으로 미뤄지고 느헤미야 공동체는 또 다른 문제를 맞이합니다.

그것은 새로 지어진 예루살렘 성안에 거주하는 이스라엘 백성의 숫자가 극히 적다는 문제였습니다.

성을 방어할 인원을 세우려 해도 그럴 수 없는 상황이었던 것입니다. 상황이 이렇게 된 이유는 본래 예루살렘 성전과 성을 재건하라는 고레스 칙령에 의해 포로들이 귀환했지만, 주변 대적들의 방해와 공격으로 신변의 위협을 느낀 백성들이 예루살렘을 버리고 각자의 삶의 터전을 찾아 떠났기 때문입니다.

하나님이 그들을 바벨론에서 다시 예루살렘으로 귀환하게 하신 것은 거룩한 성을 회복하고, 하나님의 영광을 위해 살라는 거룩한 사명 때문인데, 그들은 그 사명을 버리고 각자 살 길을 찾아 떠난 것입니다.

참으로 안타까운 상황이 아닐 수 없습니다. 그리고 이것은 영적으로 오늘날 성도들이 교회를 버리고 하나 둘 각자 살 길을 찾아 떠나는 영적인 상황과 매우 흡사하다는 생각이 듭니다.

어떻게 해야 할까요? 느혜미야는 성령의 감동을 받습니다(5). 다윗은 사탄의 감동(?)으로 인구조사를 해서 낭패를 보았는데, 반대로 느헤미야는 성령의 감동으로 인구조사를 합니다.

그리고 오늘 본문에는 자신이 조사한 인구 명단이 아닌, 약 100년 전에 예루살렘으로 귀환한 1차 포로 귀환자들의 명단을 기록합니다. 그래서 오늘 본문 61~68절은 에스라서 2:59~67절과 거의 동일합니다.

그는 왜 이렇게 하는 것일까요? 그것은 바로 그들 조상에게 주어졌던 사명을 생각나게 하려는 의도입니다. 자신들의 조상들에게 할당되었던 땅이 어디인지는 기억하게 함으로 다시 예루살렘으로 백성들을 불러 모으려는 의도였던 것입니다.

1차 귀환자들의 명단에는 계보가 확인되지 않는 사람들이 있었습니다(61~65). 또한 귀환자의 총수와 가축의 숫자도 있었습니다. 그리고 성전을 위하여 백성들이 하나님 앞에 드린 예물도 기록되었습니다.   

The List of First Returnees (Nehemiah 7:61–65)

The book of Nehemiah can be divided into two main sections: the rebuilding of the wall (chapters 1–7) and the revival movement (chapters 8–13). Since the wall was successfully rebuilt in just 52 days, one would expect a dedication ceremony to celebrate its completion in today’s passage. However, the dedication ceremony is postponed to chapter 12, and the Nehemiah community faces another issue—the small number of Israelites residing within the newly rebuilt walls of Jerusalem. Even if they wanted to defend the city, there weren’t enough people.

This situation arose because, although the exiles had returned to rebuild the temple and walls of Jerusalem under the decree of King Cyrus, threats and attacks from surrounding enemies had caused the people to abandon Jerusalem and seek new homes for themselves. God had brought them back from Babylon to restore the holy city and live for His glory, but they abandoned that mission and went their own ways. This is a truly heartbreaking situation, and it closely resembles the current spiritual state where believers are leaving the church one by one to seek their own paths. What should we do?

Nehemiah is moved by the Holy Spirit (verse 5). Unlike King David, who was influenced by Satan to conduct a census and suffered consequences, Nehemiah conducts a census under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Today’s passage records the list of first returnees from about 100 years earlier, rather than the results of Nehemiah’s census. The list in Nehemiah 7:61–68 is nearly identical to Ezra 2:59–67. Why did Nehemiah do this? His intention was to remind the people of the mission given to their ancestors. By recalling the land allotted to their forefathers, Nehemiah aimed to bring the people back to Jerusalem.

The list of first returnees includes those whose genealogies were uncertain (verses 61–65). It also lists the total number of returnees and their livestock. Additionally, the offerings given by the people to God for the temple are recorded.

하나님의 도성과 성전을 채우는 이스라엘 (66~73절)

예전에 우리나라는 둘만 낳아 잘 키우자 라는 슬로건을 가지고 전국민 계몽운동을 벌였습니다.

하지만 오늘날에는 인구절벽을 실감하며 대한민국이라는 국가의 존폐를 걱정해야 할 상황이 되었습니다.

사람 숫자가 곧 국력입니다. 생육하고 번성하라고 명령하는 하나님의 말씀은 진리입니다.

하나님의 성전은 예배, 곧 하나님과의 만남을 위한 곳입니다. 그러므로 가장 먼저 필요한 것은 사람, 곧 예배자입니다. 성전은 만남의 주체이신 하나님, 곧 성령님과 만남의 또 다른 주체인 예배자가 있어야 합니다. 그리고 하나님과의 만남은 중보자 되시는 예수 그리스도, 곧 말씀으로 이루어집니다.

그리스도가 임재하시기 전에는 제사장이 상징적으로 그 역할을 대신한 것입니다.

그러므로 계보가 불분명한 제사장은 절대로 직분을 행하지도 못했을 뿐 아니라, 지성물도 먹지 못했습니다. 이것은 차별이 아닌 하나님의 율법을 온전하게 지키는 것입니다.

예배의 순수성과 거룩성을 지키려는 노력입니다. 교회는 거룩한 하나님의 백성들로 가득 채워져야 합니다. 그런 은혜가 전세계 모든 교회에 있기를 간절하게 기도합니다.

또한 곳간은 제2 성전인 스룹바벨 성전을 재건하기 위하여 수많은 은금과 제사장 의복이 하나님 앞에 드려졌습니다. 이 일에는 족장들이나 백성들 구분 없이 모두가 한마음으로 참여했습니다.

하나님께서는 바벨론 포로 생활 가운데에도 그들에게 복을 주셨고, 그들은 그 받은 복으로 하나님의 성전을 재건하기 위해 마음을 다해 자신이 가진 물질을 드린 것입니다.     

Filling God’s City and Temple with the Israelites (Nehemiah 7:66–73)

In the past, Korea launched a nationwide campaign with the slogan, "Have two children and raise them well." But today, we are facing a demographic crisis, with concerns about the survival of the nation. The number of people is equivalent to national strength. God's command to "be fruitful and multiply" is a truth. The temple of God is a place of worship, a place to meet with God. Therefore, the most important thing is people—worshippers. The temple must be filled with worshippers who meet with God, the Holy Spirit. And this meeting with God is mediated by Jesus Christ, the Word. Before Christ’s presence, the priest symbolically fulfilled this role. Priests whose genealogies were unclear were not allowed to perform their duties or eat sacred food. This was not discrimination, but an effort to fully adhere to God's law and maintain the purity and holiness of worship.

The church should be filled with God’s holy people. I earnestly pray for this grace to be upon all the churches around the world. In addition, many silver and gold offerings and priestly garments were given to God for the rebuilding of the second temple, Zerubbabel’s temple. Everyone, from the leaders to the people, participated wholeheartedly in this effort. Even during their exile in Babylon, God blessed them, and they gave their possessions wholeheartedly to rebuild the temple of God.

그렇습니다. 교회는 건물이 아닙니다. 아무리 건물을 지어도 그 건물이 텅텅 비어 있다면, 그것은 교회가 아닙니다. 교회는 마음의 중심에 예수 그리스도를 왕으로 모신 사람들이 모인 공동체입니다.

예수 그리스도가 나의 구주이시며, 왕이라는 신앙고백을 가진 자들이 함께 모여 예배하기 위한 장소가 건물로서 교회인 것입니다. 교회 건물은 바로 하나님의 영을 모신 사람들과 그들이 드리는 물질과 시간과 재능의 모든 헌신으로 채워져야 합니다. 그럴 때 그곳이 온전한 교회가 되는 것입니다.

우리 교회가 하나님의 영으로 충만한 사람들과 그들이 드리는 마음과 뜻과 성품과 중심과 헌신과 물질로 충만한 교회가 되기를 진심으로 간구합니다.

Indeed, the church is not a building. No matter how many buildings are constructed, if they remain empty, they are not churches. The church is a community of people who have accepted Jesus Christ as King in their hearts. The church building is merely a place where those who confess Jesus Christ as their Savior and King gather to worship. The church building must be filled with the people who hold the Holy Spirit in their hearts, along with their offerings of material, time, and talents. Only then does it become a true church. I sincerely pray that our church will be filled with people who are full of the Spirit of God and with their devotion, hearts, minds, strength, and material offerings.
