20241008 [새벽묵상] 우리를 신실하게 사랑하시는 하나님을 힘써 알자 | Let us strive to know this God who loves us faithfully (호/Hos 6:1-11)

1 “Come, let us return to the Lord.

He has torn us to pieces

    but he will heal us;

he has injured us

    but he will bind up our wounds.

2 After two days he will revive us;

    on the third day he will restore us,

    that we may live in his presence.

3 Let us acknowledge the Lord;

    let us press on to acknowledge him.

As surely as the sun rises,

    he will appear;

he will come to us like the winter rains,

    like the spring rains that water the earth.”

4 “What can I do with you, Ephraim?

    What can I do with you, Judah?

Your love is like the morning mist,

    like the early dew that disappears.

5 Therefore I cut you in pieces with my prophets,

    I killed you with the words of my mouth—

    then my judgments go forth like the sun.

6 For I desire mercy, not sacrifice,

    and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.

7 As at Adam,[b] they have broken the covenant;

    they were unfaithful to me there.

8 Gilead is a city of evildoers,

    stained with footprints of blood.

9 As marauders lie in ambush for a victim,

    so do bands of priests;

they murder on the road to Shechem,

    carrying out their wicked schemes.

10 I have seen a horrible thing in Israel:

    There Ephraim is given to prostitution,

    Israel is defiled.

11 “Also for you, Judah,

    a harvest is appointed.

“Whenever I would restore the fortunes of my people,

Brothers and sisters, as we meditate on the book of Hosea, we sometimes get the feeling that God seems to be constantly changing His mind. For example, in chapter 1, doesn't He give names like Lo-Ruhamah and Lo-Ammi to Hosea's children born through the prostitute Gomer? These names meant, "I will no longer show love to Israel," and "You are not my people and I am not your God." But then suddenly in chapter 2, verse 1, He says, "Say of your brothers, 'My people,' and of your sisters, 'My loved one.'" He completely reverses His stance, saying He will forgive again and that they are His people. It's strange, isn't it?

The same pattern continues in chapter 2. God says He will punish the Israelites, but by the end of the chapter, He says He will speak tenderly to them and comfort them. Today's passage is no different. In chapters 4 and 5, God mentions the sins of the Israelites and says He will pour out His wrath like water. But in today's text, chapter 6, He says He will heal us and bind up our wounds. It's perplexing, isn't it? What exactly is God doing here? Back and forth, back and forth. Is God indecisive? Is He someone who says one thing and then says, "Oh sorry, I made a mistake. That's not what I meant," and changes His words? No, absolutely not. So why is God doing this? It's because He loves them so much. He loves them so much that He appears unable to decide one way or the other.

Just as Hosea goes to bring back the prostitute Gomer when she sleeps with other men, God faithfully loved the Israelites even when they were unfaithful with idol worship. He tries to turn their hearts by speaking gently, then by issuing warnings, and when they still don't return, He aches with love, wondering why they won't come back to Him, asking what more He needs to do. This, my friends, is the heart of God. God loves us so much that even when we don't love Him, His heart burns for us (Hosea 11:8). God loves us this faithfully.

Let's look at verse 4 of today's passage: "What can I do with you, Ephraim? What can I do with you, Judah? Your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears."

Can you hear God's anguish? In today's passage, God says our love for Him, our promises, our hesed (steadfast love) is like dew that quickly vanishes. But what about God's love? Let's look at verse 3: "As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth."

God's love for us is unfailing. Just as the rising and setting of the sun is so consistent that we barely notice it, God's love is constant like an unchanging truth. It's reliable. It's faithful. And what about the spring rains that water the earth? The early rains soften the dry summer ground for planting, while the late rains help the crops grow abundantly during the winter rainy season. The late rain is God's blessing that enables a great harvest. It's God's provision. God's love is faithful, unchanging towards us, and His love is full of blessings like the late rain that waters the earth. This is God's faithful love, His Hesed.

What does this God desire from us? Verse 6 says, "For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings." Why does God say this? It's not that these people weren't serving God. They were offering sacrifices and burnt offerings, probably according to the procedures laid out in the law. But what does God say He wants? He says, "I want your heart." He wants our innermost being. He wants the faithful love we promised Him.

Can we hide anything from God? Can we deceive God as we might deceive people? Can we cover up our sins before God as described in verses 7 to 9 of today's passage? No. God sees everything. That's why verse 10 says, "I have seen a horrible thing in Israel." He sees everything and knows everything. That's why the Bible describes God as the one who searches our hearts. This God is asking for our hearts. He's saying He wants our unchanging love. Can you feel the weight of these words?

What else does God want? He says He wants us to know Him. This doesn't mean intellectual knowledge about God. It means knowing God experientially. When we're introduced to someone, we might know facts "about" them - what they do, where they're from, what they like. But when we marry someone and live with them, we come to know them through direct experience. Similarly, in the Old Testament, when it says a man and woman "knew" each other, it means they had intimate relations. This is how we should know God. God wants us to know Him as intimately as a married couple knows each other in their most private moments. That's why God says in Hosea 2:20, "I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will acknowledge the Lord."

God already loves us with His faithful love, and He knew us before we were formed in the womb. Now it's our turn to love and know God. That's why the prophet Hosea is calling out to us today, "Come, let us return to the Lord," and "Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him." Even if we have sinned, even if we have left God, even if we didn't know God, if we return to Him, He will heal us and bind up our wounds. Why? Because God loves us unchangingly. Because He is the One who keeps His promise to love us until the end.

This is the God we need to know. We need to strive to know Him. Come to God. Return to God. Pray that He will let you experience Him, that He will let you know Him. Seek God with all your heart and all your mind. Don't settle for what others say about God's nature, or mere knowledge "about" God. Pray that you will meet God directly, that you will experience Him personally. Pray that you will know God. We must strive to know this God who loves us faithfully.
