20241010 [새벽묵상] 형식만 갖춘 신앙은 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 수 없습니다 | Faith that only maintains appearances cannot please God (호/Hos 8:1~14)

1 “Put the trumpet to your lips!

    An eagle is over the house of the Lord

because the people have broken my covenant

    and rebelled against my law.

2 Israel cries out to me,

    ‘Our God, we acknowledge you!’

3 But Israel has rejected what is good;

    an enemy will pursue him.

4 They set up kings without my consent;

    they choose princes without my approval.

With their silver and gold

    they make idols for themselves

    to their own destruction.

5 Samaria, throw out your calf-idol!

    My anger burns against them.

How long will they be incapable of purity?

6     They are from Israel!

This calf—a metalworker has made it;

    it is not God.

It will be broken in pieces,

    that calf of Samaria.

7 “They sow the wind

    and reap the whirlwind.

The stalk has no head;

    it will produce no flour.

Were it to yield grain,

    foreigners would swallow it up.

8 Israel is swallowed up;

    now she is among the nations

    like something no one wants.

9 For they have gone up to Assyria

    like a wild donkey wandering alone.

    Ephraim has sold herself to lovers.

10 Although they have sold themselves among the nations,

    I will now gather them together.

They will begin to waste away

    under the oppression of the mighty king.

11 “Though Ephraim built many altars for sin offerings,

    these have become altars for sinning.

12 I wrote for them the many things of my law,

    but they regarded them as something foreign.

13 Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to me,

    and though they eat the meat,

    the Lord is not pleased with them.

Now he will remember their wickedness

    and punish their sins:

    They will return to Egypt.

14 Israel has forgotten their Maker

    and built palaces;

    Judah has fortified many towns.

But I will send fire on their cities

    that will consume their fortresses.”

We've been discussing how faithfully God loves us through the book of Hosea this week. That's why I said yesterday that not returning to God is our greatest sin. However, today's passage shows that God is not pleased when we claim to return to Him but only maintain the formalities of worship while not living according to His word. Faith that is only formal cannot please God.

In verse 1 today, God declares war: "Put the trumpet to your lips! An eagle is over the house of the LORD because the people have broken my covenant and rebelled against my law." Why is He making this declaration? Because they have broken His covenant and violated His law. But in verse 2, these people are saying something different: "Israel cries out to me, 'Our God, we acknowledge you!'" God clearly said they rebelled against His law, yet they cry out that they know God. This doesn't add up, does it? Whose words are correct then? Of course, God's words are right. From God's perspective, how brazen must these people be? When people who have disobeyed God's word come before Him, what should they do first? They should seek God's forgiveness for their wrongdoings. But these people, without any shame, commit countless sins behind His back while claiming to know God before Him. They're not just saying it; they're crying out. Wouldn't God be exasperated?

So He lists their sins point by point. First, Israel rejected God. Verse 3 says, "Israel has rejected what is good." In the original text, this means "But Israel has rejected the Good One, that is, God." Therefore, enemies will pursue them. They claim to know God but have rejected Him behind His back. Second, it's not from me, and I don't know about it. Verse 4 says, "They set up kings without my consent; they choose princes without my approval." Is there anything God doesn't know? Why does He say He doesn't know? It's not that God doesn't know; it means they didn't consult God. Who establishes kings? God does. Who is the true king? Only God. Then what are human kings? They are God's anointed ones. They are chosen by God. That's how it was with the first king Saul, with David, and with Solomon. Didn't the Israelites originally come to Samuel asking for a king, and God permitted it? But now, God is nowhere to be found. How bad must it be for God to say, "Huh? I don't know about this"? Third, "With their silver and gold they make idols for themselves to their own destruction." The latter part means "so that they may be destroyed." The tone is a bit different, isn't it? Earlier, He said the enemy would pursue them and that He didn't know about it, but here He says it's for their ultimate destruction. It seems He has more to say about idol worship, right?

So He says in verse 5, "Throw out your calf-idol, O Samaria!" In the original text, it says, "I, I Yahweh, have rejected Samaria's calf." Remember what I said about verse 3 earlier? "Israel rejected God." But what does God say in verse 5? "God rejected Samaria's calf, their idol worship." Do you see how strong this tone is? He's throwing back at them exactly what they did. And for the first time, He says this: "My anger burns against them." For the first time, He expresses direct anger and hostility towards them. What is the content of this anger? "How long will they be incapable of purity?" How long will you continue idol worship? When will you return to me? God is so angry that He starts openly denouncing their idols.

Verse 6 says, "It is from Israel!" Don't you know where this came from? "A craftsman has made it." It's man-made. "It is not God." How dare you compare this thing to the true God? "It will be broken to pieces, that calf of Samaria." He's saying it's just an object with no power or ability. So in verse 7, we see the terrible consequences of idol worship. What idol does Samaria's calf represent? It's Baal. Baal is the god of storms. He's supposed to bring rain, symbolizing abundance and good harvests. But what does God say? "They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind." You worship the god of storms for rain, but you'll get no rain; instead, you'll sow wind and reap a whirlwind. What is this? God is mocking their Baal worship. And what's the result? "The stalk has no head; it will produce no flour. Were it to yield grain, foreigners would swallow it up." You'll be ruined, completely ruined. He's totally rejecting idol worship. You seek abundance by leaving me? Don't even dream about it.

Verses 8-10 are similar. The Israelites who don't rely on God but on worldly power and strength end up not getting what they want and become unwanted by all. They end up being squeezed dry by the Assyrian king, suffering greatly. Only then do they turn to God. Verse 11 says, "Though Ephraim built many altars for sin offerings, these have become altars for sinning." Verse 13 says, "Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to me, and though they eat the meat, the LORD is not pleased with them." Even if they build many altars to atone for their sins and offer sacrifices to God, He says He will not be pleased. Why? They may have the form of worship, but they didn't even try to know what God was saying, what God wanted. Faith that only maintains the form of worship cannot please God.

Verse 12 says, "I wrote for them the many things of my law, but they regarded them as something foreign." This "something foreign" means unfamiliar or strange. In Deuteronomy, when God warned the Israelites about idol worship, He said in Deuteronomy 32:16, "They made him jealous with their foreign gods and angered him with their detestable idols." When they were God's people, the idols of the Canaanites were "other gods, strange gods, foreign gods." But in verse 12 today, we see that they have become so accustomed to worldly culture and idol worship that God's covenant and law have become strange, unfamiliar, and different to them. Doesn't it say they "regarded them as something foreign"?

Let me emphasize again, it's not that they didn't serve God at all. They offered sacrifices to God and confidently cried out that they knew the Lord when they approached Him. However, they only stood before God when offering sacrifices or worshiping, but in their daily lives, they rejected God. They didn't consult God. Instead of God, they worshiped success and prosperity as idols and relied on the world rather than God. They were serving God, the world, and the idols they made, all at the same time. God says He is not pleased with their faith that only maintains appearances. Rather, their altars, their worship, have become sin to them. They cry out that they know God, but in verse 14, God says they have forgotten their Maker.

Did God love us only in form? Did He pretend to love us out of some necessity? No. Just from this week's message alone, couldn't you see how much God loves us with all His heart? He says His heart is stirred within Him and His compassion grows warm and tender for us. Isn't it because He loved us so much that He confirmed that love by being crucified for us? How then can we offer God a faith that only maintains appearances? How can we offer sacrifices that do not please God? My friends, where is your heart, your core, your life directed right now? Faith that only maintains appearances cannot please God. Let us pray.
