14:1 이스라엘아 네 하나님 여호와께로 돌아오라 네가 불의함으로 말미암아 엎드러졌느니라

14:2 너는 말씀을 가지고 여호와께로 돌아와서 아뢰기를 모든 불의를 제거하시고 선한 바를 받으소서 우리가 수송아지를 대신하여 입술의 열매를 주께 드리리이다

14:3 우리가 앗수르의 구원을 의지하지 아니하며 말을 타지 아니하며 다시는 우리의 손으로 만든 것을 향하여 너희는 우리의 신이라 하지 아니하오리니 이는 고아가 주로 말미암아 긍휼을 얻음이니이다 할지니라

1 Return, Israel, to the Lord your God.

    Your sins have been your downfall!

2 Take words with you

    and return to the Lord.

Say to him:

    “Forgive all our sins

and receive us graciously,

    that we may offer the fruit of our lips.

3 Assyria cannot save us;

    we will not mount warhorses.

We will never again say ‘Our gods’

    to what our own hands have made,

    for in you the fatherless find compassion.”

14:4 내가 그들의 반역을 고치고 기쁘게 그들을 사랑하리니 나의 진노가 그에게서 떠났음이니라

14:5 내가 이스라엘에게 이슬과 같으리니 그가 백합화 같이 피겠고 레바논 백향목 같이 뿌리가 박힐 것이라

14:6 그의 가지는 퍼지며 그의 아름다움은 감람나무와 같고 그의 향기는 레바논 백향목 같으리니

14:7 그 그늘 아래에 거주하는 자가 돌아올지라 그들은 곡식 같이 풍성할 것이며 포도나무 같이 꽃이 필 것이며 그 향기는 레바논의 포도주 같이 되리라

14:8 에브라임의 말이 내가 다시 우상과 무슨 상관이 있으리요 할지라 내가 그를 돌아보아 대답하기를 나는 푸른 잣나무 같으니 네가 나로 말미암아 열매를 얻으리라 하리라

4 “I will heal their waywardness

    and love them freely,

    for my anger has turned away from them.

5 I will be like the dew to Israel;

    he will blossom like a lily.

Like a cedar of Lebanon

    he will send down his roots;

6     his young shoots will grow.

His splendor will be like an olive tree,

    his fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon.

7 People will dwell again in his shade;

    they will flourish like the grain,

they will blossom like the vine—

    Israel’s fame will be like the wine of Lebanon.

8 Ephraim, what more have I[c] to do with idols?

    I will answer him and care for him.

I am like a flourishing juniper;

    your fruitfulness comes from me.”

14:9 누가 지혜가 있어 이런 일을 깨달으며 누가 총명이 있어 이런 일을 알겠느냐 여호와의 도 는 정직하니 의인은 그 길로 다니거니와 그러나 죄인은 그 길에 걸려 넘어지리라

9 Who is wise? Let them realize these things.

    Who is discerning? Let them understand.

The ways of the Lord are right;

    the righteous walk in them,

    but the rebellious stumble in them.

한번은 제가 아이들 책상 때문에 시애틀 시내에 있는 어떤 사람과 거래를 한 적이 있었습니다. 거래 전날에 갑자기 문자가 왔어요. 자기가 책상을 팔려고 옮기다가 다리가 부러졌답니다. 그런데 우드글루로 잘 붙여놓았으니 괜찮을 거라는 거에요. 워낙 사진 상에 마음에 들었던 책상이라 일단 취소하지 않고 다음 날 그 사람 아파트를 찾아갔습니다. 저는 좀 마음이 불안해서 저희가 직접 올라가서 물건을 보겠다고 했는데 굳이 가지고 내려오겠다고 하더라구요. 물건을 봤는데 상태가 말이 아니었습니다. 저는 구매를 원치 않았지만 제 아내가 그래도 여기까지 왔는데 우리는 지금 당장 책상이 필요하니까 그냥 사자고 하더라구요. 집에 가져와서 물건을 보는데 그 망가진 부분이 계속 눈에 걸리는 거에요. 결국에는 얼마지나지 않아 그 책상을 버려버리고 새 책상을 구매 하였습니다. 저에게 꽤나 손해였던 일이지요. 그러나 제가 그 책상을 사기로 결정하였기 때문에 저는 그 손해를 감당해야했던 것이지요.

Once, I made a deal with someone in downtown Seattle for a children's desk. The day before the transaction, I suddenly received a text message. They said that while moving the desk to sell it, a leg had broken. However, they assured me it would be fine as they had glued it well with wood glue. Since I really liked the desk from the photos, I didn't cancel and went to their apartment the next day. I was a bit uneasy, so I said we would go up to see the item ourselves, but they insisted on bringing it down. When we saw the item, its condition was terrible. I didn't want to buy it, but my wife said that since we had come all this way and needed a desk right away, we should just buy it. When we brought it home and looked at it, the damaged part kept catching my eye. In the end, not long after, we threw away that desk and bought a new one. It was quite a loss for me. However, because I had decided to buy that desk, I had to bear that loss.

여러분 이렇듯이 사람 사이에서도 물건이 망가지거나 하는 일로 손해가 발생하게 되면 보통은 그 피해를 끼친 사람이 책임을 집니다. 만약 그 피해를 받은 사람이 괜찮아 그냥 가 아니면 내가 살게 라고 한다고 하면 괜찮은 것 같지만 사실 그 손해 자체는 어딜 가지 않지요. 그 사람이 손해를 안고 가는 것입니다. 누군가는 값을 치루어야만 하지요. 마찬가지입니다. 우리가 하나님께 범죄하면 그 죄의 결과를 우리는 책임져야 합니다. 우리가 범죄한 것이니까요. 그런데 오늘 4절 말씀에 보니 하나님께서 우리가 회개하면 “그들의 반역을 고치고 기쁘게 그들을 사랑하리니 나의 진노가 그에게서 떠났음이니라”라고 하십니다. 우리가 회개할 때에 우리를 고치시는 것. 이해할 수 있습니다. 그러나 우리를 기쁘게 사랑하시겠다? 나의 진노가 그에게서 떠났다? 는 말씀은 이해가 되질 않는거에요. 어떻게 그럴 수가 있지? 우리가 범한 죄악들의 죗값은 죽음인데 우리는 그 죗값을 치룬적이 없는데 어떻게 우리를 아무런 속쓰림 없이 이렇게 기쁘게 사랑하시겠다고 말씀하실 수 있는 것입니까? 앞에서 그렇게 이들이 하나님을 거절하고 우상숭배하며 다른 구원자를 찾는 것에 대해서 하나님께서 그렇게 진노하셨는데 이들이 회개만 하면 갑자기 아무것도 없는 것처럼 되고 “나의 진노가 그에게서 떠났음이니라”라니 이게 대체 말이 안되지 않습니까?

You see, even in human relationships, when damage occurs due to something breaking, usually the person who caused the damage takes responsibility. If the person who suffered the damage says, "It's okay, just go," or "I'll buy it," it might seem fine, but in reality, the loss doesn't go away. That person is bearing the loss. Someone has to pay the price. It's the same with God. When we sin against God, we must be responsible for the consequences of that sin. It's because we sinned. But look at verse 4 today, where God says, "I will heal their waywardness and love them freely, for my anger has turned away from them" (Hosea 14:4, NIV). When we repent, God healing us - that's understandable. But loving us freely? His anger turning away from us? This doesn't make sense. How can this be? The wages of our sins is death, but we haven't paid that price, so how can God say He will love us so freely without any bitterness? Earlier, God was so angry about how these people rejected Him, worshipped idols, and sought other saviors, but now if they just repent, suddenly it's as if nothing happened, and He says, "My anger has turned away from them." Doesn't this seem completely illogical?

제가 오늘 원래 준비하던 말씀은 이런 말씀이 아니었어요. 하나님께 돌아가는 자에게 주어지는 회복의 약속에 대한 말씀이었습니다. 아니 근데 말씀을 계속 보다보니까 너무 기가 차잖아요. 우리가 호세아서를 계속 보면서 우리는 하나님이 얼마나 이스라엘 백성을 간절히 부르셨는지를 보지 않으셨습니까? 오죽하면 호세아 선지자보고 야 니가 가서 나처럼 창녀를 데리고 와서 살아라. 걔가 도망칠 때마다 데리고 와라. 이것이 니들이 나한테 하는 짓이다 라고 하셨잖아요. 그런데도 이들은 11:7에 “내 백성이 끝끝내 내게서 물러가나니 비록 그들을 불러 위에 계신 이에게로 돌아오라 할지라도 일어나는 자가 하나도 없도다”라고 말씀하지 않으십니까? 오늘 14장. 호세아서 마지막 장입니다. 이것은 호세아가 이들 이스라엘 백성에게 전하는 마지막 회개 기도문이에요. 여러분 제발 하나님께로 돌아오십시오 여러분이 넘어진 것이 여러분의 죄 때문입니다. 이게 1절이잖아요. 자 제가 하나님께 어떻게 기도해야할지 회개문을 드릴테니까 이대로만 기도하세요. 2절에 “너는 말씀을 가지고 여호와께로 돌아와서 아뢰기를” 라고 할 때 그 말씀이 바로 이 기도문입니다. 1절에서 3절까지 정말 낱낱이 그들의 죄를 고백하게 시켜요. 3절에 우리가 더 이상 외세를 의지하지 않겠습니다. 말, 즉, 군사력을 의지하지 않겠습니다. 앞으로는 절대로, 다시는, 우상숭배하지 않겠습니다. 고아같은 우리를 거두어 주시옵소서. 불쌍히 여겨 주시옵소서. 이것이 호세아가 전한 기도문이에요. 하지만 이들은 호세아가 직접 써서 이렇게 말만 하라고 입에 넣어주는데도 끝끝내 하나님께 돌아오지 않습니다. 그 결과가 뭐에요? 이스라엘의 멸망입니다. 앗시리아가 성을 포위해서 3년간 버티다가 결국 비참한 멸망의 길을 걷게 됩니다.

The message I originally prepared for today wasn't like this. It was about the promise of restoration given to those who return to God. But as I kept looking at the Scripture, I was utterly astonished. As we've been studying the book of Hosea, haven't we seen how desperately God called to the people of Israel? He even told the prophet Hosea, "Go, take for yourself a wife of prostitution. When she runs away, bring her back. This is what you are doing to me." Yet in Hosea 11:7, it says, "My people are determined to turn from me. Even though they call me God Most High, I will by no means exalt them" (NIV).

Today's chapter 14 is the last chapter of Hosea. This is Hosea's final call to repentance for the people of Israel. "Return, Israel, to the LORD your God. Your sins have been your downfall!" (Hosea 14:1, NIV). This is verse 1. Then in verse 2, it says, "Take words with you and return to the LORD. Say to him:" - this is the prayer of repentance. From verses 1 to 3, he makes them confess their sins in detail. In verse 3, "We will never again say 'Our gods' to what our own hands have made, for in you the fatherless find compassion" (Hosea 14:3, NIV). This is the prayer Hosea delivered. But even though Hosea wrote it directly and put it in their mouths, telling them just to say these words, they still refuse to return to God. What's the result? The destruction of Israel. Assyria surrounds the city, and after enduring for three years, they ultimately walk the path of miserable destruction.

그러면 저희에게는 의문이 남습니다. 그러면 오늘 말씀 4절부터 8절까지에 나와있는 이 하나님의 놀라운 회복에 대한 말씀은 대체 누구를 위한 것인가? 9절 말씀에 그 힌트가 있습니다. “누가 지혜가 있어 이런 일을 깨달으며 누가 총명이 있어 이런 일을 알겠느냐 여호와의 도는 정직하니 의인은 그 길로 다니거니와 그러나 죄인은 그 길에 걸려 넘어지리라.” 이 말씀은 호세아서 안에 있는 등장인물 그 어느 누구에게도 하시는 말씀이 아니고 바로 이 책을 읽고 있는 여러분을 위한 말씀입니다. 바로 이 하나님의 놀라운 회복은 이 글을 읽고 있는 여러분을 위한 것인 것입니다. 그렇다면 이것은 어떻게 가능한 것입니까? 앞에서 분명히 우리가 죄를 지으면 그 죗값을 치뤄야 하는데 우리는 그 죗값을 치루지 않았다고 하지 않았습니까? 그러면 아무리 우리가 하나님께 돌아간다고 한들, 회개한다고 한들, 어떻게 그 죗값이 치뤄지지 않고 회복이 있을 수 있고 어떻게 죗값이 치뤄지지 않고 하나님께서 우리를 다시 사랑하실 수 있습니까? 오늘 4절부터 8절까지처럼 어떻게 이런 놀라운 완전한 회복이 있을 수 있습니까? 바로 예수님 때문입니다. 바로 예수님께서 우리의 죗값을 대신 치뤄 주셨기 때문입니다. 예수님께서 우리를 대신하여 십자가에서 죽으셨기 때문입니다. 그렇기 때문에 우리가 돌아갈 수 있는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 우리가 회개 할 수 있는 것입니다. 예수님께서 우리의 죗값을 치뤄주셨기 때문에 오늘 4절 말씀처럼 하나님께서 기쁘게 우리를 사랑하실 수 있는 것입니다. 예수님께서 우리의 죗값을 치뤄주셨기 때문에 하나님의 진노가 우리에게서 떠날 수 있었던 것입니다. 모두 예수님 때문인 것입니다. 여러분 호세아서의 마지막에 호세아가 여러분께 묻습니다. 너는 지혜가 있어 이 일을 알겠느냐? 하나님의 사랑. 그것이 얼마나 애절한지, 얼마나 깊은지, 얼마나 넓은지. 너를 위하여 자신의 생명을 버리신 하나님의 사랑을 너희가 깨달았다면 알았다면. 하나님의 길을 걸으라. 하나님께 되돌아오라. 그리하면 하나님께서 너희를 회복하시리라. 기도하시겠습니다.

Then we're left with a question. Who are these amazing words of restoration in verses 4 to 8 for? The hint is in verse 9: "Who is wise? Let them realize these things. Who is discerning? Let them understand. The ways of the LORD are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them" (Hosea 14:9, NIV). These words are not for any character appearing in the book of Hosea, but for you who are reading this book. This amazing restoration from God is for you who are reading these words. Then how is this possible? Didn't we say earlier that if we sin, we must pay the price for that sin, but we haven't paid that price? Then how can there be restoration without paying the price for sin, and how can God love us again without the price of sin being paid? How can there be such an amazing, complete restoration as described in verses 4 to 8 today? It's because of Jesus. It's because Jesus paid the price for our sins in our place. It's because Jesus died on the cross in our place. That's why we can return. That's why we can repent. Because Jesus paid the price for our sins, God can love us freely as it says in verse 4 today. Because Jesus paid the price for our sins, God's anger could turn away from us. It's all because of Jesus.

At the end of the book of Hosea, Hosea asks you: Do you have the wisdom to understand this? God's love. How desperate it is, how deep it is, how wide it is. If you have understood, if you have realized God's love that gave up His own life for you. Walk in God's ways. Return to God. Then God will restore you. Let us pray.
