20241022 [새벽묵상] 자격없는 우리를 하나님의 자녀되게 하는 믿음 | Faith makes us, though unqualified, children of God (갈/Gal 3:1~9)

1 You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh? 4 Have you experienced so much in vain—if it really was in vain? 5 So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard? 6 So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”

7 Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. 8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” 9 So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

Last Friday, October 18th, former BLACKPINK member Rosé and American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars released a song called "APT" that garnered 80 million views in just three days. Inspired by the popular Korean "APT Game," the song immediately topped the Billboard Hot 100, and in the music video, Bruno Mars even waves the Korean flag – showing how K-pop's cultural influence has spread worldwide. This has led to a surge in K-pop enthusiasts globally, with countless people trying to emulate K-pop groups' dancing and singing. Recently, we've even seen the emergence of K-pop groups without any Korean members, leading to controversy. Many critics argue these groups can't be considered genuine K-pop without Korean members. What do you think? Can a K-pop group without Korean members truly be called K-pop?

Now, let's look at the Galatian church. This was primarily a Gentile congregation. Consider their perspective: Jesus, who died for them on the cross, was Jewish. His twelve disciples? All Jewish. The first church in Jerusalem? A Jewish church. Yet here was the Galatian church, mostly Gentiles, located in what is now central Turkey, far from Judea. Though Paul founded this church during his first missionary journey, we can see from today's passage that he had to teach them through letters, indicating he couldn't visit frequently. Imagine being in a Gentile church, far from Jerusalem's temple, in what many considered the periphery of the faith. How would you feel? Seeing that Jesus, the leaders, and the early church were all Jewish, wouldn't you want to become more like them – like these "real" believers?

This is when false teachers appeared, claiming that without becoming like Jews, the gospel of Christ would be meaningless. These false teachers insisted that for salvation, they needed to follow Jewish law – be circumcised, avoid unclean foods, and observe Jewish festivals. This teaching began to seep into the predominantly Gentile Galatian church through their admiration of Jewish believers and their own sense of inadequacy as Gentiles. Eventually, they began to believe they needed to follow Jewish law to be saved.

To this church, Paul cries out in verse 1, "You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified." What does this mean? It emphasizes that Christ's crucifixion is their clear sign of salvation. There is no salvation apart from Christ's cross. When Paul asks who has "bewitched" them, he's suggesting they've been deceived, as if by some sort of spell, away from the truth. So frustrated, he asks in verse 2, "I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard?" This tells us they had already received the Spirit, and that receiving the Spirit is closely tied to salvation.

So how does one receive the Spirit? Through keeping the law or through faith? If it were through keeping the law, these Gentiles – who hadn't even been circumcised, the most basic Jewish requirement – couldn't have received the Spirit, let alone salvation. What about faith? Ephesians 1:13 tells us, "And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit." We can see that when they heard and believed the gospel, they received God's promised Spirit as a seal confirming their salvation.

That's why Paul laments in verse 3, "Are you so foolish?" He asks again, "After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?" They had already received confirmation of their salvation through receiving the Spirit by faith. Now trying to achieve salvation through following the law was foolish. He asks again in verse 5, "So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?" He's emphasizing that their sanctification comes not from keeping the law but from believing in Christ's atoning sacrifice on the cross.

Then in verse 6, Paul brings up Abraham. Who is Abraham? The father of faith, yes, but he's also the ancestor of the Jews. If salvation came through keeping Jewish law, shouldn't Abraham, the father of all Jews, have kept the law? But what does verse 6 say? "So also Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." This one statement demolishes the entire argument that keeping the law is necessary for salvation.

Then comes verse 7: "Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham." Why had they fallen for the deception that they needed to keep the law to be saved? Wasn't it because, as Gentiles, they wanted to be like the Jews who were God's chosen people? And what does Paul tell them? Not only does verse 7 declare that those of faith are Abraham's children, but verse 9 adds, "So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith." Through faith, they receive not just equal standing with Jews but are blessed alongside Abraham himself. This is the position that children of God receive – far superior to the Jewish status they were trying to achieve through keeping the law.

Let me conclude. All of us here today are Gentiles who had no inherent right to God's promises. Yet God declares that we become His children not through our works but through faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ's atoning sacrifice on the cross. Faith makes us, though unqualified, children of God. This is amazing grace because our faith itself isn't righteous. God didn't declare Abraham's faith itself to be righteous; He "credited it to him as righteousness." He decided to count it as righteousness. Even though we may fail to keep the law perfectly and live in sin and unrighteousness, God has declared us free from judgment and righteous. This is why, as Martin Luther said, we can be simultaneously sinners and righteous. This is why we can become God's children through faith, not works. And this is entirely God's grace. My dear brothers and sisters, I pray in the Lord's name that you will receive this grace through faith and live as true children of God.
