1 Shout for joy to God, all the earth!

2     Sing the glory of his name;

    make his praise glorious.

3 Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!

    So great is your power

    that your enemies cringe before you.

4 All the earth bows down to you;

    they sing praise to you,

    they sing the praises of your name.”

5 Come and see what God has done,

    his awesome deeds for mankind!

6 He turned the sea into dry land,

    they passed through the waters on foot—

    come, let us rejoice in him.

7 He rules forever by his power,

    his eyes watch the nations—

    let not the rebellious rise up against him.

Brothers and sisters, how does today's passage speak about God? And how does it speak about humanity? The psalmist continually encourages us to praise God. He presents a list showing us who God is and why we should praise Him. Today, through this passage, I want to share with you the Lord's amazing nature and what our response should be.

First, as revealed in today's scripture, God possesses a glorious name. Verse 2 says, "Give him glory by praising his holy name." What is a name? It reveals who a person is. For example, my name is Jong-woo Lee. In Korean culture, names carry family lineage and generational markers. When people share the same family name, they often trace their ancestral roots and determine their relationships. Similarly, names personally identify us. And typically, names are given to us. I heard that my father spent several days searching through Chinese characters to give me my name, choosing the character meaning "good," as in academic rankings - excellent, good, fair, and poor. That's why, ironically, I was never really excellent in school - I was lucky to get "good" grades! But all joking aside, while my earthly father gave me my name, who gave God His name?

Did God have a father who named Him? No. God named Himself. How do we know His name? Because God revealed it to us. In Exodus 3:14, we read, "God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM.'" As mentioned earlier, God's name reveals His nature and attributes. Through His name, we can know who God is. This means God's name is the means by which He reveals Himself to us. That's why God reveals different aspects of His name in different situations. Many of you know these names: Jehovah Rapha - The Lord who heals; Jehovah Jireh - The Lord who provides; Jehovah Nissi - The Lord our banner of victory; Jehovah Shalom - The Lord our peace; Jehovah Shammah - The Lord who is present.

And there is the most important revelation of God's name. In John 17:6, Jesus says, "I have revealed your name to those you gave me out of the world." God revealed His name through Jesus Christ. What is this name? It is God's righteousness, God's love, and God's glory. Through Jesus Christ, God revealed who He truly is to all creation. Because God has such a glorious name, He is worthy of our highest praise.

Second, God possesses great power. Verse 3 states, "How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies cringe before you." Brothers and sisters, what power do enemies have before God? People often think of evil as equal and opposite to good. They mistakenly believe that good and evil have equal power. But that's not true. Satan can do nothing before God. We see this in the book of Job and during Jesus' ministry. No one can stand against God. All must submit before Him. God possesses such great power and authority. That's why the scripture says that by His great power, His enemies will submit to Him.

Because God has both a glorious name and great power, He is worthy of universal praise - praise from all creation. That's why verses 1 and 4 call for all the earth to praise Him. This same awesome God who rules the universe also works powerfully in the lives of us small and insignificant humans. Verses 5 and 6 speak of His works among people. Verse 6 says, "He turned the sea into dry land, they passed through the waters on foot." This isn't just a regular miracle - it's supernatural. It reveals God's wonder and great power again.

Imagine yourself like the Israelites in Exodus, being pursued by enemies. You thought you were being led forward, but suddenly there's a sea blocking your path. What is this sea? It's death. It's a more certain death than the pursuing enemy - a completely blocked path. There's nothing you can do in your own strength. But at that moment, through God's action, what was death before you becomes your escape route. It's not just another path. When God acts, what blocked us - what was certain death - becomes through God the very path of our salvation. With God, we overcome and pass through death. What is this? This is God's salvation. Thus, God is worthy of praise not only in ruling the universe but also in saving us in our human circumstances. And verse 7 tells us He "rules forever by his power."

So what should be our proper response to this God who has a glorious name and performs amazing works throughout the universe and human history with His great power? Verse 1: We should shout with joy to God. Verse 2: We should praise the glory of His name and make His praise glorious. Verse 3: We should tell God how awesome His deeds are. Verse 4: We should worship Him and sing praise to His name along with all creation. Verse 5: We should tell others what God has done. And we should invite them: "Come and see!" Verse 6: We should remember and rejoice in what God has done for us. Verse 7: We should humble ourselves before the Lord.

This is proper praise to the Lord who does wonderful things for us. And this is the purpose of us being His people. Isaiah 43:21 says, "The people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise." Yes, we must praise the Lord who does wonderful things.

In conclusion, we see God's glorious name - His righteousness, love, and glory revealed through Jesus Christ. We see God's great power - power that makes enemies submit and saves those who were facing certain death. As His people, we must praise this Lord who does such wonderful things.
