20241106 [새벽묵상] 환난의 때에 실족케하지 않으시는 주님을 찬양하라 | Praise the Lord who keeps us from stumbling in times of trouble (시/Ps 66:8~20)

8 Praise our God, all peoples,

    let the sound of his praise be heard;

9 he has preserved our lives

    and kept our feet from slipping.

10 For you, God, tested us;

    you refined us like silver.

11 You brought us into prison

    and laid burdens on our backs.

12 You let people ride over our heads;

    we went through fire and water,

    but you brought us to a place of abundance.

13 I will come to your temple with burnt offerings

    and fulfill my vows to you—

14 vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke

    when I was in trouble.

15 I will sacrifice fat animals to you

    and an offering of rams;

    I will offer bulls and goats.

16 Come and hear, all you who fear God;

    let me tell you what he has done for me.

17 I cried out to him with my mouth;

    his praise was on my tongue.

18 If I had cherished sin in my heart,

    the Lord would not have listened;

19 but God has surely listened

    and has heard my prayer.

20 Praise be to God,

    who has not rejected my prayer

    or withheld his love from me!

Yesterday, we shared a message titled "Praise the Lord Who Does Wonderful Things." We talked about how all creation praises the Lord for His wonderful name and great power, and how we, mere mortals, praise the amazing Lord who saves us from death and parts the sea before our eyes to make a way. Today, similarly, the psalmist continues to call everyone to praise God. Why are we called to praise God today? Let's look at verse 9. It's because He is "the God who preserves our lives and keeps our feet from slipping." What does this mean? Even when we face times of testing, God preserves our life and prevents us from stumbling. The psalmist is telling us to praise the Lord who preserves our lives and keeps us from stumbling even in times of trial.

So what kinds of tests do we face? First, it is refinement. Let's look at verse 10: "For you, God, tested us; you refined us like silver." God's testing of us means He is refining us, which is compared to the refining of silver. What does refinement mean? The dictionary defines it as "making metal harder by heating it and then hammering it." Therefore, refining metal necessarily involves the process of melting it with fire, cooling it with water, and hammering it. Through this process, all remaining impurities and unclean elements in the metal are burned away, allowing the blacksmith to create pure metal in the desired form. Similarly, God burns away other thoughts within us, especially sins, through this process to humble us so that we may seek Him with a pure heart.

That's why the second characteristic of God's testing is that He gives us trials we can bear. Let's look at verse 11: "You brought us into prison and laid burdens on our backs." When do we use nets? When we want to capture something alive. Even when we're caught, He doesn't harm our bodies. It says He laid burdens on our backs, and this is similar. Both being caught in a net and having heavy burdens tied to our backs speak of difficulties we cannot resolve with our own strength, where our freedom of movement is restricted, but these don't involve direct physical harm or irreversible injury. These are trials we can endure if the Lord directly intervenes. They are trials from which we can fully recover if the Lord just releases us from the net or unties the heavy burden. Even when we face times of testing, God preserves our lives.

So why does God allow such trials? Verse 12 says, "you brought us to a place of abundance." He's telling us that He leads us through these trials to bless us. Deuteronomy 8:16 says, "He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord." The purpose of the trial is not to make us lose our lives or stumble. The true reason God tests and refines us is to lead us away from sin and humble our hearts so that He can ultimately bless us.

So how do we respond when facing such trials? Verse 13 says, "I will come to your temple with burnt offerings and fulfill my vows to you." Verse 14 continues, "vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke when I was in trouble." As these verses suggest, we often make promises to God when we face trials. Looking at verse 15, we see that the psalmist fulfills the vows made during trials by offering "burnt sacrifices of fat animals... with the offering of rams." It's also God's grace that allows us to keep the vows we made with our lips, even though God didn't require them from us, as mentioned in verse 14. This too is the Lord's grace that keeps us from stumbling. We are weak and sometimes forget or fail to keep the promises we made to God with our lips. However, in my many years of faith, I've seen many cases where God leads situations so that such promises can be kept.

As one example, yesterday after our ministry team meeting, while we were having lunch together, Pastor Lim shared his story about when he first came to America. Among three pastors from Bundang Woori Church who applied for student visas to study in America, only Pastor Lim's family, who seemed least likely to receive visa approval, passed the visa interview. However, the embassy set one condition when passing the interview: he must return to Korea after completing his studies. Not only did they ask for a verbal promise, but they also made him raise his right hand and take an oath. What wouldn't you do to get a visa? He took the oath and came to America to study, and much time passed. The oath to return to Korea had already faded into distant memory. Then came the time to change from a student visa to a religious worker visa to begin ministry. Like me, people usually don't leave America when changing from a student visa to a religious worker visa. Re-entering requires getting a new visa sticker from the embassy, and if rejected, everything could be lost. It's too risky. However, Pastor Lim's immigration lawyer told him he couldn't change his visa status within the U.S. and had to return to Korea to get a religious worker visa. So his family had no choice but to visit Korea for the religious visa interview at the embassy. At that moment, he remembered the forgotten oath. That's when he realized, "Ah, God brought me back here to fulfill that oath I made back then." Thankfully, he received the visa and returned to America. Yes, we might forget our promises to God, but God doesn't forget. And He leads us to keep the promises we made. This too is God's grace that keeps us from stumbling.

God, who keeps us from stumbling when we face affliction and trials - because He is such a God, He hears our cries and prayers when we suffer. Verse 17 says, "I cried out to him with my mouth; his praise was on my tongue." Verse 19 declares, "but God has surely listened and has heard my prayer." Also, because the purpose of trials is to refine us by burning away our sins and humbling us, verse 18 states, "If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened." This doesn't mean He only listens to the prayers of perfectly clean people. However, as James 4:3 says, "When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures." God is the one who hears our prayers when we are tested. As verse 20 suggests, even in trials, He neither rejects our prayer nor withholds His love from us. This is the Lord we must praise.

Let me conclude. The Lord is the one who preserves our lives and keeps our feet from slipping. Even when trials or times of refinement come, we know that the Lord hears our prayers and helps us keep our vows. This is because He knows our weaknesses better than anyone else. Why? Because Jesus took on human form and was tested in every way, just as we are. Therefore, the Lord understands our hearts better than anyone else when we face trials. Because He is such a Lord, we can be confident no matter what trials or refinement come our way. The Lord hears our prayers, preserves our lives, and keeps our feet from slipping. Because He is such a Lord, we can always joyfully praise God. Let us praise together the Lord who keeps us from stumbling in times of trouble. Let us pray.
