may all the peoples praise you.

What image of God does today's text reveal to us? God is one who loves us, cares for us, and desires to bless us. Through Scripture, sermons, and Bible studies, we learn and understand how good God is and how great His love is. However, God's goodness isn't directed only toward us simply because we're His chosen ones. God's grand plan is to bless all peoples of the earth, from those in our immediate vicinity to all nations, through the blessings He gives us. That's why today's psalmist encourages us to praise the Lord who blesses all peoples through us.

First, let's look at how the Lord blesses through us - God is the one who blesses us. Let's look at verse 1 together: "May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us." Doesn't this verse sound familiar? You've probably heard it many times. It's very similar to the benediction that pastors give at the end of worship services. What is a benediction? It's a prayer of blessing. In fact, this verse mirrors Aaron's blessing in Numbers 6:24-25. It's the prayer that God taught Moses to tell Aaron to use in blessing the Israelites. However, unlike Numbers which begins with "The Lord bless you...," today's text shows that the recipients of God's blessing are "us" - the people of Israel. This tells us that God is the one who shows us grace and gives us blessings. So what does it mean that He makes His face shine upon us? While God's face can represent His glory, in Psalms it often signifies His salvation. Proverbs 16:15 explains it this way: "When a king's face brightens, it means life; his favor is like a rain cloud in spring." This means there is salvation - life - in the brightness of the king's face. And that grace is like clouds bringing the spring rain needed for crops. Similarly, God's blessing saves us, and His grace supplies our needs.

Perhaps this is why today's psalmist prays for God's blessing and salvation to be known throughout the earth and among all nations. Verse 2 says: "May your ways be known on earth, your salvation among all nations." But how does this becoming known throughout the earth and among all nations happen? Who does this work? Looking at the end of verse 1, "make his face shine on us," it's saying that God's ways and salvation become known to all nations through His blessing of Israel, through His blessing of us. Furthermore, verses 3 and 5 repeat the same message: "May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you." This one verse is repeated twice, and within each verse, there's another repetition: "may all the peoples praise you." In total, this phrase is repeated four times. This is actually the main theme of today's text. Perhaps the psalmist wrote this psalm because God's blessing to Israel was so great that he wanted His grace and salvation to be known throughout the earth and among all nations and peoples. However, the more I meditate on this passage, the more I believe this prayer isn't simply expressing personal or national desires. Even if it was, I think God accomplished His work through this psalmist's prayer. Why? Because the greatest blessing given to the Israelites - the greatest blessing given to us - is Jesus Christ. Therefore, if we interpret verse 2 as "May your ways (Jesus Christ's ways) be known on earth, your salvation (Jesus Christ's salvation) among all nations," this can be understood as a prophetic prayer.

Let's look at verse 4: "May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth." It says all the peoples of the world will sing to God with joy and gladness. Such things were impossible during Israel's time when this psalm was written. But if you look carefully at today's text, you'll notice that most verbs speak of future events: "will," "shall," "may." Who is the one who becomes king of all peoples and judges them with equity? Yes, it's Jesus Christ. Who is the one who rules the nations of the earth and guides them? This is talking about the Kingdom of God where Jesus reigns as king.

Look at verse 6: "The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us." Perhaps this prayer began because of a bountiful harvest, singing of God's blessing through the harvest. However, we need to focus more on the phrase "the land yields its harvest." Why? Because Genesis 3:17-18 says, "To Adam he said, 'Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, "You must not eat from it," cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.'" When Adam sinned, the ground was cursed because of him. So the earth wasn't meant to yield harvest but to produce thorns and thistles. Then what does verse 6 mean when it says the land yields its harvest? It's because Jesus, the second Adam, came down to earth to atone for the first Adam's sin, and through Jesus, the earth received blessing. It was restored from the curse. It yields its harvest.

And in the final verse 7, "God will bless us," what is this blessing? It is Jesus Christ. Through Jesus Christ's coming and saving us, as today's text says, "all the ends of the earth will fear him."

Let me conclude. God is the one who blesses us. He makes His face, which is grace, life, and salvation, shine upon us. Because He is such a God, He gave us Christ. God's only Son who died on the cross in our place. By granting us this amazing blessing, not only we but all peoples of the world can receive salvation. They can receive blessing. That's why, as today's text says, all peoples praise the Lord. Yes, the Lord came to us first. And through us, He blesses all peoples. We must praise the Lord who blesses all peoples through us. Let us pray.
