20241119 [새벽묵상] 죽음을 이기신 영광스러운 그리스도께서 그의 교회를 돌보십니다 | The Living Christ Among His Churches (계/rev 1:9~20)

[John’s Vision of Christ]

9 I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, 11 which said: “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.”

12 I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.

17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

19 “Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later. 20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

As Pastor Lim preached yesterday, the Book of Revelation is a letter written by the elder Apostle John to seven churches in the Roman province of Asia, representing all of Christ's churches at that time. These seven churches, located in what is now western Turkey, were facing many threats to their faith when Revelation was written: Roman persecution, false teachings, idolatry, compromise with surrounding pagans, and spiritual lethargy. It was to these struggling churches that the Apostle John testified about the glorious Christ who conquered death, whom he witnessed firsthand, and through Revelation, conveyed Christ's words of praise, rebuke, and encouragement to each church. Today, through our text, we will come to know Jesus, who is the hope of the church, by examining Christ's appearance as revealed in this passage.

First, in verse 9, the Apostle John introduces himself as a brother in the church who shares with them in the suffering, kingdom, and patient endurance in Jesus. Through these words, we can understand that the church was under persecution and was waiting patiently for God's kingdom to come quickly. We can see that John himself was exiled to the island of Patmos because of his testimony about God's word and Jesus. So what would have been the greatest desire of both the church and the Apostle John at this time?

We often hear about the early church. They experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit, and many miracles and signs were performed through the apostles. People sold their possessions and shared with those in need, devoted themselves daily to meeting together in the temple courts, and the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. They heard testimonies from those who had directly witnessed the risen Jesus, and firmly believed that Jesus, who ascended to heaven, would return in the same way. They waited each day with this hope. However, 30 to 60 years had passed since then. Many of the apostles they looked up to had been martyred. Even John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was exiled to Patmos. While they were waiting patiently for Jesus' return despite persecution, they might have wondered: "Will Jesus really come back? Did Jesus really rise from the dead? Could it be that He's not alive but actually remained dead?"

It was at such a time that the Apostle John heard Jesus' voice, as if out of nowhere. Verse 10 tells us that on the Lord's Day, John was in the Spirit and heard behind him a loud voice like a trumpet. The voice commanded him to write on a scroll what he saw and send it to these churches. John didn't recognize whose voice it was at first, so verse 12 tells us he turned around to see who was speaking. Verse 13 says he saw someone "like a son of man." Verses 14-16 describe this figure: "His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire." In the Old Testament book of Daniel, chapter 7:9-14, we find a similar vision: "As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool... In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed."

Who is the Ancient of Days? It's God. In Daniel, the one like a son of man receives authority, glory, and kingdom from God. Then who is this one like a son of man? It's the Messiah – Jesus. Jesus often referred to Himself as the Son of Man. The "Son of Man" in Daniel refers to the Lord. But look at today's passage in Revelation – how is the "one like a son of man" depicted? He appears just like the Ancient of Days from Daniel. This shows that Jesus is God. Jesus' glorious appearance is identical to God's appearance. Verse 16 says that out of his mouth came a sharp, double-edged sword. What does Hebrews 4:12 tell us is sharper than any double-edged sword? The word of God. Jesus shares both the appearance and power of God.

Who is the Apostle John? He was one of Jesus' twelve disciples who accompanied Jesus throughout His ministry. In the Gospel of John, he referred to himself as "the disciple whom Jesus loved." He was so close to Jesus that he would even recline next to Him during meals. Yet verse 17 tells us, "When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead." The fact that he wrote "one like a son of man" suggests he recognized it was Jesus. However, when Jesus appeared in such divine glory, John fell as though dead. This is the natural human response when standing before God's holy glory.

This Christ, as glorious as God Himself, tells John not to be afraid and reveals who He is. First, He is the First and the Last. He transcends time. He is the sovereign ruler over the timeline from creation to the end, beyond our understanding. Second, Christ is alive. What does this mean? It means the Lord has conquered death. The Lord indeed died for us, but because He rose again, He is the Living One. Third, because He conquered death, He lives forever and ever and holds the keys of death and Hades – meaning death and Hades are under Jesus' authority. And this living, glorious Christ now walks among the seven golden lampstands. He is caring for these struggling seven churches. How does He care for them? Through the seven stars in His right hand – through the angels He sends to the seven churches, Christ is caring for His body, the church. The glorious Christ who conquered death watches over His church. This is the first glimpse of the glorious Lord that John saw.

Let me conclude. To the seven churches exhausted by long persecution and difficulties both inside and outside, Christ appears in glory. The Christ who appeared to John was God Himself, and He made it clear to the doubting churches that He had conquered death, was alive, and would live forever. Through John's vision, this glorious Christ personally reveals that He is caring for His church through His angels. This must have brought unimaginable comfort and assurance of faith to the suffering churches of that time. Yes, Jesus Christ who rose from the dead is God. He is the Alpha and Omega – the First and the Last – and He lives forever. This glorious Christ who conquered death watches over His church. This is our hope. Let us pray.
