20250102 [새벽묵상] 우리에게 오신 하나님의 은혜와 진리 | Jesus is God's grace and truth who has come to us (요/Jhn 1:9~18)

[The Word Became Flesh]

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

A new year has begun. On this second day of the new year, I pray that God's grace will be abundant throughout the year for all of you who have gathered here in the Lord's house to hunger for His Word and devote yourselves to prayer. Today's message comes from the prologue of the Gospel of John.

What kind of gospel is John? We commonly refer to Matthew, Mark, and Luke as the Synoptic Gospels. The term "synoptic" comes from having a common viewpoint. These gospels have many similarities in their overall content about Jesus's life and ministry, their expression methods, and writing styles. However, the Gospel of John has very little overlap with these synoptic gospels. This is because John's Gospel, being the last of the four gospels to be written, largely omitted Jesus's life and ministry details that were already well-known through the synoptic gospels. So, to answer our initial question: what kind of gospel is John? It's a gospel that focuses on who Jesus is. According to John, Jesus is the Word. Jesus is the Light. Jesus is the Creator. Jesus is God. And Jesus is human. Jesus, who is the Word, the Light, the Creator, and God, became human and came to us for our salvation. Through Jesus's coming to us, God's grace and truth have come to us. Jesus is God's grace and truth that has come to us.

Who is Jesus according to John in today's passage? First, He is the one who comes to find us. In verse 9, "The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world." Verse 11, "He came to that which was his own." Verse 14, "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us." Verse 15, "John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, 'This is the one I spoke about when I said, "He who comes after me."'" Verse 17, "Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." The message repeatedly emphasized throughout today's passage is that Jesus is the one who comes to us and dwells among us. However, sadly, the world does not know Him. Looking at verse 10, "He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him." Even though the world was created through Jesus, it doesn't recognize Jesus as its master. Verse 11 is similar: "He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him." Now it doesn't even use the term "world" but says He came to His own land. What does this mean? It means Jesus is the owner of the world. Because Jesus is the creator and owner of this earth, it says He came to His own land. But His own people, who should have naturally received Him, did not. Who are His own people? They are the Israelites, God's chosen people. Though they were God's people, called His own, they rejected Jesus and crucified Him.

Then how should we receive Jesus who comes to us? We must accept Him. We must welcome Jesus into our hearts and acknowledge that He is the master of this world and the master of our lives. What happens then? The scripture says, "Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." Amen. He makes us children of God. God, the sovereign ruler of all creation, personally becomes our Father, our protector, our provider, and our savior. Therefore, when Jesus comes to us, we must receive Him.

Then who exactly is this Jesus who comes to us? Verse 14 says, "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." Who is the "we" in this passage? It refers to those who receive Him, those born of God. While the world didn't recognize Jesus, those who received Him could see His glory as He dwelt among them. People like the apostle John, who directly experienced Jesus, testify that His glory was the glory of God's only Son, full of grace and truth. Jesus is God's grace and truth that has come to us. Jesus's grace can also be found in verse 9 of today's passage. It says that Jesus, the true light, came into the world and gives light to everyone. Despite the world not knowing Him, Jesus's gracious light shines equally on everyone in the world, not just those who receive Him. And to those who do receive Him, verse 16 tells us that from His fullness - that is, from Jesus's fullness of grace and truth - we have received grace upon grace. What amazing grace this is!

Then what does Jesus's grace and truth mean, beyond just grace? Actually, this phrase parallels God's character as revealed in Exodus 34:6: "The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness." The Hebrew words for love and faithfulness were directly translated into Greek - God's unchanging covenant love and unwavering faithfulness. Thus, Jesus's grace and truth are equivalent to God's love and faithfulness. This shows that Jesus is God and possesses the same character as God. That's why we can know who God is through Jesus. That's why verse 18 of today's passage says that no one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

In conclusion, Jesus is God's grace and truth who has come to us. He is God's unchanging love and unwavering faithfulness that has come to us. And Jesus confirmed this love of God by dying on the cross in our place. Jesus came when we were still sinners. When the true light of the Lord shines His light on us, our proper response should be to receive Him. When we receive the right to become God's children, we will experience grace upon grace, as today's passage tells us. Let us pray.
