20250115 [새벽묵상] 자격 없는 우리와 전적인 하나님의 은혜 | God's Sovereign Grace that Saved Unqualified People like Us (요/Jhn 5:1~18)



5:1 그 후에 유대인의 명절이 되어 예수께서 예루살렘에 올라가시니라

5:2 예루살렘에 있는 양문 곁에 히브리 말로 베데스다라 하는 못이 있는데 거기 행각 다섯이 있고

5:3 그 안에 많은 병자, 맹인, 다리 저는 사람, 혈기 마른 사람들이 누워 (물의 움직임을 기다리니

5:4 이는 천사가 가끔 못에 내려와 물을 움직이게 하는데 움직인 후에 먼저 들어가는 자는 어떤 병에 걸렸든지 낫게 됨이러라)

5:5 거기 서른 여덟 해 된 병자가 있더라

5:6 예수께서 그 누운 것을 보시고 병이 벌써 오래된 줄 아시고 이르시되 네가 낫고자 하느냐

[The Healing at the Pool]

1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4]  5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”


5:7 병자가 대답하되 주여 물이 움직일 때에 나를 못에 넣어 주는 사람이 없어 내가 가는 동안에 다른 사람이 먼저 내려가나이다

7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”


5:8 예수께서 이르시되 일어나 네 자리를 들고 걸어가라 하시니

5:9 그 사람이 곧 나아서 자리를 들고 걸어가니라 이 날은 안식일이니

5:10 유대인들이 병 나은 사람에게 이르되 안식일인데 네가 자리를 들고 가는 것이 옳지 아니하니라

8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.


The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, 10 and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”


5:11 대답하되 나를 낫게 한 그가 자리를 들고 걸어가라 하더라 하니

11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”


5:12 그들이 묻되 너더러 자리를 들고 걸어가라 한 사람이 누구냐 하되

12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”


5:13 고침을 받은 사람은 그가 누구인지 알지 못하니 이는 거기 사람이 많으므로 예수께서 이미 피하셨음이라

13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.


5:14 그 후에 예수께서 성전에서 그 사람을 만나 이르시되 보라 네가 나았으니 더 심한 것이 생기지 않게 다시는 죄를 범하지 말라 하시니

5:15 그 사람이 유대인들에게 가서 자기를 고친 이는 예수라 하니라

14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.


5:16 그러므로 안식일에 이러한 일을 행하신다 하여 유대인들이 예수를 박해하게 된지라

5:17 예수께서 그들에게 이르시되 내 아버지께서 이제까지 일하시니 나도 일한다 하시매

5:18 유대인들이 이로 말미암아 더욱 예수를 죽이고자 하니 이는 안식일을 범할 뿐만 아니라 하나님을 자기의 친아버지라 하여 자기를 하나님과 동등으로 삼으심이러라

The Authority of the Son

16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.


 

                어제 우리는 말씀을 통하여 예수님께서 행하신 첫번째 표적과 두번째 표적 가운데 보지 않고 믿었던 하인들과 왕의 신하에 대해서 이야기 했었습니다. 오늘의 말씀은 예수님께서 행하신 표적 중에 세번째 표적, 38년된 병자를 낫게하시는 이야기를 다루고 있습니다. 1-18까지의 긴 본문이지만 등장 인물은 사실 셋밖에 되지 않습니다. 38년된 병자와 유대인들, 그리고 예수님입니다. 그러나 오늘의 표적 가운데 나타나는 사람들의 모습은 이전 표적에서 보여주었던 사람들과는 무척 대비가 되는 모습을 보게 됩니다. 38년된 병자는 예수님의 치유를 받을 아무런 자격이 없었습니다. 그는 끊임없이 남을 탓하는 사람이었고, 믿음을 가지거나 소망을 품고 있던 자가 아니었으며 예수님으로부터 나음을 입었음에도 예수님께 감사 하거나 예수님을 믿지도 아니하였죠. 배은망덕하게도 오히려 그는 예수님을 유대인들에게 고자질까지 하는 모습을 보여줍니다. 유대인들도 마찬가지입니다. 그들은 하나님이 자기백성으로 부르신 이들임에도 불구하고 안식일의 주인되시는 예수님을 알아보지 못하죠. 그리고 하나님되시는 예수님을 신성모독이라하여 죽이려고 합니다. 이들은 하나님의 은혜를 받을 아무런 자격이 없었습니다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 예수님께서는 이들에게 자신이 누구신지를 보이시고 이들을 위해 십자가에서 죽으셨습니다. 오늘은 이 이야기를 조금 해보려고 합니다. 바로 자격없는 우리와 전적인 하나님의 은혜에 대해서 말입니다.


Yesterday, we discussed Jesus' first and second signs, particularly focusing on the servants and royal official who believed without seeing. Today's message deals with Jesus' third sign - the healing of a man who had been an invalid for 38 years. Although this is a long passage from verses 1-18, there are really only three main characters: the invalid man, the Jewish leaders, and Jesus. However, the people in today's sign show quite a contrast to those we saw in the previous signs.

The man who had been an invalid for 38 years had no qualifications to receive Jesus' healing. He was someone who constantly blamed others, had no faith, held no hope, and even after being healed by Jesus, showed no gratitude nor believed in Him. Instead, ungratefully, he went on to report Jesus to the Jewish leaders. The Jewish leaders were no different. Despite being God's chosen people, they failed to recognize Jesus as the Lord of the Sabbath. They even sought to kill Jesus, accusing Him of blasphemy. These people had no qualifications to receive God's grace. Yet despite this, Jesus revealed who He was to them and died on the cross for them. Today, we'll explore this story - specifically about unqualified people like us and God's sovereign grace.



                자 그렇다면 첫번째로 자격없는 사람들에 대해서 이야기 해 봅시다. 먼저는 38년된 병자의 이야기입니다. 1절에 보니 유대인의 명절이 되어서 예수님께서 예루살렘에 올라가십니다. 예루살렘 성에 문이 여러 개가 있는데 그 중에 제사로 쓸 양을 데리고 들어오는 양문이라고 하는 문 곁에 베데스다라고 하는 못이 있었다고 합니다. 그 못 위에 지붕이 이렇게 있고 기둥이 그리스 양식으로 이렇게 다섯 개가 놓여져 있는데 3절을 보니 그 안에 많은 병자들이 물의 움직임을 기다렸다고 합니다. 왜 일까요? 4절을 보니 천사가 가끔 물을 움직이게 하는데 그때 제일 먼저 물에 들어가면 병이 낫는 다는 거에요. 그런데 거기에 38년된 병자가 있었다고 합니다. 38년 동안 그는 나음을 입지 못했어요. 그렇다면 그는 39년째에는 나음을 입으리라는 확신을 가지고 이곳에 있는 것일까요? 아마도 아닐 것입니다.


Let's first talk about these unqualified people. Looking at verse 1, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. In Jerusalem, near the Sheep Gate, there was a pool called Bethesda with five covered colonnades. As verse 3 tells us, many sick people waited there for the moving of the waters. Why? According to tradition, an angel would occasionally stir up the water, and whoever stepped in first would be healed. There was a man there who had been an invalid for 38 years. After 38 years without healing, do you think he was confident about being healed in his 39th year? Probably not.



6절에 보니 그는 누워있었어요. 예수님이 그를 보시는데도 그는 예수님이 누구신지도 몰라요. 병이 벌써 오래되서 그는 소망이나 기대를 잃었어요. 이제 이 사람은 그곳에 병이 나을려고 있는 것이 아니에요. 그냥 있는거에요. 저는 이 모습을 보면서 고시촌 생각을 합니다. 여러분 고시촌에 장수생들이 있어요. 이 사람들은 고시 패스는 못해요. 그리고 본인들도 자신들이 패스 못할 거라는걸 알아요. 그런데도 그들은 계속 고시촌을 떠나질 못해요. 왜냐하면 거기서 그만두면 자신은 고시에 실패한 실패자가 되는 거거든요. 그런데 계속 고시생으로 있으면 아직 자신이 가능성이 열려있는 사람 같아요. 그걸 놓지를 못하는 거에요. 이 사람도 마찬가지에요. 예수님이 물으세요. “네가 낫고자 하느냐?” 그러면 뭐라고 대답해야해요? “네 주님 낫게 해주십시오” 해야지요. 그런데 이 사람 7절에 뭐라고 대답합니까? “주여 물이 움직일 때에 나를 못에 넣어주는 사람이 없어” 내가 아직 낫지 못했습니다. 이 사람은 자신이 38년동안 여기 있었는데도 낫지 못한 것을 정당화하고 있어요. 나는 노력하고 있지만 안된다. 이건 나를 돕는 사람이 없어서 그런거다. 하면서 다른 사람 탓을 해요. 이 사람에게 믿음이 있습니까? 없어요. 나음에 대한 소망이 있습니까? 없어요. 예수님이 직접적으로 물어보셨어요. 니가 낫고자 하느냐? 이 사람이 그러면 예수님께 낫게 해달라고 말했나요? 아니요. 그렇다면 이 사람이 그곳의 많은 병자들 중에 예수님의 치유를 받기 합당한 사람이었나요? 아니요. 그런데 예수님 이 사람 낫게 하십니다. 아무런 자격없는 이를 낫게 하세요. 9절에 보니 “그 사람이 곧 나아서 자리를 들고 걸어가니라” 자리를 들고 일어나는 순종이나 믿음이 먼저였던 것이 아니에요. 나았기 때문에 자리를 들고 일어날 수 있었던 것이었어요. 이 사람 나음을 입었는데도 주님께 감사하지도 않습니다. 표적을 보고 주님을 믿지도 않아요.


Verse 6 shows us he was lying there. Even when Jesus saw him, he didn't know who Jesus was. Having been sick for so long, he had lost all hope and expectation. This man wasn't there to be healed anymore - he was just there. It reminds me of those perpetual exam-preparers who hang around testing districts. They know they won't pass their exams, but they can't leave because leaving would mean accepting failure. Similarly, this man was just existing.

When Jesus asked him, "Do you want to get well?" what should he have answered? "Yes, Lord, please heal me!" But what does he say in verse 7? "Sir, I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred." He's justifying why he hasn't been healed in 38 years. He's blaming others: "I'm trying, but no one helps me." Did this man have faith? No. Did he have hope for healing? No. Jesus asked him directly if he wanted to get well, but did he ask Jesus to heal him? No. Was he, among all the sick people there, worthy of Jesus' healing? No. Yet Jesus healed him.

Verse 9 tells us, "At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked." Notice that his obedience or faith didn't come first - he could pick up his mat because he was healed. Even after being healed, he didn't thank the Lord or believe in Him despite witnessing this sign.



자 이제 유대인이 나와요. 이 사람들이 이 병자를 알아보았을 거에요. 38년이나 거기 있었는데 모를 수가 없겠죠. 그런데 이 사람들이 병자가 나은 것을 보고 함께 기뻐하지는 못할 망정 비판을 해요. 너 안식일에 자리를 들고 가는 것은 잘못된 거야. 그랬더니 고침을 받은 사람이 누구 탓을 해요? 예수님 탓을 해요. 근데 더 웃긴건 유대인이 그게 누구냐고 물으니 고침을 받은 사람이, 예수님이 누구인지도 알지 못했어요. 나중에 예수님께서 이 사람을 성전에서 만납니다. 그리고 말씀을 하시죠. 니가 나았으니 죄를 짓지 말아라. 그랬더니 이 사람이 바로 유대인들에게 가서 자기를 고친 이가 예수님이시라는 것을 고자질 합니다. 어처구니가 없죠. 그리고 이 사람의 고자질을 시작으로 유대인들이 예수님을 박해하기 시작합니다. 나중에는 예수님을 죽이려고 해요. 본문의 유대인들도 이 사람과 다를 바가 없어요. 안식일의 주인이시며 하나님이신 예수님께서 자기 백성인 유대인들에게 오셨는데 그들은 예수님을 보지 못해요. 예수님을 알지 못해요. 예수님을 박해하고 결국 십자가에 못박는 것이 이들이지요. 이들에게 예수님의 은혜를 입을 자격이 있나요? 없습니다. 하나도 없어요. 오늘 말씀의 치유입은 병자든 유대인이든 아무도 예수님의 은혜를 입을 자격이 없습니다.



그렇다면 오늘 말씀에 나타난 예수님은 어떤 분이신가요? 첫번째로 생수의 강이십니다. 많은 병자들이 베데스다 연못에서 물이 움직이기를 기다렸지만 정작 예수님께서 생수의 강이 되심을 아는 사람은 아무도 없었죠. 생명의 물 되시는 주님께서 병자를 치유하시는 것입니다. 두번째로 전지하십니다. 6절에 예수님께서 병자가 누운 것을 보시고 병이 벌써 오래된 줄을 아셨다고 합니다. 예수님께서는 이미 병자의 상황을 누구보다도 잘 알고 계셨습니다. 예수님은 모든 것을 알고 계셨던 것입니다. 세번째로 예수님은 전능하십니다. 8절에 “예수께서 이르시되 일어나 네 자리를 들고 걸어가라 하시니” 그 말씀 대로 그 사람이 나음을 입었습니다. 네번째로 안식일의 주인이십니다. 병자가 나음을 입은 날이 바로 안식일이었죠. 예수님은 안식일의 주인이시기에 이런 표적을 안식일에 행하셨던 것입니다. 다섯번째로 예수님은 하나님과 동등하십니다. 이것은 17절에 예수님께서 직접 말씀으로 언급하신 것도 있지만 제가 말씀드린 본문의 예수님의 모습, 하나님의 보좌로부터 흘러나오는 생수의 강되시며 또 전지, 전능하시며 안식일의 주인되시는 예수님의 모습이 바로 하나님의 모습 그 자체인 것입니다. 오늘의 말씀을 통해 요한은 예수님께서 하나님되심을 우리에게 다시 보여주는 것입니다. 그러나 거기에만 그치는 것이 아니라 오늘의 이 세번째 표적은 하나님의 전적인 은혜 또한 우리에게 보여주고 있습니다. 아무런 자격없는 병자를 고치시고 그를 통하여 유대인들을 포함한 모든 인류를 구원하실 십자가의 대속의 계획을 시작하신 것입니다. 무엇을 통하여? 그들의 박해와 죽임을 통하여. 이것이 바로 주님의 전적인 은혜인 것입니다.


Then come the Jewish leaders. They must have known this man - he'd been there for 38 years. Instead of rejoicing at his healing, they criticize: "You can't carry your mat on the Sabbath!" And what does the healed man do? He blames Jesus. What's even more absurd is that when the Jewish leaders asked who it was, the healed man didn't even know who Jesus was. Later, Jesus finds him at the temple and says, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you." The man immediately goes to the Jewish leaders to report that it was Jesus who had healed him. This leads to the Jewish leaders beginning to persecute Jesus, eventually seeking to kill Him.

The Jewish leaders were no different from this man. Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath and God Himself, came to His people, but they didn't recognize Him. They persecuted Him and ultimately crucified Him. Did they deserve Jesus' grace? Not at all. Neither the healed invalid nor the Jewish leaders deserved Jesus' grace.

So who is Jesus in today's passage? First, He is the river of living water. Many sick people waited for the water to be stirred at Bethesda, but no one recognized that Jesus Himself was the living water. Second, He is omniscient. Verse 6 tells us Jesus knew how long the man had been in this condition. Third, He is omnipotent. In verse 8, when Jesus said, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk," the man was immediately healed. Fourth, He is Lord of the Sabbath. The healing occurred on the Sabbath because Jesus is its Lord. Fifth, Jesus is equal with God. This is not only explicitly stated in verse 17, but all His attributes - being the river of living water, being omniscient and omnipotent, being Lord of the Sabbath - these are all attributes of God Himself.

Through this passage, John shows us again that Jesus is God. But this third sign doesn't stop there - it also shows us God's sovereign grace. He healed an unqualified invalid and, through him, began His plan of redemption through the cross to save all humanity, including the Jewish leaders. How? Through their persecution and killing of Him. This is God's sovereign grace.



말씀을 맺습니다. 본문의 말씀의 배경이 되는 베데스다는 히브리어 원문으로 ‘은혜의 집’이라는 뜻이 있습니다. 이곳에서 예수님께서는 아무런 자격 없는 38년된 병자를 고치셨습니다. 이것은 전적인 하나님의 은혜였습니다. 그리고 자기 백성이라고 일컬음을 받았던 유대인들이 주님을 거절하고 박해하고 결국 십자가에 못박기까지 이르지만 주님은 그런 자격없는 자들을 구원하시려 오늘의 이 세번째 표적을 행하셨습니다. 이 세번째 표적을 통하여 예수님은 십자가의 계획을 시작한 것입니다. 여러분 우리는 모두 38년된 병자나 유대인들과 다를 바가 없습니다. 우리는 주님의 은혜를 입을 자격이 없는 사람들입니다. 그러나 하나님의 전적인 은혜로 우리는 십자가에서 대속하신 예수 그리스도의 피로 구원을 얻은 것입니다. 자격 없는 우리를 구원하신 그 놀라운 은혜, 전적인 하나님의 은혜, 그 은혜에 감사하시면서 주님 앞에 나아가시기를 원합니다. 기도하시겠습니다.

 

Let me conclude. Bethesda in Hebrew means "house of grace." Here, Jesus healed a man who had been an invalid for 38 years and had no qualifications. This was God's sovereign grace. And although God's chosen people rejected Him, persecuted Him, and ultimately crucified Him, Jesus performed this third sign to save such unqualified people. Through this third sign, Jesus began His plan of the cross.

Brothers and sisters, we are no different from the invalid man or the Jewish leaders. We have no qualifications to receive the Lord's grace. Yet by God's sovereign grace, we have received salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ who died for us on the cross. As we come before the Lord today, let us be thankful for this amazing grace - God's sovereign grace - that saved unqualified people like us. Let us pray.
