20250121 [새벽묵상] 하늘에서 내려온 떡을 먹고 생명을 얻으라 | Eat the Bread from Heaven and Receive Life (요/Jhn 6:41-59)

41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”

43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

After Jesus performed the miracle of feeding the five thousand, many people began to follow Him. Jesus then told them that they were following Him because they ate the bread and were satisfied, warning them not to work for food that spoils but for food that endures to eternal life. Jesus declared that He Himself is the bread that came down from heaven. As I reflected on this passage, I pondered deeply.

Surely Jesus understood our earthly needs. We cannot live without physical sustenance. So why did Jesus tell us to work not for physical food but for the bread of life? Was Jesus dismissing our practical needs as meaningless? Certainly not. The reason Jesus spoke this way points to humanity's greatest problem: death. All humans die. There are no exceptions. If our lives simply end in death, nothing could be more meaningless. All pleasure loses its meaning in the face of death. It's like having an elaborate feast on railroad tracks with a train approaching – there can be no real joy in that. Death is life's greatest problem that we cannot solve on our own.

But Jesus came to us. He declares Himself as the bread that came down from heaven. And He tells us to eat this bread and receive eternal life. Jesus, the Bread of Life, came to provide the solution to the problem of death that we couldn't solve ourselves. When we eat this bread, we receive life instead of death. We must eat this bread.

Let's look at the first example of bread from heaven: manna. When the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years, God provided for them in that barren wilderness through manna. As Deuteronomy 8:4 tells us, "Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years." The desert was a harsh land with no means of sustaining life. In that wilderness where they could rely on no one, where there was no source of provision, God supplied their physical needs. However, in verse 49 of today's passage, Jesus says about this manna: "Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died." Although manna was bread given by God, those who ate it did not receive eternal life because it was physical sustenance from heaven, not spiritual.

The second bread from heaven in today's passage is Jesus Himself. From the beginning of this text, Jesus refers to Himself as the bread from heaven. In verse 50, He says this is "the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die." That's why in verse 48, He declares, "I am the bread of life." Jesus is the bread from heaven, and whoever eats this bread will not die.

However, when Jesus said He came from heaven, people began to grumble, as we see in verses 41 and 42. They knew Jesus' background and His parents, so His claim to have come from heaven made no sense to them. But this was because they only saw Jesus' physical nature and didn't understand His divine origin. The Gospel of John begins by clearly stating that Jesus was with God from the beginning. It firmly establishes that Jesus came from God.

Similarly, after the miracle of the five loaves and two fish, Jesus repeatedly calls Himself the bread of life. As verse 54 states, "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life." This isn't meant to be taken literally. In verse 47, Jesus says, "Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life." Eating Jesus' flesh and drinking His blood means believing in His death on the cross for our sins. It refers to faith in Jesus' atoning sacrifice. "Whoever believes has eternal life." When we hear and believe in Jesus, we receive eternal life.

So what does this eternal life look like? Verse 56 tells us that we remain in Jesus, and He in us. And in verse 57, just as Jesus lives because of the Father who is the source of life, we who believe in Jesus will live because of Him. This is the picture of eternal life presented in today's passage. Jesus, who has God's life, shares that life with us so that we too may live forever. We remain in Jesus who is life, and Jesus who is life remains in us. Therefore, we live eternally through Jesus. This is what it means to eat the true bread from heaven – not like the manna the Israelites ate and died, but receiving life by partaking in Jesus, the true Bread of Life.

In closing, death is the unsolvable human problem. Jesus, the Bread of Life who came down from heaven, provides the solution. When we believe in Jesus' atoning sacrifice on the cross, where He shed His blood and died for us, we receive life and are freed from life's greatest problem. Jesus is the Bread of Life that came down from heaven. We must eat this bread to receive life. Let us pray together.
