20250206 [새벽묵상] 예수님의 양이 됩시다 | Let Us All Become Jesus's Sheep (요/Jhn 10:22~31)

[Further Conflict Over Jesus’ Claims]

22 Then came the Festival of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. 24 The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”

25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him,

After the Feast of Tabernacles, which commemorated God's guidance and protection in the wilderness, the Feast of Dedication arrived in Jerusalem. The autumn of Tabernacles had passed, and winter had come. The Feast of Dedication, literally meaning "the feast of dedicating the repaired temple," is now well known as Hanukkah. Just as Christians have Christmas, Hanukkah is a major holiday for Jewish people. However, this feast doesn't appear in the Old Testament. To understand the Feast of Dedication, we need to know the 400-year history between the Old and New Testaments. During this period without God's written word, there was a king named Antiochus IV Epiphanes of the Seleucid dynasty. The name "Epiphanes" itself comes from Greek, meaning "God manifest," as he deified himself. He invaded Jerusalem and severely persecuted the Jews, culminating in 167 BC when he desecrated the temple by erecting a statue of Zeus and sacrificing pigs. The Feast of Dedication commemorates the significant event when Judah Maccabee's revolution recaptured and purified the defiled temple in 164 BC, rededicating it to God. It was during this feast celebrating the temple's rededication that Jesus, who is God's temple sent holy into the world, was walking in the temple courts, as mentioned in verse 36 tomorrow. And once again, the Jews gathered around Him and started an argument.

In today's passage, Jesus distinguishes between those who are His sheep and those who are not. Today, I want to share a message titled "Let Us All Become Jesus's Sheep."

First, let's look at those who are not Jesus's sheep. In verse 24, "The Jews gathered around him, saying, 'How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.'" Looking at this verse alone, it might seem that these people didn't believe because Jesus hadn't spoken clearly to them. In the original text, when they ask "how long will you keep us in suspense?" they're literally asking how long He will hold up their hearts. In modern terms, they're saying, "How long will you keep us guessing? Just tell us straight - are you or aren't you?" This reminds us of a similar question they asked John the Baptist. In John 1:19-20, "When the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him who he was... He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, 'I am not the Christ.'" Even after such a clear statement, they kept asking him, "Who are you then? Why do you baptize?" Remember that John then pointed to Jesus, saying he wasn't worthy to even untie the straps of His sandals.

Similarly, when they came to Jesus, He answered in verse 25, "I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father's name testify about me." Jesus had already told them. As we've been meditating on John's Gospel since last month, hasn't Jesus told them many times? He told them that God was His Father and that the Father sent Him. Despite the signs Jesus performed proving His identity, they still wouldn't believe. Even the Samaritan woman, whom Jews considered no better than dogs, recognized Jesus and said in 4:29, "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?" In Monday's dawn prayer passage, even the blind man in 9:38 "said, 'Lord, I believe,' and he worshiped him." These Jews weren't unbelieving because Jesus hadn't spoken clearly. As we see in 9:22, "The Jews had already decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue." They had already decided not to believe in Jesus. That's why they weren't His sheep. Verse 26 states, "but you do not believe because you are not my sheep."

So then, who are Jesus's sheep? Verse 27 says, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." This is the same message as yesterday, isn't it? First, Jesus's sheep hear His voice, and second, Jesus knows them. Just as we discussed yesterday, He knows each sheep by name, knowing all our circumstances and situations. Just as God the Father knows Jesus, Jesus also knows us. And reflecting on yesterday's message, we as sheep know Jesus's voice. That's why, third, He says "they follow me." How could sheep follow the shepherd if they don't recognize his voice? And when sheep follow the shepherd, doesn't it mean the shepherd goes ahead of them? Doesn't the shepherd lead and protect the sheep's path? Where does He lead? Psalm 23: "The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters." And what else? "He refreshes my soul." Yes, and in today's verse 28, "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand." Amen. When you're in Jesus's hands, no one can snatch you away. The eternal life that our Lord gives to His sheep cannot be taken away. Verse 29 continues, "My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand." He says it a second time. What does this mean? It's definitive. It shows what God has determined. While no one can snatch us from Jesus's hands, if there were one person who could, who would it be? It would be God the Father. But when no one can snatch us from the hands of God, who is greater than all creation, what does verse 30 say? "I and the Father are one." This means that when we sheep are in Jesus's hands, we are also in God's hands, who is greater than all and from whom no one can snatch us away. When we become sheep who hear and believe in Jesus's voice, no one can snatch us from the hands of Jesus and God.

To conclude, we must all become Jesus's sheep. Those who refused to listen to the Word and believe in Jesus, He says are not His sheep. But we who are His sheep hear Jesus's voice. Jesus knows His sheep, and we sheep follow Jesus. Then no one can snatch us from Jesus's hands. The word "snatch" here is the same word used in yesterday's passage where wolves snatch the sheep from hired hands. This word reminds us of yesterday's parable of the Good Shepherd and the hired hand. Jesus, our Good Shepherd, lays down His life for the sheep. And by willingly giving His life, He gives us eternal life. He makes it so we will never perish. And no one can snatch us from His hand. I pray in the Lord's name that you all become sheep of Jesus, our Good Shepherd.
