Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”
11:40 예수께서 이르시되 내 말이 네가 믿으면 하나님의 영광을 보리라 하지 아니하였느냐 하시니
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”
11:41 돌을 옮겨 놓으니 예수께서 눈을 들어 우러러 보시고 이르시되 아버지여 내 말을 들으신 것을 감사하나이다
11:42 항상 내 말을 들으시는 줄을 내가 알았나이다 그러나 이 말씀 하옵는 것은 둘러선 무리를 위함이니 곧 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 그들로 믿게 하려 함이니이다
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”
11:43 이 말씀을 하시고 큰 소리로 나사로야 나오라 부르시니
11:44 죽은 자가 수족을 베로 동인 채로 나오는데 그 얼굴은 수건에 싸였더라 예수께서 이르시되 풀어 놓아 다니게 하라 하시니라
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
오늘 말씀의 죽은 나사로를 다시 살리시는 표적은 요한복음 전체에 있는 7가지 예수님의 신성을 보여주는 표적 중 가장 마지막 표적입니다. 이 표적을 통하여 예수님께서 부활이시요 생명이심을 직접적으로 드러내서 보여주시지요. 또한 이 표적은 예수님의 부활에 대한 복선으로서 4복음서 중 오직 요한복음에만 있는 이 표적을 통하여 예수님 또한 이보다 더욱 영광스러운 모습으로 부활하실 것임을 알려주는 장치인 것입니다. 이렇게 가장 중요하고 영광스러운 표적이기에 예수님께서는 이 표적을 그가 사랑하시는 삼남매, 마리아와 마르다, 그리고 나사로를 통하여서 드러내십니다. 그러나 이 영광스러운 표적에 참여하게 되는 마리아, 마르다, 그리고 나사로는 인간적인 눈으로 보았을 때 그 과정 가운데서 고난과 슬픔, 죽음까지도 겪어야만 했습니다. 이것에 오늘 말씀의 아이러니가 있습니다. 예수님께서 하나님의 영광을 드러내시기 위해 당신께서 사랑하는 자들을 선택하십니다. 우리의 생각으로는 그렇다면 꽃길 만을 걸어야 할 터인데 오히려 그 영광이 드러나기까지의 과정은 가시밭길인 경우가 많은 것입니다. 또 우리의 믿음을 시험 받는 경우가 많습니다. 그러나 그 고통의 과정을 믿음으로 끝까지 견뎌낸다면 우리는 우리가 상상할 수도 없는 하나님의 영광을 보게 될 것입니다. 오늘은 이렇게 사랑하는 자를 통하여 드러내시는 하나님의 영광에 대해서 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.
Today's message about the sign of raising Lazarus from the dead is the last of the seven signs in the Gospel of John that demonstrate Jesus's divinity. Through this sign, Jesus directly reveals that He is the resurrection and the life. Furthermore, this sign serves as a foreshadowing of Jesus's own resurrection, and it appears only in John's Gospel among the four Gospels, indicating that Jesus Himself would be resurrected in an even more glorious manner. Because this is such an important and glorious sign, Jesus chooses to reveal it through the siblings He loves - Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. However, from a human perspective, Mary, Martha, and Lazarus had to endure suffering, sorrow, and even death to participate in this glorious sign. This is where we find today's irony.
Jesus chooses those whom He loves to reveal God's glory. In our human thinking, this should mean walking on a path of roses, but often the process until that glory is revealed is more like walking through thorns. Our faith is frequently tested. However, if we endure this painful process with faith until the end, we will witness God's glory beyond our imagination. Today, we want to share the message about God's glory revealed through those He loves.
사랑하는 자들을 통하여 드러내시는 하나님의 영광. 그 첫번째, 하나님의 영광은 우리가 상상할 수 없습니다. 예수님께서 우시는 것을 보고 36절에 유대인들이 말하죠 “보라 그를 얼마나 사랑하셨는가 하며” 그러자 37절에서 “그중 어떤 이는 말하되 맹인의 눈을 뜨게 한 이 사람이 그 사람은 죽지 않게 할 수 없었더냐 하더라” 얼핏 보면 예수님께 비아냥거리는 것처럼 보이기도 합니다. 그런데 사실 말은 맞는 말이에요. 그렇지않습니까? 예수님이 나사로를 이렇게나 사랑하시는데 선천적으로 눈먼 자를 고치실 수 있는 능력을 가지신 분이 왜 나사로를 죽지 않게 치료하지 않았냐 하는 것이지요. 이 질문은 사실 나사로 사건을 관통하는 질문이기도 합니다. 여러분 예수님께서 이곳 베다니로 오셨을 때 마르다가 예수님 오셨다는 말씀을 듣고 아직 마을로 들어오지도 않으신 예수님께 마중을 나갑니다. 그리고 예수님께 드렸던 그 첫마디가 이 것이에요. 어제 말씀, 21절입니다. “마르다가 예수께 여짜오되 주께서 여기 계셨더라면 내 오라버니가 죽지 아니하였겠나이다.” 그리고 나중에 마리아도 예수님께 나아옵니다. 마리아가 예수님께 나아와서 했던 첫마디도 이 것이에요. 마찬가지로 어제 말씀 32절입니다. “마리아가 예수 계신 곳에 가서 뵈옵고 그 발 앞에 엎드리어 이르되 주께서 여기 계셨더라면 내 오라버니가 죽지 아니하였겠나이다” 자 그리고 오늘 말씀 37절입니다. “맹인의 눈을 뜨게 한 이 사람이 그 사람은 죽지 않게 할 수 없었더냐” 여러분 이 말씀들 사이에서 공통되는 부분이 보이십니까? “죽지 아니하였겠나이다,” “죽지 아니하였겠나이다,” “죽지 않게 할 수 없었더냐.” 이들이 무엇을 강조하고 있습니까? 그렇지요. 죽음입니다. 아무리 날고 기는 예수님이라도 한번 죽은 사람은 돌이킬 수 없다는 것입니다. 살아있으면, 살아만 있으면 예수님이 어떻게든 해보실 수 있으시겠지요. 그러나 한 번 죽은 사람은 돌아 올 수 없다는 것입니다. 그들은 그것을 너무도 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그들이 가지고 있는 인간의 사고로는 그 누구도 이 죽음의 권세를, 죽음의 힘을 이길 수 있는 자가 없었습니다.
God's glory revealed through His loved ones - first point: God's glory transcends the problem of death. When the Jews saw Jesus weeping, they said in verse 36, "See how he loved him!" Then in verse 37, "But some of them said, 'Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?'" At first glance, this might seem like they're mocking Jesus. But actually, they have a point, don't they? If Jesus loved Lazarus so much, and He had the power to heal a man born blind, why didn't He prevent Lazarus from dying? This question actually penetrates the entire Lazarus narrative. When Jesus came to Bethany, Martha went out to meet Him before He even entered the village. And her first words to Jesus were, as we saw yesterday in verse 21, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." Later, when Mary came to Jesus, her first words were the same. As we saw yesterday in verse 32, "When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.'" And now in today's verse 37: "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?" Do you see the common thread in these statements? "Would not have died," "would not have died," "kept from dying." What are they emphasizing? That's right - death. Even if Jesus was capable of many amazing things, they believed that once someone died, there was no turning back. If someone was still alive, perhaps Jesus could do something. But once someone died, they couldn't return - they knew this all too well. In their human understanding, no one could overcome the power of death.
39절도 마찬가지입니다. “예수께서 이르시되 돌을 옮겨 놓으라 하시니 그 죽은 자의 누이 마르다가 이르되 주여 죽은 지가 나흘이 되었으매 벌써 냄새가 나나이다.” 여러분 마르다가 믿음이 약한 사람이 아닙니다. 바로 어제 말씀에 마르다가 이렇게 고백해요. 27절입니다. “주여 그러하외다 주는 그리스도시요 세상에 오시는 하나님의 아들이신 줄 내가 믿나이다.” 이런 고백을 한 마르다조차도 뭐라고 말합니까? “죽은 지가 나흘이 되었으매” 이 죽음의 문제가 얼마나 큰 것인지 예수님을 하나님의 아들이라고 고백한 마르다조차도 예수님께서 이 죽음의 문제를 이기실 것이라고는 생각하지 못하는 것입니다. 그러나 예수님께서 말씀하십니다. 40절, “네가 믿으면 하나님의 영광을 보리라 하지 아니하였느냐” 그리고 우리는 곧 보게 됩니다. 예수님께서 말씀하신 하나님의 영광이 이들이 상상하지도 못했던 나사로의 부활을 통하여 보게 되는 것입니다. 하나님의 영광은 우리 인간이 상상할 수조차 없는 우리의 사고를 뛰어넘는 것입니다.
Verse 39 shows this too: "Take away the stone," Jesus said. "But, Lord," said Martha, the sister of the dead man, "by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days." Now, Martha wasn't someone of weak faith. Just yesterday, we read her confession in verse 27: "Yes, Lord," she told him, "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world." Yet even Martha, who made such a confession, what does she say? "He has been there four days." The issue of death was so significant that even Martha, who confessed Jesus as the Son of God, couldn't imagine that Jesus would overcome death. But Jesus says in verse 40, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" And soon we witness it - God's glory overcoming death through Lazarus's resurrection. God's glory transcends humanity's greatest problem - death.
사랑하는 자들을 통하여 드러내시는 하나님의 영광, 그 두번째. 이들을 통하여 많은 이들로 믿게 하십니다. 마리아와 마르다, 그리고 나사로는 나사로의 병듦과 죽음으로 인하여 많은 슬픔과 고통을 겪어야만 했습니다. 분명히 예수님께서 4절 말씀에 “이 병은 죽을 병이 아니라 하나님의 영광을 위함이요”라고 말씀하셨지만 나사로는 죽고 말았지요. 예수님이 나중에 대놓고 말씀하십니다. 나사로가 죽었다고요. 말이 앞뒤가 안 맞지요. 게다가 6절을 보니 예수님께서 이들을 사랑하셨기 때문에 죽어가는 나사로에게 바로 가지 않으시고 이틀을 더 계십니다. 이상해요. 그래서 결국 나사로가 죽지 않습니까? 마리아와 마르다 입장에서는 피가 말릴 일이에요. 예수님께 심히 상처받을 일입니다. 나중에 15절에 보면요 “내가 거기 있지 아니한 것을 너희를 위하여 기뻐하노니” 라고 까지 하십니다. 이젠 헷갈려요. 사랑하시는 것이 과연 맞나? 그러나 예수님께서는 목적이 있으셨습니다. 이유가 있으셨어요. 15절 하반절입니다. “이는 너희로 믿게 하려 함이라.” 예수님께서는 예수님께서 사랑하시는 자들을 통하여 하나님의 영광을 드러내시기 원하셨습니다. 그리고 그 영광이 드러날 때 많은 이들이 예수님을 믿게 되는 것입니다. 이것이 예수님의 목적이었습니다. 오늘 말씀도 마찬가지입니다. 무덤의 돌을 옮겨놓자 예수님께서 눈을 들어 하나님께 기도하십니다. 42절입니다. “이 말씀 하옵는 것은 둘러선 무리를 위함이니 곧 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 그들로 믿게 하려 함이니이다.” 예수님께서 사랑하는 자들을 통하여 하시고자 했던 것은 하나였습니다. 하나님의 영광을 드러내는 것. 그리고 그 영광을 보고 많은 이들이 예수님을 믿게 되는 것입니다. 그러나 하나님의 영광이 드러나는 그 과정은 결코 쉬운 것이 아니었습니다. 하나님의 영광을 드러내기 위해 나사로는 병을 앓다가 죽어야만 했고 마리아와 마르다는 예수님이 오시지 않아 죽어가는 나사로를 지켜보아야만 했습니다.
God's glory revealed through His loved ones - second point: Through them, He leads many to believe. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus had to endure much sorrow and pain due to Lazarus's illness and death. Although Jesus said in verse 4, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory," Lazarus did die. Jesus later explicitly states that Lazarus is dead. It seems contradictory. Moreover, verse 6 tells us that because Jesus loved them, He stayed where He was two more days instead of going immediately to the dying Lazarus. It's strange. And consequently, Lazarus dies. From Mary and Martha's perspective, this must have been heart-wrenching. They could have felt deeply hurt by Jesus. Later in verse 15, Jesus even says, "For your sake I am glad I was not there." Now it's confusing - was this really love? But Jesus had a purpose. He had a reason. The latter part of verse 15 explains: "So that you may believe." Jesus wanted to reveal God's glory through those He loved. And when that glory was revealed, many would come to believe in Jesus. This was Jesus's purpose.
In today's passage, when they moved the stone from the tomb, Jesus looked up and prayed to God. Verse 42 says, "I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me." Jesus had one purpose in working through those He loved: to reveal God's glory and through that glory, lead many to believe in Him. However, the process of revealing God's glory was not easy. To reveal God's glory, Lazarus had to fall ill and die, and Mary and Martha had to watch their brother die while Jesus didn't come.
말씀을 맺습니다. 예수님께서 사랑하시는 마리아와 마르다, 나사로를 통하여 하나님의 영광을 드러내셨습니다. 예수님께서 큰 소리로 나사로를 부르시자 죽었던 나사로가 다시 살아나옵니다. 우리가 상상할 수도 없는 하나님의 영광이 부활을 통하여 드러났습니다. 그리고 이것을 본 많은 유대인이 예수님을 믿게 됩니다. 자 그러면 이제 여러분 차례입니다. 하나님께서는 여러분을 사랑하십니다. 여러분을 통하여 하나님의 영광을 드러내기 원하십니다. 그 길은 여러분에게 어려운 길일 수 있습니다. 고난의 길일 수 있습니다. 그러나 여러분께서 그 과정을 견뎌내신다면 여러분은 우리가 상상할 수도 없는 크신 하나님의 영광을 보게 되실 것입니다. 그리고 그 영광을 보고 많은 이가 주님을 믿게 될 것입니다. 여러분을 통해 하나님의 크신 영광이 드러나게 되기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
Let me conclude. Jesus revealed God's glory through Mary, Martha, and Lazarus whom He loved. When Jesus called out in a loud voice, Lazarus came back to life. God's glory overcomes death. And seeing this, many Jews believed in Jesus. Now it's your turn. God loves you. He reveals His glory through you. This path may not be easy. However, if you endure this process, you will witness God's glory beyond our imagination. And seeing that glory, many will come to believe in the Lord. I pray in the Lord's name that God's great glory will be revealed through you.
