20250226 [새벽묵상] 감당할 만한 시험을 허락하시는 주님 | Jesus Permits Only Trials We Can Bear (요/Jhn 16:1~15)

1 “All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, 5 but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

In yesterday's message, Jesus said that just as the world hated Him, His disciples would also be hated by the world because of His name. The disciples who heard Jesus' words must have wondered why Jesus was saying these things now. They knew that the Jews hated Jesus and wanted to kill Him. But now Jesus' focus had shifted from Himself to the disciples. Jesus was telling them that the world would hate them because of Him, but strangely, He was saying that they—not Jesus—would be the ones receiving this hatred and persecution. So where would Jesus be when we face hatred and persecution? What does it mean that we will testify about Jesus? Jesus answers these questions in today's text, John 16:1, explaining, "All this I have told you so that you will not fall away." Jesus was telling them these things in advance so that after His departure, they would not stumble when facing difficulties. When Jesus would leave the disciples, they would face persecution and suffering because of His name. He told them this beforehand and comforted them by saying it would actually be to their advantage (16:7). Jesus prepared His disciples in advance. Although He knew they would go through difficult times of suffering, He forewarned them and comforted them so they could endure these times. He encouraged them. In this way, Jesus permitted them trials they could bear. Today, I want to share this message with you: The Lord who permits only trials we can bear.

In today's passage about the Lord who permits only trials we can bear, first, the Lord prepares His disciples in advance. Jesus tells the disciples that just as the world hated Him, it would hate them too. But the world's hatred toward them wouldn't end with just feelings of hatred. Verse 2 says, "They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God." Their hatred would result in the disciples being expelled from the synagogues. Expulsion meant being banished from Jewish community society. When expelled, a person was no longer treated as a Jew but as a Gentile and was excluded from God's people. For a Jew, this was spiritually equivalent to eternal death. Jesus also said that the time would come when people would kill them, foretelling their martyrdom. He warned them that the hatred toward the disciples would intensify to the point that people would not only expel them but eventually kill them. He revealed these things in advance to prepare them so they would not fall away when the time came. Verse 4 says, "I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you." Jesus was telling them about their coming hardships in advance so they would remember His words when that time came and be able to endure the trial. However, the Lord did not tell them these things from the beginning. Now that the time had come for them to bear these words, the Lord prepared the disciples by telling them what they would face.

The Lord who permits only trials we can bear, secondly, sends a helper when the disciples find it difficult to endure. Verse 6 shows that the disciples' hearts were filled with grief after hearing Jesus' words. Jesus said He was leaving them. And the thought that they would remain without Jesus, possibly facing expulsion and death from the world, must have filled them with sorrow. But Jesus says in verse 7, "But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you." Despite all the persecution and hardship they would face, Jesus said that His departure would benefit them. This is because the coming of the Advocate would bring greater benefit than Jesus' presence, even surpassing the expulsion and martyrdom they would face. Today's passage tells us that the Advocate will do two things. First, He will convict the world. Verse 8 says, "When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment." When the world hates and persecutes the disciples who bear Jesus' name, the Advocate will convict the world. Second, He will guide the disciples. Verse 13 says, "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come." The helper for the disciples is called the Spirit of truth. Verse 12 tells us that the disciples could not yet bear all that Jesus had to tell them. When they found it difficult to carry out Jesus' mission, Jesus promised them the Spirit of truth. The Spirit of truth would guide them into all truth. Just as Jesus did not speak His own words but delivered God's words, the Spirit of truth would not speak on His own but only what He hears. Just as Jesus was now telling them about future events, the Spirit of truth would also tell them what is yet to come. Even though Jesus would leave them, He would send the Spirit of truth to help them endure these trials.

To conclude, Jesus permitted His disciples only trials they could bear. Jesus first prepared them by telling them in advance what they would face. He said that when they encountered persecution and hardship from the world, they would remember what He had told them, preventing them from falling away. Also, when they were filled with sorrow, Jesus comforted them and promised the Advocate when they couldn't yet bear everything. When the Spirit of truth comes, they would be guided into all truth and learn about what is to come. Thus, while Jesus permitted trials for His disciples, He also prepared them in advance and provided a helper. This enabled them to endure. The Lord who permitted only bearable trials to His disciples—Lord, please permit only bearable trials to us as well. Let us pray together.
