16:16 조금 있으면 너희가 나를 보지 못하겠고 또 조금 있으면 나를 보리라 하시니

17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
16:19 예수께서 그 묻고자 함을 아시고 이르시되 내 말이 조금 있으면 나를 보지 못하겠고 또 조금 있으면 나를 보리라 하므로 서로 문의하느냐
16:20 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희는 곡하고 애통하겠으나 세상은 기뻐하리라 너희는 근심하겠으나 너희 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 되리라
16:21 여자가 해산하게 되면 그 때가 이르렀으므로 근심하나 아이를 낳으면 세상에 사람 난 기쁨으로 말미암아 그 고통을 다시 기억하지 아니하느니라

19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
아내가 저희 둘째를 임신했을 때였습니다. 병원에서 둘째가 생긴 것을 확인하고 아마 두번째 진찰이었던 것 같습니다. 고위험임신으로 판명이나서 이대로라면 아이를 잃을수도 있다는 말을 들었습니다. 임신한지 3개월만에 의사로부터 절대안정을 취해야 하고 침대를 벗어나면 안된다는 지시를 받았습니다. 한국에 계신 장모님께서 보스턴까지 날아오셔서 방문비자가 허락하는 6개월 동안 저희를 보살펴주셨습니다. 많은 사람들의 정성 덕분이었는지 둘째는 중간에 유산되지 않고 다행히 미숙아로 5주 일찍 세상에 나왔습니다. 아이가 너무 작아 신생아 집중치료실에서 일주일을 보냈어야만 했지요. 하지만 저희는 둘째가 세상에 나오는 순간 그동안 고생했던 일들과 모든 근심, 걱정들이 다 사라지는 것을 느꼈습니다. 비록 아이가 신생아 집중치료실에 있더라도 아이를 임신중에 잃지 않았다는 것만으로도 너무나 감사했습니다. 지금도 아내와 저는 둘째를 보면서 가끔 그 때의 이야기를 하곤 합니다. 둘째가 있어서 너무 다행이다 그때 아이를 잃었으면 어떡할 뻔 했나 라는 말을 하곤 하지요. 오늘 본문에서 예수님께서도 근심하는 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “여자가 해산하게 되면 그때가 이르렀으므로 근심하나 아기를 낳으면 세상에 사람 난 기쁨으로 말미암아 그 고통을 다시 기억하지 아니하느니라”(v21) 그러면서 예수님이 떠나시는 것 때문에 근심하는 제자들에게 그들의 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 되리라 (v.20) 라는 말씀을 하십니다. 그들은 예수님이 떠나시는 것 때문에 근심하였지만 그들이 알지 못했던 비밀은 그들의 근심이 예수님의 십자가 부활로 그들에게 기쁨이 되는 것이었습니다. 오늘은 “너희 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 되리라” 라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하기 원합니다.
When my wife was pregnant with our second child, it was probably during the second check-up at the hospital after confirming the pregnancy. It was diagnosed as a high-risk pregnancy, and we were told that we might lose the child if things continued as they were. Three months into the pregnancy, the doctor instructed my wife to take absolute bed rest and not to leave the bed. My mother-in-law flew from Korea to Boston and took care of us for six months, as long as her visitor visa allowed. Perhaps due to the dedication of many people, our second child was not miscarried but fortunately came into the world 5 weeks early as a premature baby. The baby was so small that he had to spend a week in the neonatal intensive care unit. But the moment our second child came into the world, we felt all the hardships, worries, and anxieties disappear. Even though the child was in the NICU, we were so grateful just for not having lost the baby during pregnancy. Even now, my wife and I occasionally talk about that time as we look at our second child. We say how fortunate we are to have our second child and wonder what would have happened if we had lost the baby. In today's passage, Jesus says to his anxious disciples: "A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world." (v21) Then Jesus tells the disciples, who are worried about his departure, that their grief will turn to joy (v.20). They were grieving because Jesus was leaving, but the secret they didn't know was that their grief would turn to joy through Jesus' cross and resurrection. Today, I want to preach on the title, "Your Sorrow Will Turn to Joy."
어제까지의 말씀에서 예수님께서는 세상이 이들을 예수님 때문에 미워할 것을 말씀하셨습니다. 그러나 그들이 실족하지 않도록 그들이 당할 일을 미리 알려주시고 또 그들을 도와주실 진리의 성령 또한 약속 하셨습니다. 그리고 오늘 말씀에서 다시금 본론으로 돌아가십니다. 16절입니다. “조금 있으면 너희가 나를 보지 못하겠고 또 조금 있으면 나를 보리라 하시니” 예수님께서 제자들을 떠나신다는 말씀을 다시 하십니다. 이 말씀을 하시는 것은 이번이 처음이 아닙니다. 그 중에서도 특별히, 이들과 조금 더 있다가 떠나신다, 잠시만 너희와 함께 더 있겠다고 말씀하신 것 조차도 7:33, 12:35, 13:33, 14:19등 여러번 말씀하시지요. 그런데 오늘 말씀을 보면 제자들은 이렇게 여러번 들었던 말씀임에도 불구하고 이 말씀이 무슨 말씀인지 전혀 이해하지 못하는 모습을 보입니다. 17절과 18절 말씀을 보면 제자들이 이해하지 못하는 것이 총 네가지인 것을 알 수 있습니다. 첫째는 “조금 있으면 나를 보지 못하겠고” 가 무슨 뜻인지? 두번째는 이번에는 “조금 있으면 나를 보리라”는 말씀은 또 무슨 뜻인지? 셋째는 “내가 아버지께로 감이라” 하신것이 무슨 뜻인지? 넷째로 그렇다면 계속 반복되는 “조금 있으면”이라는 말씀이 대체 무엇을 말씀하고 계신 건지 이들은 이해하지 못하고 있는 것이지요. 이 말은 제자들이 아직까지도 예수님의 십자가에 대한 이해가 전혀 없었다는 것을 보여줍니다. 조금 있으면 나를 보지 못하겠다는 말씀은 예수님께서 붙잡히셔서 십자가에 달려 돌아가심을 말씀하시는 것이고. 또 조금 있으면 나를 보리라 하신 것은 부활 하신 예수님께서 이들을 다시 만나는 것을 말씀하고 계신 것이고. 또 내가 아버지께로 감이라 하신것은 예수님의 승천을 말씀하시는 것이고. 조금 있으면 이라는 말씀은 이 말씀을 하신 것이 잡히시기 전날 밤이기에 곧 일어날 일이라는 것을 말하고 계신 것이지요. 이 요한복음을 읽었을 당시의 독자들과 지금 2000년 뒤에 요한복음을 읽는 우리들은 예수님께서 무슨 말씀을 하고 계시는지 전지적 독자 시점에서 이해할 수 있지만 아직 예수님의 십자가를 경험하지 못한 요한복음 안의 제자들은 이 말씀을 이해하기가 어려웠을 것입니다. 그들에게 십자가는 이들이 상상조차 할 수 없는 것이었지요. 그렇기에 이들은 이해할 수 없는 예수님의 말씀에 고민하고 근심하고 걱정 할 수 밖에 없는 것입니다.
In yesterday's message, Jesus said that the world would hate them because of Him. However, He told them in advance what they would face so that they would not fall away, and He also promised the Spirit of truth who would help them. And in today's passage, He returns to the main point. Verse 16: "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." Jesus again tells the disciples that He is leaving them. This is not the first time He has said this. Especially, He has said several times that He would be with them a little longer and then leave, in 7:33, 12:35, 13:33, 14:19, and so on. But in today's passage, we see that despite having heard this message several times, the disciples do not understand what it means at all. Looking at verses 17 and 18, we can see that there are four things the disciples don't understand. First, what does "In a little while you will see me no more" mean? Second, what does "and then after a little while you will see me" mean? Third, what does "I am going to the Father" mean? Fourth, what does the repeated phrase "a little while" actually mean? This shows that the disciples still had no understanding of Jesus' cross. "In a little while you will see me no more" refers to Jesus being arrested and dying on the cross. "After a little while you will see me" refers to the risen Jesus meeting them again. "I am going to the Father" refers to Jesus' ascension. And "a little while" indicates that these events would happen soon, as He was speaking the night before His arrest. While readers of John's Gospel at that time and we who read it 2,000 years later can understand what Jesus was talking about from an omniscient reader's perspective, the disciples in John's Gospel, who had not yet experienced Jesus' cross, would have found these words difficult to understand. For them, the cross was something they couldn't even imagine. Therefore, they could only worry and be anxious about Jesus' incomprehensible words.
그 모습을 보다 못한 예수님께서 직접 말씀을 해석하여 주십니다. 20절입니다. “너희는 곡하고 애통하겠으나 세상은 기뻐하리라. 너희는 근심하겠으나 너희 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 되리라.” 아마 모르긴 몰라도 이 말씀을 들었던 제자들은 충격을 받았을 것 같습니다. 우리는 곡하고 애통하겠으나 세상은 기뻐하다니 이게 무슨 말씀이신가? 아마도 더 혼란스러워졌을지도 모르겠습니다. 그러나 예수님의 촛점은 그들의 근심, 그들의 고통이 도리어 기쁨이 되는 것에 있었습니다. 21절 입니다. “여자가 해산하게 되면 그때가 이르렀으므로 근심하나” 무엇때문에 근심합니까? 고통때문이지요. 그러나 “아기를 낳으면 세상에 사람 난 기쁨으로 말미암아그 고통을 다시 기억하지 아니하느니라” 이 말씀은 여러가지 메세지를 담고 있습니다. 첫째는 오늘 말씀에서 제가 전하고자 하는 것처럼 그들의 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 될 것이라는 것입니다. 그리고 그 기쁨이 너무 커서 예전의 근심과 고통은 다시 기억하지 아니할 것이라고 말씀하십니다. 둘째는 그들이 애통하고 세상이 기뻐하는 것처럼. 또 여자가 해산하게 되면 필연적으로 고통이 따르는 것처럼 이들의 근심이 기쁨이 되는 과정에 고통이 반드시 수반된다는 것입니다. 그리고 셋째는 이 해산하는 여인의 비유가 바로 창세기에서 ‘여자가 해산한 아이가 원수의 머리를 상하게 할 것’이라는 예언과 맞닿아 있는 것입니다. 여자가 해산할 아이가 바로 예수님이십니다. 예수님께서 십자가에 돌아가심으로 제자들은 곡하고 애통하겠으나 세상은 기뻐할 것입니다. 그러나 예수님께서 부활하심으로 그들의 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 될 것입니다. 우리의 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 되는 과정에 필연적인 고통, 죽음을 예수님께서 십자가에서 우리를 대신하여 치루셨습니다. 그리하여 이제는 누구도 그들에게서 영생의 기쁨을 빼앗아갈 자가 없습니다. 22절입니다. “지금은 너희가 근심하나 내가 다시 너희를 보리니 너희 마음이 기쁠 것이요 너희 기쁨을 빼앗을 자가 없으리라”
Seeing their confusion, Jesus directly interprets His words for them. Verse 20: "Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy." The disciples who heard these words were probably shocked. "We will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice? What does this mean?" They might have become even more confused. But Jesus' focus was on how their grief, their pain, would turn to joy. Verse 21: "A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come." Why does she grieve? Because of the pain. But "when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world." This verse contains several messages. First, as I want to convey in today's message, their grief will turn to joy. And that joy will be so great that they will no longer remember their former grief and pain. Second, just as they will mourn while the world rejoices, and just as a woman in labor inevitably experiences pain, pain necessarily accompanies the process of their grief turning to joy. And third, this metaphor of a woman in labor connects to the prophecy in Genesis that "the offspring of the woman will crush the head of the enemy." Jesus is that offspring of the woman. Through Jesus' death on the cross, the disciples will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. But through Jesus' resurrection, their grief will turn to joy. Jesus bore on the cross the inevitable pain and death in the process of our grief turning to joy. Therefore, now no one can take away the joy of eternal life from them. Verse 22: "So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy."
말씀을 맺습니다. 제자들은 예수님이 말씀하시는 것을 이해할 수 없었습니다. 그들은 예수님께서 떠나신다는 이해할 수 없는 지금의 상황과 또 예수님의 알아들을 수 없는 말씀 아래 근심하였습니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 그들에게 그들의 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 되리라고 말씀하십니다. 그들은 알지 못했지만 예수님께서는 당신의 십자가를 말씀하고 계셨습니다. 그들의 근심이 예수님의 십자가를 통하여 기쁨이 될 것을 말씀하고 계셨습니다. 그리고 그 부활의 기쁨이 그들에게 주어질 때에 이제는 그들의 기쁨을 빼앗을 자가 없다고 하십니다. 우리에게도 이 부활의 기쁨이 주어졌습니다. 때로 하나님께서 우리가 이해할 수 없는 상황을 허락하실 때 우리는 근심하게 되지만 우리가 신뢰할 수 있는 것은 예수님의 십자가 입니다. 우리에게 주어진 예수 십자가의 대속과 부활의 기쁨은 그 누구도 빼앗을 수 없습니다. 기도하시겠습니다.
To conclude, the disciples couldn't understand what Jesus was saying. They grieved under the incomprehensible situation of Jesus' departure and His words that they couldn't understand. But Jesus tells them that their grief will turn to joy. Though they didn't know it, Jesus was talking about His cross. He was saying that their grief would turn to joy through His cross. And when the joy of resurrection is given to them, no one will be able to take away their joy. This joy of resurrection has been given to us as well. Sometimes when God allows situations we cannot understand, we grieve, but what we can trust is Jesus' cross. The atonement of Jesus' cross and the joy of resurrection given to us cannot be taken away by anyone. Let us pray.
