20250311 [새벽묵상] 예수님은 진정 부활하셨습니다 | Yes, Jesus truly rose from the dead (요/Jhn 20:1~10)

1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) 10 Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

When I was in the military, I read a book called "How to Talk to Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere" by Larry King. Larry King was one of the greatest talk show hosts who worked at CNN. He interviewed so many presidents and celebrities that he was considered America's representative interviewer. When asked to choose just one historical figure he would like to interview, he said without hesitation that he would like to interview Jesus. And for good reason—if Jesus truly resurrected, all the values and common sense we know in this world would be turned upside down. If Jesus really rose from the dead, we should no longer live for the values of this world but for the eternal kingdom of God. And today's passage tells us that Jesus truly resurrected. Yes, Jesus truly rose from the dead. I want to deliver a message with this title today.

The passage reveals that Jesus truly resurrected through witnesses. The first witness is Mary Magdalene. Verse 1 says, "Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance." It actually doesn't make sense that John records Mary Magdalene as the first witness, because in Jewish society at that time, women's testimonies were not recognized as valid. If John had fabricated Jesus's resurrection, there would be no reason to write that Mary Magdalene was the first witness. It would have been much more convincing to write that Peter, the chief disciple, was the first to witness Jesus's resurrection. The very fact that Mary Magdalene is recorded as the first witness proves that this actually happened and was recorded as it occurred. And not just in John's Gospel—all the Gospels record Mary Magdalene as the first witness of the resurrection.

So why did Mary Magdalene go to the tomb early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark? In fact, according to other Gospels, Mary Magdalene was not alone but accompanied by other women. That's why in verse 2, Mary tells Peter and the other disciple, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and 'we' don't know where they have put him." These women were on their way to the tomb with spices to finish preparing Jesus's body. If you remember yesterday's message, Jesus died the day before the Sabbath, so they prepared his body with spices and linen according to Jewish burial customs, but they couldn't finish because the Sabbath was quickly approaching. So these women were on their way to the tomb as soon as the Sabbath ended, early in the morning, to finish preparing Jesus's body. They had not even thought about Jesus's resurrection. That's why, when they saw the opened tomb, verse 2 says they ran to Peter and the other disciple, doesn't it? They ran in such a hurry because they thought someone had stolen Jesus's body. To them, Jesus's resurrection was impossible. If someone were making up Jesus's resurrection, who would write it this way? They should have written, "When they saw the opened tomb, they said, 'Oh, the Lord has risen as he said! Praise him!'" But the fact that they couldn't even consider the possibility of resurrection actually proves that Jesus's resurrection was real.

The same goes for Peter and the other disciple. When they heard the news, verse 4 says, "Both were running," but as it happens, the other disciple arrived at the tomb first. Wouldn't it have been better for Peter's reputation if he, the chief disciple, had arrived first? If someone were making this up, that's how they would have written it. But that's not what's written. Moreover, although the other disciple arrived first, he didn't enter first. He let Peter enter first. This kind of detail could only be written by an eyewitness. Now, there is a repeated phrase in verses 5 and 6. What is it? "He saw the strips of linen lying there" and "the linen lying there." The fact that the linen was lying there is crucial evidence. If grave robbers had come and stolen Jesus's body, they would have taken the body wrapped in linen as it was. Perhaps the cloth that had been wrapped around his head might have fallen to the ground as they hurriedly moved the body. There would be no reason to unwrap the linen from the body just to take the body alone, would there? In other words, the linen lying there means that no one moved Jesus's body. And as I just mentioned, verse 7 says the cloth that had been around Jesus's head was "folded up by itself, separate from the linen." In other words, it was neatly folded. Someone had folded the cloth. So the linen and the cloth prove that Jesus's body was not stolen. Then what happened? That's right. Jesus resurrected. He truly came back to life.

Verse 8 says that "finally," the other disciple also went inside, saw, and believed. This other disciple entered Jesus's tomb and saw all this evidence firsthand. And only then did he believe in the one event that all the evidence pointed to—Jesus's resurrection. Verse 9 kindly informs us of their state of mind: "They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead." Even Peter, Jesus's chief disciple, did not understand the Scripture's message of resurrection. As I mentioned above, this actually helps us know that Jesus's resurrection was real. After witnessing Jesus's empty tomb, these two disciples returned to their homes. Here we can see that these two disciples fulfilled the condition of witnesses required by the law—that is, the testimony of two or more people. Today's passage tells us that Jesus's resurrection is an actual event with two witnesses and physical evidence.

I conclude my message. Jesus truly resurrected. The evidence and witnesses in today's passage prove to us that this actually happened. As verse 9 tells us, the disciples and women in today's passage did not yet understand the Scripture's message about resurrection. So they could only believe after they entered the tomb and saw with their own eyes. But we have already been given the Scripture's message of resurrection. And through this word, God is showing us that Jesus's resurrection truly happened. If Jesus really rose from the dead, then we have hope, because just as Jesus died on the cross for us and rose again, we too will rise with Jesus and inherit the eternal kingdom of God. I want us to approach God at this moment with that hope. Let us pray together.
