1 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
21:4 날이 새어갈 때에 예수께서 바닷가에 서셨으나 제자들이 예수신 줄 알지 못하는지라
4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
21:5 예수께서 이르시되 얘들아 너희에게 고기가 있느냐 대답하되 없나이다
5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”
“No,” they answered.
21:6 이르시되 그물을 배 오른편에 던지라 그리하면 잡으리라 하시니 이에 던졌더니 고기가 많아 그물을 들 수 없더라
6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
21:7 예수의 사랑하시는 그 제자가 베드로에게 이르되 주님이시라 하니 시몬 베드로가 벗고 있다가 주님이라 하는 말을 듣고 겉옷을 두른 후에 바다로 뛰어 내리더라
21:8 다른 제자들은 육지에서 거리가 불과 한 오십 칸쯤 되므로 작은 배를 타고 물고기 든 그물을 끌고 와서
21:9 육지에 올라 보니 숯불이 있는데 그 위에 생선이 놓였고 떡도 있더라
7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.
21:10 예수께서 이르시되 지금 잡은 생선을 좀 가져오라 하시니
21:11 시몬 베드로가 올라가서 그물을 육지에 끌어 올리니 가득히 찬 큰 고기가 백쉰세 마리라 이같이 많으나 그물이 찢어지지 아니하였더라
21:12 예수께서 이르시되 와서 조반을 먹으라 하시니 제자들이 주님이신 줄 아는 고로 당신이 누구냐 감히 묻는 자가 없더라
21:13 예수께서 가셔서 떡을 가져다가 그들에게 주시고 생선도 그와 같이 하시니라
21:14 이것은 예수께서 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나신 후에 세 번째로 제자들에게 나타나신 것이라
10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
오늘 말씀은 예수님이 부활하신 후 세 번째로 제자들 앞에 나타나신 사건입니다. 친절하게도 사도 요한께서 14절에 설명하고 있습니다. 예수님이 여러번 제자들 앞에 부활하신 모습을 나타내셨습니다. 그럼에도 제자들은 예수님을 만나기 이전 어부의 삶으로 돌아가 있습니다. 왜 이들은 죽음을 이기시고 부활하신 주님을 보고도 다시 예전의 모습으로 돌아갔을까요? 오늘 새벽 제자들을 찾아오신 예수님의 다정함을 함께 살펴보며 은혜 나누기를 원합니다.
Today's message is about the third time Jesus appeared to His disciples after His resurrection. The Apostle John kindly explains this in verse 14. Jesus repeatedly appeared to His disciples after His resurrection. Yet, despite witnessing the risen Lord, the disciples returned to their former lives as fishermen. Why did they go back to their old ways even after seeing the Lord who conquered death? This morning, we will reflect on Jesus’ kindness as He visits His disciples and share in the grace of this moment.
먼저 1절에 나온 디베랴 호수는 다른 명칭으로 갈릴리 바다입니다. 제자들이 예수님 부활 후 갈바를 알지 못하여 예루살렘을 떠나 흩어졌고 몇 명의 제자들이 갈릴리 호수에서 만났습니다. 그리고 2절에서 그 자리에 함께있던 제자들을 알려주고 있죠. “시몬 베드로와 디두모라 하는 도마와 갈릴리 가나 사람 나다나엘과 세베대의 아들들과 또 다른 제자 둘이 함께 있더니.” 총 7명이라 나오죠. 베드로, 도마, 나다나엘, 야고보와 요한, 그리고 이름 모를 두 명의 제자. 이 두 명의 제자들은 과연 누구일까? 많은 이들이 첫 번째는 베드로의 형제인 안드레로 봅니다. 베드로와 형제이니 고향으로 돌아갈 때 함께 갔겠죠. 그리고 마지막 일곱 번째 제자는 빌립으로 봅니다. 그 이유는 빌립 또한 베드로와 같은 동네 출신이기 때문입니다. “빌립은 안드레와 베드로와 한 동네 벳새다 사람이라 (요한복음 2:44).”
자 이렇게 같은 동네 혹은 갈릴리 호수 근처 옆동네 사는 제자 7명들이 한 자리에 모여있다가 베드로가 말합니다. 3절에 “나는 물고기 잡으러 가노라”하니 다른 제자들도 다 따라 나섭니다. 그러나 밤새 한 마리도 잡지 못합니다. 이른 아침이 될 때까지 한 마리도 못잡고 있을 때 바닷가에서 예수님이 나타나서 한 말씀 하십니다. 5절에 “예수께서 이르시되 얘들아 너희에게 고기가 있느냐 대답하되 없나이다.” 모든 것을 아시는 만물을 지으신 예수님께서 이들에게 조언을 주어 그물을 배 오른편에 던지라하여 그렇게 했더니 물고기가 많아 그물을 들 수 없을 정도로 많이 잡게 됩니다.
First, in verse 1, the Sea of Tiberias is another name for the Sea of Galilee. After Jesus' resurrection, the disciples, unsure of what to do next, scattered and left Jerusalem. Some of them gathered at the Sea of Galilee. Verse 2 tells us who was present: "Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together." A total of seven are mentioned: Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, James, and John, along with two unnamed disciples. Who were these two? Many believe the first was Andrew, Peter’s brother, as it would make sense for them to return home together. The seventh disciple is often thought to be Philip, as he was from the same town as Peter: "Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida" (John 1:44).
These seven disciples, either from the same town or nearby, were gathered when Peter said, "I'm going out to fish," and the others followed (verse 3). However, they fished all night and caught nothing. At dawn, Jesus appeared on the shore and asked, "Friends, haven’t you any fish?" (verse 5). They answered, "No." Though Jesus, the Creator who knows all things, already knew this, He gave them advice: "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they obeyed, they caught so many fish that they could not haul in the net.
이 장면은 우리에게 예수님이 첫 제자들을 부를 때의 장면을 떠오르게 합니다. 누가복음에서 자세히 살펴볼 수 있는데요. 어부였던 베드로에게 예수님께서 처음 제자로 부르며 “사람을 낚는 어부”로서의 사명을 줬던 장면입니다. 이 때도 베드로와 안드레, 야고보와 요한은 밤새 낚시질을 했지만 한 마리도 잡지 못했었죠. 그 때 예수님이 그물을 정리하는 제자들에게 나타나 깊은 데로 가서 그물을 내리라고 명령했습니다. 한 평생을 어부로 살아온 베드로에게 자칫 자존심이 상할 수도 있었을 명령인데 베드로는 “말씀에 의지하여 내가 그물을 내리리이다”라고 고백하며 순종했습니다. 그리하여 엄청난 양의 물고기를 잡는 이적을 경험하고 본인을 죄인이라 고백했던 것으로 예수님을 따르기 시작했었죠.
다시 오늘 본문으로 돌아와서, 지금 제자들은 그 어떤 기적과도는 비교과 되지 않는 죽은 자가 다시 살아난 기적을 경험했습니다. 그리고 부활한 예수님과 대화하고 교제하며 참으로 기뻐하며 안도감을 누렸었습니다. 이랬으면 더욱 힘차게 떵떵거리며 “예수님이 부활하셨다!” 선포하고 예루살렘 지역을 휘젓고 다녔을 법도 한데 제자들은 그러지 않았습니다. 아니 못했다고 하는게 맞을까요. 이들을 발목잡는 것이 무엇이었을까요? 죄책감이 아니었을까요?
This scene reminds us of when Jesus first called His disciples. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus called Peter to be a "fisher of men." At that time, Peter, Andrew, James, and John had also fished all night without success. Jesus told them to put out into deep water and let down their nets. For a lifetime fisherman like Peter, this could have been an insult to his pride. However, Peter responded, "Because You say so, I will let down the nets," and obeyed. They caught an overwhelming number of fish, and Peter, realizing his sinfulness, confessed himself as unworthy, leading him to follow Jesus.
Now, back in today’s passage, the disciples had experienced an even greater miracle—the resurrection of Jesus. They had spoken with Him and rejoiced in His presence. One would think they would be boldly proclaiming, "Jesus is risen!" and spreading the news throughout Jerusalem. But instead, they withdrew. What held them back?
Could it have been guilt?
열 두 제자 중에 수제자였던 베드로가 했던 고백, “모두 주를 버릴지라도 나는 결코 버리지 않겠나이다” (마 26:33)가 무색하게도 베드로는 3번이나 주님을 부정했지요. 또, “주는 그리스도시요 살아 계신 하나님의 아들이시니이다 (마 16:16)”의 고백에도 불구하고 예수님께서 십자가에 돌아가신 후에는 게 눈 감추듯 도망가고 없었습니다. 다른 제자들도 마찬가지였죠. 얼마나 많은 후회와 죄책감에 시달렸을까요? ‘내가 정말 예수님을 사랑하는 게 맞았을까? 나 같은 배신자가 뭔 낯짝으로 예수님을 볼까?’ 스스로를 계속 자책하며 그가 선택한 것은 조용히 다시 고향으로 돌아가 원래하던 어부의 일을 하는 것 이었습니다. 베드로가 그 사이에 회개하지 않았을까요? 저는 회개했다고 봅니다. 그런데 왜 이렇게 소극적으로 바꼈을까? 사탄의 속삭임 때문이 아닐까요? ‘예수님이 너를 정말 용서하실꺼라 생각해?’ 이 모든 것을 아시는 예수님께서 과거 첫 만남 때의 장면을 그대로 가져와 베드로를 다시 한번 부르십니다.
Peter, who once declared, "Even if all fall away on account of You, I never will!" (Matthew 26:33), denied Jesus three times. Despite his confession, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16), he fled when Jesus was crucified. The other disciples also deserted Him. They must have been tormented by regret and guilt. "Did I truly love Jesus? How can a betrayer like me face Him?" In self-reproach, Peter chose to quietly return to his former life as a fisherman.
Did Peter repent during this time? I believe he did. But why was he still so withdrawn? Perhaps Satan whispered, "Do you really think Jesus has forgiven you?" Jesus, knowing everything, recreated their first meeting, calling Peter once again.
7절에서 예수께서 사랑하시는 그 제자, 요한이 베드로에게 주님이시라 하자마자 베드로는 바다로 뛰어듭니다. 그리고 육지에 올라와보니 숯불 위에 생선과 떡으로 주님이 준비해주신 아침상이 기다리고 있었습니다. 숯불의 냄새를 맡으니 예수님께서 붙잡혀서 심문을 받던 저녁, 베드로가 예수님을 세 번 부인한 그 날 저녁의 기억이 다시 떠오릅니다. 예수님께서 왜 이렇게 하시는 것일까요? 바로 내일 본문을 보면 알 수 있는데요. 예수님께서는 베드로를 처음 만났을 때의 기억 그리고 베드로가 배신하던 기억을 모두 다시 불러일으키고는 베드로에게 세 번 똑같이 묻습니다. “시몬아 네가 나를 사랑하느냐.” 세 번의 배신, 그리고 세 번의 사랑 고백. 베드로가 스스로에게 묻고 또 물었을 그 질문, ‘내가 예수님을 정말 사랑하였는가?’에 대한 회의와 죄책감에서 만회할 기회를 세 번 똑같이 주십니다. 그리고는 17절에 “내 양을 먹이라”라는 새로운 사명을 주시며 다시한번 사람을 낚는 어부에서 목자로 부르십니다.
In verse 7, when John realizes it is Jesus, Peter immediately jumps into the water to reach Him. Upon arriving on shore, he finds a charcoal fire with fish and bread prepared by Jesus. The smell of the fire would have reminded Peter of the night he denied Jesus three times while warming himself by a fire. Why did Jesus do this? The answer is in the following passage, where Jesus asks Peter three times, "Do you love Me?" Just as Peter had denied Him three times, Jesus gave him three opportunities to reaffirm his love. Jesus was restoring Peter, not condemning him. Finally, He entrusted Peter with a new mission: "Feed My sheep."
여러분 제가 신앙생활을 해보니까 깨달은 것이 있습니다. 신앙생활은 다른게 아니라 예수님 안에 거하는 싸움인 것 같습니다. 다른 말로 하자면 ‘자리 지키기’ 싸움입니다. 예수님은 변하지 않습니다. 한결같으시고 신실하시고 언제나 우리와 함께하신다고 약속하셨어요. 오늘 본문처럼 끝까지 찾아오셔서 길 잃은 양을 거두십니다. 그러나 문제는 우리 자신입니다. 우리 스스로가 오해하고 실망하고 오르락 내리락 정신없이 왔다 갔다 합니다. 무엇보다 오늘 베드로처럼 죄에 대한 죄책감이 크죠. 회개는 했는데 내가 아직 그 죄를 기억합니다. 그러니 주님이 주신 약속, “만일 우리가 우리 죄를 자백하면 그는 미쁘시고 의로우사 우리 죄를 사하시며 우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요” (요한일서 1:9) 이 약속의 말씀을 붙잡아야 합니다.
Through my own faith journey, I have realized that Christian life is a battle to remain in Jesus—a struggle to "stay in place." Jesus does not change. He is always faithful, always with us. As we see in today’s passage, He relentlessly seeks out His lost sheep. The problem lies with us. We misunderstand, we waver, we fall into guilt, just like Peter. Yet, we must cling to the promise: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
살면서 이렇게 베드로처럼 우리는 누군가에게 상처를 주고 배신을 하고 거짓말을 할 때가 옵니다. 또 그러한 상처를 받기도 하죠. 이럴 때 좌절하고 실망하여 숨어버리거나 도망치고 싶은 생각이 자연스럽게 듭니다.
그럴 때 오늘 말씀을 기억해서 우리를 찾아오시는 목자 예수님을 기억해야 합니다. 회개해서 돌아와 자리를 지킬 때 우리 위에 큰 용서의 은혜를 부어 주실 줄로 믿습니다. 주변 사람, 생각, 성경을 통해서 우리를 돌아오게 할 모든 셋팅을 준비하실 것입니다. 낙담하여 절망스럽고 주저앉아 일어나실 힘이 없으십니까? 자존심 부릴 필요 없습니다. 베드로처럼 주님이 나타나실 때 바다로 뛰어들 수 있게 주님을 더욱 사랑합시다. 말씀의 은혜를 사모하여 주님의 은혜를 기억합시다.
이 용서의 은혜를 서로에게 나누라고 우리에게 교회 공동체를 보내주신 줄로 믿습니다. 우린 모두 용서받은 죄인들입니다. 그러니 여러분 우리 도망가지도 피하지도 말고 부딪히며 뜨겁게 사랑합시다. 서로의 부족함은 감싸고 이해할 수 있는 주님의 마음을 달라고 함께 기도합시다.
In our lives, just like Peter, there are times when we hurt someone, betray them, or tell a lie. We also sometimes receive such hurt. In these moments, it is natural to feel discouraged, disappointed, and want to hide or run away.
At such times, we must remember today’s message and recall the Shepherd Jesus who comes looking for us. I believe that when we repent, return, and take our place, He will pour out His great grace of forgiveness upon us. He will set everything in motion—through the people around us, our thoughts, and the Scriptures—to bring us back.
Are you feeling dejected, in despair, and without the strength to rise? There is no need to let your pride get in the way. Let us love the Lord even more so that, like Peter, when the Lord appears, we can jump into the water to meet Him. Let us long for the grace of His Word and remember His grace.
I believe that God has given us the church community so that we can share this grace of forgiveness with one another. We are all sinners who have been forgiven. Therefore, my friends, let us not run away or hide, but face our struggles and love passionately. Let us pray together that the Lord grants us hearts capable of embracing and understanding one another’s shortcomings.
