20250320 [새벽묵상] 거룩하게 구별하였으니 그들은 내것이 될 것임이니라 | Set Apart As Holy: You Are Mine (민/Num 3:1~13)

1 This is the account of the family of Aaron and Moses at the time the Lord spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai.

2 The names of the sons of Aaron were Nadab the firstborn and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 3 Those were the names of Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests. 4 Nadab and Abihu, however, died before the Lord when they made an offering with unauthorized fire before him in the Desert of Sinai. They had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron.

5 The Lord said to Moses, 6 “Bring the tribe of Levi and present them to Aaron the priest to assist him. 7 They are to perform duties for him and for the whole community at the tent of meeting by doing the work of the tabernacle. 8 They are to take care of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, fulfilling the obligations of the Israelites by doing the work of the tabernacle. 9 Give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to him. 10 Appoint Aaron and his sons to serve as priests; anyone else who approaches the sanctuary is to be put to death.”

11 The Lord also said to Moses, 12 “I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of the first male offspring of every Israelite woman. The Levites are mine, 13 for all the firstborn are mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set apart for myself every firstborn in Israel, whether human or animal. They are to be mine. I am the Lord.”

Good morning, brothers and sisters in Christ. Today we'll be studying a powerful passage from the book of Numbers that teaches us about God's holiness and how He sets people apart for His purposes.

In the wilderness of Sinai, at the Tent of Meeting, God commanded Moses to count all the men of the congregation. Representatives from each tribe came forward to help Moses and Aaron count every man twenty years and older. After counting all the fighting men from each tribe, God instructed them how to arrange their camp, as we discussed yesterday.

Each tribe was to camp under their own standard and family banner, surrounding the Tent of Meeting on all four sides. Even during their march, the four divisions would proceed in order, with the Tent of Meeting positioned at the center. We've seen how the Tent of Meeting was always at the heart of their journey.

Perhaps this is why, after spending chapters 1 and 2 counting warriors and arranging battle formations, the book of Numbers suddenly shifts in today's passage to discuss the duties of the priests and Levites who served in the Tent of Meeting. Chapters 3 and 4 are entirely devoted to just one tribe—the tribe of Levi. This tells us how critically important their work was, as it was what made Israel distinct from all other nations.

In today's passage, God declares, "The Levites are mine." During the Passover, when the firstborn were dying, God set apart Israel's firstborn as holy—and now He's saying that the Levites, who stand in place of those firstborn, belong to Him. Our message today is titled: "Set Apart As Holy: You Are Mine."

First, let's look at those set apart as priests. Verses 1-4 describe the priestly genealogy, which is essentially Aaron's family line. Though verse 1 begins with "These are the descendants of Aaron and Moses," if you read through verse 4, you'll notice Moses' descendants aren't listed. However, since both Moses and Aaron were sons of Amram, son of Kohath, son of Levi, this remains an account of the Levite lineage.

Let's read verse 3 together: "These were the names of Aaron's sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests." Aaron's four sons—Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar—underwent a seven-day ordination ceremony described in Leviticus 8. They were chosen by God, anointed, set apart as holy, and ordained as priests. They belonged to God.

But notice verse 4: "Nadab and Abihu, however, died before the LORD when they made an offering with unauthorized fire before him in the Wilderness of Sinai. They had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron."

This is a sobering verse. It suggests that Eleazar and Ithamar served under their father Aaron's supervision to avoid making similar mistakes. Why did this tragedy occur? In Leviticus 10:3, after this incident, Moses tells the grieving Aaron: "This is what the LORD spoke of when he said: 'Among those who approach me I will be proved holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honored.' Aaron remained silent."

Though we might expect Moses to comfort Aaron after losing two sons, God declares this was about revealing His holiness and displaying His glory before all the people. This demonstrates the gravity of God's holiness. When those set apart as priests failed to uphold God's holiness, God directly manifested His holiness.

Second, let's examine the Levites who were set apart. The Levites assisted the priests in the Tabernacle. Their duties are clearly outlined in verses 7 and 8 of our passage. They had three main responsibilities: first, to assist Aaron and the priests in their duties; second, to help the congregation when they came to offer sacrifices, guiding them on proper Tabernacle protocols; and third, to care for and maintain all the Tabernacle furnishings.

Though not priests themselves, the Levites were assigned these special duties. They had unrestricted access to the Tabernacle for their service, while non-Levites were forbidden from entering except to offer sacrifices or gifts. Verse 10 warns, "anyone else who approaches the sanctuary is to be put to death."

What does this tell us? Both priests and Levites were set apart as holy. Because God's holy presence dwelled in the Tabernacle, those who served there needed to be holy too. Just as unholy priests faced death, so would unholy outsiders who entered the sacred space.

Verses 12-13 explain why the Levites were set apart. Verse 12 states they took the place of all firstborn Israelites, and therefore belonged to God. Let's read verse 13 together: "For all the firstborn are mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set apart for myself every firstborn in Israel, whether human or animal. They are to be mine. I am the LORD."

God reveals why the firstborn belong to Him, emphasizing this with His divine name. The Israelites would have vividly remembered Passover—when the blood of lambs on their doorposts saved their firstborn from death as God "passed over" their homes. For them, this was recent history; those spared children might have been playing nearby as these words were spoken. God declares that those children—set apart and saved by Him—belong to Him, and the Levites would now serve in their place.

In conclusion, today's message is about people set apart as holy by God. In our previous studies, we've seen how Israel was distinguished from other nations by living with God's Tabernacle at their center. Today, God spoke about priests who were anointed and set apart as holy, and about Levites who stood in place of the firstborn who were set apart during Passover. God claimed them as His own with the solemn declaration of His name.

Dear friends, we too have been set apart as holy through the blood of Jesus, God's Lamb, in our own Passover. Therefore, we belong to God. This isn't because of our abilities or qualities, but because Jesus has made us holy through His blood. He has called us to be His own despite our unworthiness.

As you go forth this week, remember that you have been set apart as God's possession. May you live a life that reflects this holy calling.

Let us pray...
