4:3 곧 삼십 세 이상으로 오십 세까지 회막의 일을 하기 위하여 그 역사에 참가할 만한 모든 자를 계수하라
1 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 2 “Take a census of the Kohathite branch of the Levites by their clans and families. 3 Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting.
4:4 고핫 자손이 회막 안의 지성물에 대하여 할 일은 이러하니라
4:5 진영이 전진할 때에 아론과 그의 아들들이 들어가서 칸 막는 휘장을 걷어 증거궤를 덮고
4:6 그 위를 해달의 가죽으로 덮고 그 위에 순청색 보자기를 덮은 후에 그 채를 꿰고
4 “This is the work of the Kohathites at the tent of meeting: the care of the most holy things. 5 When the camp is to move, Aaron and his sons are to go in and take down the shielding curtain and put it over the ark of the covenant law. 6 Then they are to cover the curtain with a durable leather, spread a cloth of solid blue over that and put the poles in place.
4:7 진설병의 상에 청색 보자기를 펴고 대접들과 숟가락들과 주발들과 붓는 잔들을 그 위에 두고 또 항상 진설하는 떡을 그 위에 두고
4:8 홍색 보자기를 그 위에 펴고 그 것을 해달의 가죽 덮개로 덮은 후에 그 채를 꿰고
7 “Over the table of the Presence they are to spread a blue cloth and put on it the plates, dishes and bowls, and the jars for drink offerings; the bread that is continually there is to remain on it. 8 They are to spread a scarlet cloth over them, cover that with the durable leather and put the poles in place.
4:9 청색 보자기를 취하여 등잔대와 등잔들과 불집게들과 불똥 그릇들과 그 쓰는 바 모든 기름 그릇을 덮고
4:10 등잔대와 그 모든 기구를 해달의 가죽 덮개 안에 넣어 메는 틀 위에 두고
9 “They are to take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand that is for light, together with its lamps, its wick trimmers and trays, and all its jars for the olive oil used to supply it. 10 Then they are to wrap it and all its accessories in a covering of the durable leather and put it on a carrying frame.
4:11 금제단 위에 청색 보자기를 펴고 해달의 가죽 덮개로 덮고 그 채를 꿰고
11 “Over the gold altar they are to spread a blue cloth and cover that with the durable leather and put the poles in place.
4:12 성소에서 봉사하는 데에 쓰는 모든 기구를 취하여 청색 보자기에 싸서 해달의 가죽 덮개로 덮어 메는 틀 위에 두고
12 “They are to take all the articles used for ministering in the sanctuary, wrap them in a blue cloth, cover that with the durable leather and put them on a carrying frame.
4:13 제단의 재를 버리고 그 제단 위에 자색 보자기를 펴고
4:14 봉사하는 데에 쓰는 모든 기구 곧 불 옮기는 그릇들과 고기 갈고리들과 부삽들과 대야들과 제단의 모든 기구를 두고 해달의 가죽 덮개를 그 위에 덮고 그 채를 꿸 것이며
13 “They are to remove the ashes from the bronze altar and spread a purple cloth over it. 14 Then they are to place on it all the utensils used for ministering at the altar, including the firepans, meat forks, shovels and sprinkling bowls. Over it they are to spread a covering of the durable leather and put the poles in place.
4:15 진영을 떠날 때에 아론과 그의 아들들이 성소와 성소의 모든 기구 덮는 일을 마치거든 고핫 자손들이 와서 멜 것이니라 그러나 성물은 만지지 말라 그들이 죽으리라 회막 물건 중에서 이것들은 고핫 자손이 멜 것이며
15 “After Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy furnishings and all the holy articles, and when the camp is ready to move, only then are the Kohathites to come and do the carrying. But they must not touch the holy things or they will die. The Kohathites are to carry those things that are in the tent of meeting.
4:16 제사장 아론의 아들 엘르아살이 맡을 것은 등유와 태우는 향과 항상 드리는 소제물과 관유이며 또 장막 전체와 그 중에 있는 모든 것과 성소와 그 모든 기구니라
16 “Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, is to have charge of the oil for the light, the fragrant incense, the regular grain offering and the anointing oil. He is to be in charge of the entire tabernacle and everything in it, including its holy furnishings and articles.”
4:17 여호와께서 또 모세와 아론에게 말씀하여 이르시되
4:18 너희는 고핫 족속의 지파를 레위인 중에서 끊어지게 하지 말지니
4:19 그들이 지성물에 접근할 때에 그들의 생명을 보존하고 죽지 않게 하기 위하여 이같이 하라 아론과 그의 아들들이 들어가서 각 사람에게 그가 할 일과 그가 멜 것을 지휘하게 할지니라
4:20 그들은 잠시라도 들어가서 성소를 보지 말라 그들이 죽으리라
17 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 18 “See that the Kohathite tribal clans are not destroyed from among the Levites. 19 So that they may live and not die when they come near the most holy things, do this for them: Aaron and his sons are to go into the sanctuary and assign to each man his work and what he is to carry. 20 But the Kohathites must not go in to look at the holy things, even for a moment, or they will die.”
4:21 여호와께서 또 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되
4:22 게르손 자손도 그 조상의 가문과 종족에 따라 계수하되
4:23 삼십 세 이상으로 오십 세까지 회막에서 복무하고 봉사할 모든 자를 계수하라

4:24 게르손 종족의 할 일과 멜 것은 이러하니
4:25 곧 그들을 성막의 휘장들과 회막과 그 덮개와 그 위의 해달의 가죽 덮개와 회막 휘장 문을 메며
4:26 뜰의 휘장과 성막과 제단 사방에 있는 뜰의 휘장 문과 그 줄들과 그것에 사용하는 모든 기구를 메며 이 모든 것을 이렇게 맡아 처리할 것이라
4:27 게르손 자손은 그들의 모든 일 곧 멜 것과 처리할 것을 아론과 그의 아들들의 명령대로 할 것이니 너희는 그들이 멜 짐을 그들에게 맡길 것이니라
4:28 게르손 자손의 종족들이 회막에서 할 일은 이러하며 그들의 직무는 제사장 아론의 아들 이다말이 감독할지니라
24 “This is the service of the Gershonite clans in their carrying and their other work: 25 They are to carry the curtains of the tabernacle, that is, the tent of meeting, its covering and its outer covering of durable leather, the curtains for the entrance to the tent of meeting, 26 the curtains of the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar, the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard, the ropes and all the equipment used in the service of the tent. The Gershonites are to do all that needs to be done with these things. 27 All their service, whether carrying or doing other work, is to be done under the direction of Aaron and his sons. You shall assign to them as their responsibility all they are to carry. 28 This is the service of the Gershonite clans at the tent of meeting. Their duties are to be under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron, the priest.
4:29 너는 므라리 자손도 그 조상의 가문과 종족에 따라 계수하되
4:30 삼십 세부터 오십 세까지 회막에서 복무하고 봉사할 모든 자를 계수하라
4:31 그들이 직무를 따라 회막에서 할 모든 일 곧 그 멜 것은 이러하니 곧 장막의 널판들과 그 띠들과 그 기둥들과 그 받침들과
4:32 뜰 둘레의 기둥들과 그 받침들과 그 말뚝들과 그 줄들과 그 모든 기구들과 그것에 쓰는 모든 것이라 너희는 그들이 맡아 멜 모든 기구의 품목을 지정하라
4:33 이는 제사장 아론의 아들 이다말의 수하에 있을 므라리 자손의 종족들이 그 모든 직무대로 회막에서 행할 일이니라
29 “Count the Merarites by their clans and families. 30 Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting. 31 As part of all their service at the tent, they are to carry the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, posts and bases, 32 as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, ropes, all their equipment and everything related to their use. Assign to each man the specific things he is to carry. 33 This is the service of the Merarite clans as they work at the tent of meeting under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron, the priest.”
교회에서 항상 고민되는 것은 봉사자 수급의 문제입니다. 그리고 봉사자가 있어도 그 봉사팀을 구성하고, 조직하고, 운영하는 것에서 항상 문제들이 발생합니다. 물론 이러한 갈등들은 결국 하나님의 교회를 더욱 단단하게 만드는 촉매제가 됩니다. 그럼에도 우리는 성경에서 하나님과 교회를 섬기는 방법을 배워야 합니다. 우리는 민수기를 통해서 하나님을 어떻게 섬겨야 하는지를 배울 수 있습니다.
One of the constant concerns in the church is the issue of recruiting volunteers. Even when there are volunteers, there are always challenges in organizing, structuring, and managing the volunteer teams. Of course, these conflicts ultimately serve as a catalyst to strengthen God's church. Nevertheless, we must learn from the Bible how to serve God and His church. Through the Book of Numbers, we can learn how we ought to serve God.
첫번째 섬김의 원리는 “현실적으로 섬기라” 입니다(1~14절).
4장은 레위 지파의 계수와 할 일들 각자의 역할을 기록하고 있습니다.
레위는 게르손, 고핫, 므라리 세 아들을 낳았습니다. 그런데 하나님은 둘째 고핫의 자손들에게 가장 핵심적인 성막의 부분인 지성물(4)을 담당 시켰습니다. 아론과 모세 역시도 고핫의 후손입니다.
3장에서 레위 지파를 계수할 때는 생후 일 개월 남자를 계수 했다면, 4장에서는 또 다른 계수 방법인 30~50세 남자를 계수합니다.
여기서 발견할 수 있는 하나님을 섬기는 원리, 방법은 “현실적인 섬김”입니다.
3장의 계수가 대속을 위한 존재론적인 계수였다면, 4장은 사역을 위한 실무적인 계수입니다.
실제로 성막과 제사를 섬기는 일은 “빛 좋은 개살구”입니다. 왜냐하면 노동 중 중노동이기 때문입니다.
거기다 그 일의 중요성과 신중함은 극도로 민감한 사안이었습니다. 자칫 잘못하면 죽을 수 있으니까요.
그러므로 그 일을 감당할 연령은 신중함, 노련함과 체력을 겸비한 30~50세의 연령이었던 것입니다.
성경에서 보면 30은 매우 중요한 의미를 갖습니다. 다윗의 즉위도 30세이고, 예수님의 공생애도 30세부터 시작되었습니다.
그런데 이 성막 봉사의 연령이 민 8:24절에서는 25세로, 대상 23:24절에서는 20세로 조정된 듯 보이지만, 사실은 아닙니다. 그것은 공식적인 성막 업무에 앞선 인턴쉽 과정을 말하는 것입니다.
그러므로 교회의 섬김이나 훈련도 현실적이어야 합니다. 재능, 취미, 실력, 연령, 문화, 언어 등등을 고려하여 적합한 곳에서 섬김을 해야 합니다.
The first principle of service is "Serve Realistically" (Numbers 4:1–14).
Chapter 4 records the census of the Levite tribe and assigns specific tasks to each group. Levi had three sons—Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. However, God entrusted the descendants of Kohath, the second son, with the most sacred elements of the tabernacle (Numbers 4:4). Aaron and Moses were also descendants of Kohath.
In Numbers 3, the census of the Levite tribe counted males from one month old, while in Chapter 4, a different method is used, counting males aged 30 to 50.
From this, we learn a key principle of serving God: "realistic service."
The census in Chapter 3 was existential, related to atonement, while the one in Chapter 4 was practical, related to ministry.
Serving in the tabernacle and handling sacrifices was no easy task—it was intense physical labor. Moreover, the work was extremely sensitive; a mistake could be fatal. Therefore, the designated age for service was 30 to 50, ensuring a balance of maturity, experience, and physical strength.
The number 30 holds great significance in the Bible—David became king at 30, and Jesus began His public ministry at 30.
Though Numbers 8:24 mentions the service age as 25 and 1 Chronicles 23:24 lists it as 20, these were not contradictions but rather references to an internship phase before official tabernacle duties.
Likewise, service and training in the church must be realistic. One's gifts, skills, age, culture, language, and other factors should be considered when assigning roles, ensuring people serve where they are most suited.
두번째 섬김의 원리는 “질서 있게 섬리라” 입니다(15~20절).
고핫 자손이 지성물을 운반하지만, 그것을 포장하는 것은 오직 아론의 아들들만이 할 수 있었습니다.
그 이유는 하나님의 거룩함에 오직 허락된 아론의 후손들(제사장)만 손을 댈 수 있기 때문입니다.
이렇게 고핫 자손이 성물에 손을 못 대게 하는 것은 죽음으로부터 고핫 자손을 보호하시는 하나님의 배려입니다(18).
여기서 섬김에 대해서 배울 수 있는 또 다른 원리는 질서대로 섬기는 것입니다.
내가 하고 싶다고, 내가 좋아한다고, 폼 난다고 할 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 모든 일에는 하나님이 정해주신 경계가 있습니다. 그것을 무시할 때는 하나님을 무시하는 것으로 형벌이 있습니다.
사울이 사무엘을 못 기다리고 직접 제사를 드린 것이 좋은 예입니다.
사무엘은 그런 사울의 행동에 대해서 왕이 망령되이 행하였나이다(삼상 13:13) 말했습니다.
교회에도 각자의 역할과 권한이 있는데, 그것은 목사나 장로가 특별해서가 아니라 하나님의 질서요, 그것에 대한 순종의 문제인 것입니다. 섬김도 마찬가지입니다.
실컷 섬기고 하나님께 인정받지 못한다면 얼마나 슬픈 일입니까? 그러므로 항상 명심해야 합니다. 하나님이 정해 주신 룰에 따라 그 위치를 지키는 것이 진짜 섬김입니다.
동시에 자신의 한계와 능력을 알아야 합니다. 마음과 열정만 앞서다 보면 현실과 동떨어진 섬김과 결정을 할 공산이 큽니다. 말씀을 통해 내 자신을 보고, 말씀을 따라 주어진 위치에서 최선으로 섬깁시다!
The second principle of service is "Serve in Order" (Numbers 4:15–20).
Although the Kohathites were responsible for carrying the most sacred objects, only Aaron’s sons were permitted to cover them.
This restriction existed because only Aaron’s descendants (the priests) were allowed to handle God’s holy objects. By forbidding the Kohathites from touching them, God was actually protecting them from death (Numbers 4:18).
From this, we learn another key principle: serving according to order.
Service is not something we do just because we want to, enjoy it, or find it prestigious. God has set boundaries for every task. Ignoring these boundaries is disregarding God, which leads to consequences.
A prime example is King Saul, who, instead of waiting for Samuel, offered the sacrifice himself. Samuel rebuked him, saying, “You have done a foolish thing” (1 Samuel 13:13).
Likewise, in the church, different roles and authorities exist not because pastors or elders are special, but because this is God’s order, and obedience to it is essential. The same applies to serving.
Imagine pouring your heart into service only to realize that God does not recognize it—how devastating that would be! That is why we must always remember: true service is about staying in the place God has assigned.
At the same time, we must recognize our limits and abilities. If our passion and zeal exceed our actual capacity, we risk making unrealistic decisions. Let’s look at ourselves through God’s Word and serve faithfully in the place He has given us!
세번째 섬김의 원리는 “맡겨 주신 대로 섬기라” 입니다(21~28절).
성물을 담당하는 고핫 자손을 통솔하는 역할이 아론의 아들 엘르아살(16, 19)입니다.
나머지 레위의 두 아들 게르손과 므라리는 성막의 나머지 부분을 하나님이 맡겨 주신 대로 섬깁니다.
게르손 자손은 성막의 뜰 휘장과 관련된 모든 기구를 담당합니다(26). 므라리 자손은 장막의 널판과 그 띠, 기둥, 받침을 담당합니다(31). 그리고 아론의 아들인 이다말이 두 족속을 관리 감독합니다.
여기서 배울 수 있는 섬김의 원리는 “하나님이 맡겨 주신 대로 감당한다는 것”입니다.
리더가 왜, 엘르아살이야? 왜, 이다말이야? 왜, 이걸 들어야 해? 등의 불평과 불만이 없습니다.
무거운 것 피하고, 힘든 것 피하고 싶지만 하나님이 맡겨 주신 대로 감당해야 합니다.
The third principle of service is "Serve as You Are Entrusted" (Numbers 4:21–28).
Aaron’s son Eleazar was assigned to oversee the Kohathites, who were responsible for handling the sacred objects (Numbers 4:16, 19).
Meanwhile, the other two Levite clans, Gershon and Merari, served according to what God entrusted to them.
The Gershonites took care of the tabernacle’s outer curtains and related equipment (Numbers 4:26).
The Merarites were responsible for the framework of the tabernacle—its boards, crossbars, pillars, and bases (Numbers 4:31).
Ithamar, another son of Aaron, oversaw both of these groups.
From this, we learn an essential principle of service: "Fulfill what God has entrusted to you."
There were no complaints like,"Why is Eleazar the leader?""Why is Ithamar in charge?""Why do I have to do this?"
Even though some tasks were heavier or more difficult, they accepted them because God assigned them.
Likewise, in our service, we should not seek to avoid hard work or compare our roles with others. Instead, we must faithfully carry out what God has entrusted to us.
마지막 섬김의 원리는 “유기적으로 섬기라” 입니다(29~33절).
레위 지파의 섬김을 보면 매우 조직적입니다. 엘르아살의 수하에 고핫 자손이(16), 이다말 수하에서 게르손과 므라리 자손이(28, 33) 조직적으로 활동합니다. 이것을 다른 말로 하면 유기적이라고 표현할 수 있습니다. 공동체는 각자에게 맡겨진 바 역할을 성실히 수행할 때 하나의 완성된 조직체를 경험합니다.
그에게서 온 몸이 각 마디를 통하여 도움을 받음으로 연결되고 결합되어
각 지체의 분량대로 역사하여 그 몸을 자라게 하며 사랑 안에서 스스로 세우느니라 (엡 4:16)
온 몸이 머리로 말미암아 마디와 힘줄로 공급함을 받고 연합하여
하나님이 자라게 하시므로 자라느니라 (골 2:19)
가장 중요한 것은 고핫과 게르손과 므라리는 레위에서 하나 되고, 레위는 아론과 모세를 통하여 연결되며, 모세는 바로 하나님의 명령을 받는다는 사실입니다.
그러므로 교회는 머리 되신 예수님으로 하나되어 유기적으로 연결, 섬기며 성장하는 공동체입니다. 그러므로 교회에서 좀 힘들거나 덜 힘든 일은 있을 수도 있지만, 중요하지 않은 일은 있을 수 없습니다. 모두 필요한 일이고, 다 중요한 일입니다. 모두가 함께 할 때 우리는 그것을 완성된 공동체인 교회라고 부릅니다. 함께 하는 당신 덕분에 교회가 완성되는 것입니다.
The final principle of service is "Serve Organically" (Numbers 4:29–33).
The service of the Levite tribe was highly organized. The Kohathites served under Eleazar (Numbers 4:16), while the Gershonites and Merarites served under Ithamar (Numbers 4:28, 33). This structured approach can also be described as organic—a community functions as a complete body when each member faithfully fulfills their assigned role.
"From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." (Ephesians 4:16)
"The whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow." (Colossians 2:19)
The Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites were united under the Levite tribe, the Levites were connected through Aaron and Moses, and Moses received direct commands from God.
Likewise, the church is one body under Christ, growing and serving in an interconnected and organic way. Some tasks in the church may seem harder than others, but no task is unimportant. Every role is necessary and valuable.
The church is a complete community when everyone serves together. And thanks to you, the church is being built and perfected!
