9:15 성막을 세운 날에 구름이 성막 곧 증거의 성막을 덮었고 저녁이 되면 성막 위에 불 모양 같은 것이 나타나서 아침까지 이르렀으되

9:16 항상 그러하여 낮에는 구름이 그것을 덮었고 밤이면 불 모양이 있었는데

9:17 구름이 성막에서 떠오르는 때에는 이스라엘 자손이 곧 행진하였고 구름이 머무는 곳에 이스라엘 자손이 진을 쳤으니

9:18 이스라엘 자손이 여호와의 명령을 따라 행진하였고 여호와의 명령을 따라 진을 쳤으며 구름이 성막 위에 머무는 동안에는 그들이 진영에 머물렀고

9:19 구름이 성막 위에 머무는 날이 오랠 때에는 이스라엘 자손이 여호와의 명령을 지켜 행진하지 아니하였으며

9:20 혹시 구름이 성막 위에 머무는 날이 적을 때에도 그들이 다만 여호와의 명령을 따라 진영에 머물고 여호와의 명령을 따라 행진하였으며

9:21 혹시 구름이 저녁부터 아침까지 있다가 아침에 그 구름이 떠오를 때에는 그들이 행진하였고 구름이 밤낮 있다가 떠오르면 곧 행진하였으며

9:22 이틀이든지 한 달이든지 일 년이든지 구름이 성막 위에 머물러 있을 동안에는 이스라엘 자손이 진영에 머물고 행진하지 아니하다가 떠오르면 행진하였으니

9:23 곧 그들이 여호와의 명령을 따라 진을 치며 여호와의 명령을 따라 행진하고 또 모세를 통하여 이르신 여호와의 명령을 따라 여호와의 직임을 지켰더라

15 On the day the tabernacle, the tent of the covenant law, was set up, the cloud covered it. From evening till morning the cloud above the tabernacle looked like fire. 16 That is how it continued to be; the cloud covered it, and at night it looked like fire. 17 Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set out; wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped. 18 At the Lord’s command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained in camp. 19 When the cloud remained over the tabernacle a long time, the Israelites obeyed the Lord’s order and did not set out. 20 Sometimes the cloud was over the tabernacle only a few days; at the Lord’s command they would encamp, and then at his command they would set out. 21 Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening till morning, and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out. 22 Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out. 23 At the Lord’s command they encamped, and at the Lord’s command they set out. They obeyed the Lord’s order, in accordance with his command through Moses.

오늘 본문 말씀은 광야길 가운데 이스라엘 백성들이 가나안으로 나아감에 있어서 어떻게 하나님이 이들을 인도하셨는지 알려주고 있습니다. 광야 생활 가운데 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들을 절대 내버려 두지 않으시고 신실하게 함께 하셨습니다. 그걸 상징적으로 보여주는 것이 오늘 말씀입니다.

Today's passage reveals how God led the Israelites on their journey to Canaan through the wilderness. Even in their wilderness life, God never abandoned them but remained faithfully with them. This passage symbolically illustrates that truth.

15절을 보면 성막 위로 낮에는 구름 기둥이 저녁에는 불 기둥이 나타났음을 알 수 있습니다. 구름은 하나님의 임재를 나타냅니다. 시내산 꼭대기에서 모세가 하나님을 대변할 때 하나님은 구름으로 임재하심을 나타내셨습니다. “여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 내가 빽빽한 구름 가운데서 네게 임함은 내가 너와 말하는 것을 백성들이 듣게 하며 또한 너를 영영히 믿게 하려 함이니라 (출 19:9).” 그리하여 시내산 꼭대기에서 모세가 하나님을 만날 때 마다 산 아래에서는 백성들이 그 구름을 보며 하나님을 만나고 있는 모세를 믿고 따를 수 있었던 것 입니다. 그렇게 산 꼭 대기에서 구름으로 임재하셨던 하나님께서 이제는 성막이 완성됨에 따라 백성들 가운데로 내려오사 성막 위를 구름으로 덮으십니다.

In verse 15, we see that a pillar of cloud appeared above the tabernacle during the day, and a pillar of fire appeared at night. The cloud represents God's presence. When Moses spoke on behalf of God at Mount Sinai, God manifested His presence through a cloud. "The Lord said to Moses, ‘I am coming to you in a dense cloud so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you.’" (Exodus 19:9). Because of this, whenever Moses met God at the top of Mount Sinai, the Israelites at the foot of the mountain saw the cloud and trusted Moses. The same God who revealed His presence in the cloud on Mount Sinai now descended to dwell among His people and covered the tabernacle with a cloud.

16절 “항상 그러하여 낮에는 구름이 그것을 덮었고 밤이면 불 모양이 있었는데.”에 있어서 구름 기둥과 불 기둥이 두 개의 다른 기둥이 아닌 하나의 기둥임을 말하는 학자들이 있습니다. 이들의 이러한 의견을 뒷받침의 근거가 되는 말씀은 다음과 같습니다. “낮에는 여호와의 구름이 성막 위에 있고 밤에는 불이 그 구름 가운데에 있음을 이스라엘의 온 족속이 그 모든 행진하는 길에서 그들의 눈으로 보았더라 (출 40:38).” 그리하여 불이 항상 구름에 둘러싸여 타고 있는 기둥의 모양으로서 낮에는 환한 태양으로 인해 구름만 보이고, 밤에는 캄캄하기에 구름을 뚫고 불 기둥으로 모습을 나타낸다는 것 입니다. 오늘 말씀 21절에도 “구름이 밤낮있다가 떠오르면 곧 행진하였으며”라고 나와있는 것으로 볼 때, 백성들이 밤에도 구름 가운데 있는 불을 보면서 행진 했을 가능성을 나타냅니다. 그러므로 본문에 나온 구름은 불기둥과 구름 기둥을 동시에 가리키는 표현으로 봐도 무방합니다.

Some scholars suggest that the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire were not two separate pillars but rather one and the same. Their argument is supported by the following passage: "So the cloud of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the Israelites during all their travels." (Exodus 40:38) According to this interpretation, the fire was always within the cloud, forming a single pillar. During the day, the bright sunlight made only the cloud visible, while at night, the darkness allowed the fire within the cloud to shine through, appearing as a pillar of fire. In verse 21 of today’s passage, it says, “Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for only a few days, or for a night and a day, when it lifted, the Israelites set out.” This suggests that the people may have followed the pillar even at night, guided by the fire within the cloud. Therefore, it is reasonable to interpret the “cloud” mentioned in the passage as referring to both the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire simultaneously—a single, unified manifestation of God’s presence.

그리고 이들이 행진을 하고 말고 하는 문제도 전적인 하나님의 명령에 결정됐습니다. 그리고 하나님은 그러한 명령을 구름을 통해서 드러내셨습니다. 17절 “구름이 성막에서 떠오르는 때에는 이스라엘 자손이 곧 행진하였고 구름이 머무는 곳에 이스라엘 자손이 진을 쳤으니.” 구름이 떠오르고 머무는 상황을 잘 지켜보며 그대로 순종해야 했습니다. 구름이 성막 위에 머무는 날이 길 때도 있었고 짧을 때도 있었습니다. 그리고 구름이 아침에 떠오를 때도 있었고 밤에 떠오를 때도 있었습니다. 언제가 됐든지 구름이 떠오르면 무조건적으로 순종하며 행진해야 했습니다.

Their movement was entirely dependent on God’s command, which He revealed through the cloud. Verse 17 states, "Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, the Israelites set out; wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped." The people had to carefully observe the movement of the cloud and follow it without hesitation. Sometimes, the cloud remained for long periods, and other times for short periods. It could lift in the morning or at night, but whenever it did, they had to obey and move immediately.

그렇게 23절을 보면 이렇게 광야에서는 전적으로 하나님의 명령에 순종하는 훈련의 시간을 이스라엘 백성들이 가진 것을 알 수 있습니다. 광야는 훈련의 기간입니다. 끝나지 않을 듯 보였던 40년의 기간동안 이스라엘 백성들은 약속의 땅에 들어가기 위한 준비의 훈련을 받았습니다. 기독교인으로서 우리도 삶을 살 때 광야를 지나는 듯한 기간이 찾아옵니다. 그럴 때 우리는 눈 앞에 구름 기둥이 없는데 무엇을 붙잡아야 할까요? 이 본문 말씀을 통해서 광야 같은 이 삶 가운데 우리는 어떻게 하나님의 임재와 인도하심을 구할 수 있는지 적용해 볼 수 있습니다.

In verse 23, we see that the Israelites’ time in the wilderness was a period of training in obedience. The wilderness was a place of preparation. During the seemingly endless 40 years, the Israelites underwent training to be ready to enter the Promised Land. As Christians, we also experience wilderness-like seasons in life. In those moments, without a visible pillar of cloud or fire, what should we rely on? This passage teaches us how to seek God's presence and guidance in our own wilderness experiences.

첫째로 하나님은 항상 자녀들과 함께 하신다는 확신이 필요합니다. 과거나 지금이나 변함없이 신실하신 하나님께서는 예수님을 통해 우리에게 성령님을 보내주실 것을 약속하셨습니다. “내가 아버지께 구하겠으니 그가 또 다른 보혜사를 너희에게 주사 영원토록 너희와 함께 있게 하리니 (요 14:16).” 우리가 죄인임을 인정하고 예수님을 구세주로 고백하는 자에게는 모두 성령님이라는 선물을 보내주셨습니다. 그러한 성령님께서는 우리 안에 거하시며 (14:17b) 우리에게 필요한 것을 가르쳐 주십니다 (요 14:26). 예수님께서 말씀하십니다. “내가 너희를 고아와 같이 버려두지 아니하고 너희에게로 오리라 (요 14:18).” 아멘! 

1. We must be certain that God is always with His children.

The same faithful God of the past remains unchanged today. Through Jesus, He promised to send the Holy Spirit to be with us. "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever." (John 14:16). Those who acknowledge their sinfulness and confess Jesus as their Savior receive the Holy Spirit as a gift. The Holy Spirit dwells within us (John 14:17) and teaches us what we need to know (John 14:26). Jesus said, "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you." (John 14:18). Amen!

두번째로 하나님은 우리에게 성경을 통해 말씀하십니다. 하나님은 자녀에게 당신의 뜻을 숨기지 않으십니다. 누구든지 성막 위를 바라 봤을 때 가야되는 때인지 멈춰야 되는 때인지 알 수 있었습니다. 같은 마음으로 이 시대를 살아가는 우리에게는 성경을 주셨습니다. 성경 안에 하나님의 모든 뜻과 알아야 할 지식이 나와있습니다. 누구나 마음만 먹으면 성경을 읽고 이를 통해 하나님의 뜻을 알 수 있습니다. “하나님의 말씀은 살아 있고 활력이 있어 좌우에 날선 어떤 검보다도 예리하여 혼과 영과 및 관절과 골수를 찔러 쪼개기까지 하며 또 마음의 생각과 뜻을 판단하나니 (히 4:12).” 아멘!

2. God speaks to us through Scripture.

Just as the Israelites could look at the tabernacle and know whether it was time to move or stay, God has given us the Bible as our guide. Everything we need to know about God's will is found in Scripture. Anyone with a willing heart can read the Bible and understand God's direction. "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12). Amen!

그리고 세번째로 성경을 주야로 묵상해야 합니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 언제라도 구름이 떠오를 때를 대비하여 준비되어 있어야 하기에 항시로 하늘을 확인했을 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 시편 1편을 따라 “오직 여호와의 율법을 즐거워하여 그의 율법을 주야로 묵상”하여 하나님의 뜻을 분별할 수 있는 복 있는 자들이 되어야 겠습니다.

3. We must meditate on Scripture day and night.

The Israelites had to be constantly prepared for the cloud to move. Likewise, we must continually meditate on God's Word to discern His will. As Psalm 1:2 says, "But whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night." Those who live by this principle will be blessed.

마지막으로 하나님의 섭리로 세우신 리더의 말을 들어야 합니다. 이스라엘 20세 이상 남자들만 해도 60만명이고 여자들과 어린 아이들을 다 합쳤을 때 대략 200만명이라고 추측합니다. 이 많은 사람들이 다 함께 성막을 걷고 행진하고 다시 성막을 짓는 이 모든 행위가 잘 이루어져야 했습니다. 그러기 위해서는 리더인 모세의 명령을 하나님 말씀같이 잘 따라야 했습니다. 우리에게는 하나님의 섭리로 구성된 공동체가 있습니다. 교회가 그렇고 가정이 그렇습니다. 하나님의 섭리 가운데는 질서가 있고 각자의 정해진 역할을 감당해야 되는 조직이 있습니다. 그렇기에 우리는 예배 가운데 목사님을 통해서 들려질 하나님의 말씀을 사모해야 하며 또 각 가정에서 수장으로 세워진 남편과 아버지의 결정을 존중하고 따라야겠습니다.

4. We must listen to the leaders God has appointed.

There were about 600,000 Israelite men over the age of 20, and including women and children, the total population likely reached around two million. For such a vast group to move in unison, they had to follow the leadership of Moses as God's appointed servant. Likewise, God has placed us in communities—such as churches and families—that function under His divine order. We should eagerly listen to God’s Word as preached by pastors and respect the leadership of those whom God has placed in authority, such as husbands and fathers in the family.

우리는 눈 앞에 보이는 구름 기둥으로 하나님의 인도를 받았던 이스라엘 백성들을 부러워 할 필요가 전혀 없습니다. 우리에게도 끊임없이 성령님과 말씀 그리고 예배를 통해서 당신의 뜻을 나타내십니다. 살아계시며 신실하게 우리와 항상 함께 하시는 예수님을 믿고 의지 할 때 삶 가운데서 역사하시는 하나님의 세밀한 손길을 느낄 수 있음을 확신합니다. 

We do not need to envy the Israelites for having a visible pillar of cloud and fire. God still leads us today through the Holy Spirit, the Bible, and worship. When we trust in Jesus, who is always with us, we can experience God's guidance in every aspect of our lives. May we confidently follow His leading, knowing that His hand is always at work in our journey.
