32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

14:39 다시 나아가 동일한 말씀으로 기도하시고

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

14:41 세 번째 오사 그들에게 이르시되 이제는 자고 쉬라 그만 되었다 때가 왔도다 보라 인자가 죄인의 손에 팔리느니라

14:42 일어나라 함께 가자 보라 나를 파는 자가 가까이 왔느니라

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

오늘 본문은 예수님의 인성이 잘 드러난 본문입니다.

그래서 덴버신학교의 로드니 쿠퍼Rodney L. Cooper는 다음과 같이 말했습니다.

마가는 가장 혹독한 믿음의 시험을 직면하시는 그리스도의 완벽하신 인성을 우리에게 보여준다.

예수님은 완전하신 하나님이신 동시에 완전한 인간이십니다.

물론 어떻게 그럴 수가 있는지에 대해서 설명할 수 있는 사람은 단 한 사람도 존재하지 않을 것입니다. 분명한 것은 하나님이라면 신성과 인성을 동시에 완벽하게 가지고 존재하실 수 있다는 것입니다.

어쨌든 본문에서 예수님은 우리와 동일하게 철저하게 연약한 인간이십니다. 예수님 스스로 내 마음이 심히 고민하여 죽게 되었으니 너희는 여기 머물러 깨어 있으라(34)고 말씀하셨습니다.

십자가를 앞에 둔 어느 인간의 고백과 다르지 않습니다. 하지만 예수님은 결국 십자가를 지는 사명을 완수했습니다. 반면에 제자들은 모두 실패하고, 예수를 배신했습니다. 이런 결과의 차이를 가져온 것은 바로 기도였습니다. 기도한 예수님은 성공했고, 기도하지 않은 제자들은 실패한 것입니다. 

Today’s passage reveals the humanity of Jesus in a profound way.

Rodney L. Cooper of Denver Seminary put it this way:

Jesus is fully God and fully human.

Of course, there is no one who can fully explain how this is possible. What we can say with certainty is that if He is God, then He can exist in the fullness of both divinity and humanity at the same time. In any case, in today’s passage, Jesus is completely human, just like us, in His vulnerability. He Himself said, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch” (v.34). This is no different from the confession of any human being standing in the shadow of the cross. And yet, Jesus ultimately fulfilled His mission by taking up the cross. In contrast, all of the disciples failed and betrayed Him.

What made the difference in the outcome was prayer.Jesus, who prayed, overcame.The disciples, who did not pray, failed. 

겟세마네에서 배우는 기도

먼저 예수님의 기도에서 배울 수 있는 것은 기도는 간절하게 해야 한다는 것입니다(33, 34절).

겟세마네(가드 쉐멘)는 예루살렘에서 동쪽으로 1.2km(0.8mile) 기드론 시내를 건너자 마자 나오는 가까운 감람산 중턱입니다. 감람나무(올리브)가 많아서 올리브 기름을 짜던 곳이라서 겟세마네, 곧 기름 짜는 틀이라는 이름으로 불렸습니다. 예수님은 기름 짜듯 간절하고 절실하게 기도하셨습니다. 누가는 이 간절함을 이렇게 기록합니다.

예수께서 힘쓰고 애써 더욱 간절히 기도하시니 땀이 땅에 떨어지는 핏방울 같이 되더라 (눅 22:44)

두번째로 예수님의 기도는 아버지의 뜻을 구하는 기도였습니다(36b절).

기도는 내가 원하는 것을 아뢰는 것입니다(36a절). 우리 역시 기도할 때 친밀하게 아바(아빠)라고 부르면서 아뢰는 기도를 해야 합니다. 하지만 성숙한 기도는 반드시 But(36b)이 있어야 합니다.

나의 원하는 것만 구하는 것이 아니라, 아버지의 뜻이 무엇인지 구하는 것이 진정한 기도입니다. 그러므로 아버지의 뜻을 알 때까지 기도하는 끈질긴 기도가 필요한 것입니다.

세번째는 예수님의 기도는 반복적인 기도였습니다(39절).

중언부언(의미 없이 반복하는)하는 기도는 해서는 안 됩니다. 하지만 주님은 반복적으로 기도하는 것을 주저하시지 않았습니다. 핵심은 반복하느냐 하지 않느냐 문제가 아니라 진심의 문제인 것입니다.

그런 점에서 반복적으로 외우는 주기도문을 우리가 어떻게 기도해야 하는지 생각해 보아야 합니다.

진심을 담은 반복적인 기도는 힘이 있습니다.

Prayer Lessons from Gethsemane

The first thing we can learn from Jesus’ prayer is that prayer should be earnest and heartfelt (verses 33–34).

Gethsemane (Gat Shemanim) is located about 1.2 km (0.8 miles) east of Jerusalem, just across the Kidron Valley, on the slope of the Mount of Olives. The name "Gethsemane" means "olive press," as it was a place where olives were pressed for oil. Just as olives are crushed for oil, Jesus prayed with deep urgency and intensity. Luke records this intensity in the following way:

The second thing we learn is that Jesus’ prayer sought the will of the Father (verse 36b).

Prayer is, in part, bringing our desires before God (verse 36a). We too should pray intimately, calling out “Abba, Father,” as Jesus did. But mature prayer always includes a “But” (verse 36b).

True prayer does not only seek what I want, but earnestly seeks to know what the Father’s will is. That’s why persistent prayer is necessary—prayer that continues until we understand the will of God.

The third thing we learn is that Jesus’ prayer was repetitive (verse 39).

Jesus warned against meaningless repetition in prayer, but He Himself did not hesitate to pray the same words more than once. The key issue is not repetition itself, but whether the prayer comes from a sincere heart.

In that sense, we should reflect on how we pray the Lord’s Prayer—something we often repeat. Sincere, heartfelt repetition in prayer carries real power.

우리가 기도해야 하는 이유

예수님은 사실 하나님이시기에 기도하실 필요가 없는 분입니다. 하지만 인간이시기에 기도하셨습니다.

그러므로 우리는 당연히 기도해야 합니다. 우리는 예수님을 보면서 왜 기도해야 하는지 깨닫게 됩니다.  

첫번째로 기도는 사명이기 때문에 기도해야 합니다(32, 34절).

예수님은 8명의 제자에게는 여기 앉아 있으라(32), 3명의 제자에게는 깨어 있으라(34, 37, 38) 명령하셨습니다. 이 두 명령은 중보기도, 합심기도에 동참할 것을 촉구하는 명령입니다. 성경에 수없이 기록된 것이 기도하라는 명령입니다. 기도는 마지막을 살아가는 성도들의 사명이 분명합니다.

두번째로 시험에 들지 않기 위해서 기도해야 합니다(38절).

예수님은 왜 이렇게 깨어 있을 것을 명령하셨을까요? 그것은 잠시 후 벌어질 일들을 아셨기 때문입니다.

예수님은 기도함으로 승리하셨고, 제자들은 기도하지 않음으로 패했습니다.

근신하라 깨어라 너희 대적 마귀가 우는 사자 같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾나니 (벧전 5:8)

베드로는 성도들에게 무엇을 생각하며 이 말씀을 했을까요? 깨어 있는 것은 기도함과 밀접한 상관관계가 있습니다. 깨어 있는 자가 기도할 수 있고, 기도하는 자가 깨어 있는 자입니다.

Why We Must Pray

Jesus, being God, had no need to pray. Yet He prayed—because He was also fully human.

And that is why we must pray all the more. As we look at Jesus, we come to understand why prayer is essential.

First, we must pray because prayer is a calling (verses 32, 34).

Jesus told eight of His disciples, “Sit here” (v. 32), and to the other three He said, “Stay awake” (vv. 34, 37, 38). These two commands were calls to join Him in intercessory and united prayer. Throughout Scripture, we repeatedly see God’s command to pray. Prayer is clearly the calling of all believers, especially those living in the last days.

Second, we must pray so that we do not fall into temptation (v. 38).

Why did Jesus so strongly urge them to stay awake? It’s because He knew what was about to happen.

Jesus overcame through prayer, while the disciples, who did not pray, were overcome.

What do you think Peter had in mind when he wrote this to believers? Being awake is closely tied to being prayerful. Those who are spiritually awake can truly pray, and those who pray are the ones who stay spiritually awake.

성경을 보면 하나님께서 거절하신 세가지의 유명한 기도가 등장합니다.

처음은 모세가 가나안 땅에 들어가기를 원하는 기도입니다(신 3:26).

하나님은 모세에게 더 이상 이일로 기도하지 말라고 말씀 하셨습니다.

다음은 바울이 자신의 몸에 있는 질병을 고쳐달라고 세번이나 기도한 것입니다.

하나님은 바울에게 다음과 같이 응답하셨습니다.

나에게 이르시기를 내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여짐이라 (고후 12:9)

마지막은 오늘 본문인 예수님의 겟세마네 기도입니다(36).

이 잔을 옮겨 달라는 아들의 기도에도, 하나님은 철저하게 침묵하셨습니다.

결국 예수님은 나의 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 하옵소서 라고 응답 받을 수 있는 기도를 합니다.

진짜 기도는 우리의 열망과 의지를 하나님의 열망과 의지로 바꾸어 나가는 것입니다.

하나님이 거절하신 이 기도는 모두 훨씬 좋은 결과를 가져왔습니다.

모세의 기도에 대한 하나님의 거절은 그의 타락과 우상화를 막았습니다.

바울의 기도에 대한 하나님의 거절은 그를 계속하여 거룩하고 능력 있는 사역자로 머물게 했습니다.

아들의 기도에 대한 아버지의 거절은 온 인류를 구원하는 은혜가 되었습니다.

그러므로 오늘 새벽 무엇이든 기도합시다. 기도하는 가운데 나의 뜻이 변하여, 하나님의 뜻에 순종하게 될 것입니다. 기도하는 중에 놀라운 성령충만을 경험할 것입니다.

When we look at the Bible, we find three well-known prayers that God refused to answer.

The first is Moses’ prayer to enter the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 3:26).God told Moses, “Do not speak to Me anymore about this matter.”

The second is Paul’s prayer to be healed from his physical affliction, which he prayed three times.God responded to Paul with these words:

The third is Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane, found in today’s passage (v. 36).Even to the Son’s heartfelt plea—“Take this cup from Me”—God responded with complete silence.

In the end, Jesus prayed a prayer that could be answered:“Yet not what I will, but what You will.”

True prayer is the process of transforming our desires and will into God’s desires and will.

And each of these “unanswered” prayers actually led to far greater outcomes:

• God’s refusal of Moses’ prayer prevented his downfall and the danger of being idolized.

• God’s refusal of Paul’s prayer kept him humble and made him a powerful and holy servant.

• God’s refusal of the Son’s prayer brought salvation to all humanity.

So this morning, let us pray about everything. As we pray, our will may be transformed into God’s will, leading us into obedience. In prayer, we will experience the amazing fullness of the Holy Spirit.
