20250422 [새벽묵상] 하나님의 마음을 헤아려 기도하라 | Pray with understanding of God’s heart (민/Num 14:11~25)

11 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they.”

13 Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them. 14 And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard that you, Lord, are with these people and that you, Lord, have been seen face to face, that your cloud stays over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. 15 If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, 16 ‘The Lord was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath, so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’

17 “Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’ 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”

20 The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them, as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the Lord fills the whole earth, 22 not one of those who saw my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times— 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it. 24 But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it. 25 Since the Amalekites and the Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.”

Today's message speaks about how the Israelites refused to trust in God. God Himself says, "They have despised me." Despite the many miracles God performed, they simply could not put their faith in Him. In other words, they did not understand God's heart at all. God rescued them from Egypt to fulfill His promise to Abraham and to make them His people. Yet throughout God's journey leading them to the Promised Land, they rejected Him with complaints, greed, jealousy, and fear. They did not believe in God. They did not understand His heart. God declares He will destroy such people. But Moses prays to the angry God. Because Moses understood God's heart, he prays for forgiveness according to God's character. And God listens to Moses' prayer. Today's passage shows how powerful prayer can be when it comes from someone who understands God's heart. Therefore, we too must pray with understanding of God's heart.

To pray with understanding of God's heart, first, we must believe in God. In verse 11, God says that not believing in Him is despising Him, and He says He will strike and destroy such people. Despite the many miracles God performed, these people completely failed to understand God's heart and intentions. Through ten plagues, He saved them from Egypt, which was stronger than the descendants of Anak, and He parted the Red Sea to defeat their chariots and horsemen. He led and protected them with pillars of cloud and fire. He brought water from rocks and fed them with manna. He descended upon Mount Sinai to reveal Himself before all the people. And He commanded them to build the tabernacle so He could dwell among them. He revealed Himself as their King. Yet they rejected becoming God's people by not believing in Him. God calls this despising Him.

The same applies to us. To understand God's heart, we must first trust Him. We must remember what God has done for us as we face our problems. Even when we encounter problems we cannot handle ourselves, we must remember that God is our King and the Sovereign over all things. God has led us this far—if we cannot trust such a God, how can we pray to Him? The first step in praying with understanding of God's heart is believing in God.

Second, when praying with understanding of God's heart, we must pray for God's name. In verses 13-15 of today's passage, Moses prays like this: "With your power you brought these people up from Egypt. If you put these people to death, the Egyptians will hear about it and tell the people living in Canaan. The people of Canaan have already heard that you, LORD, are with these people. What will happen to your name if you destroy them?" Moses did not begin his prayer by saying, "We have sinned; please forgive our sins." Moses' focus was entirely fixed on God. Even while interceding for the people, he prayed from God's perspective, not from the people's. He prayed for forgiveness for the sake of God's reputation, for God's name.

This prayer also shows how deeply Moses understood God's heart. In this prayer, Moses lists what God had done for the Israelites: led them out of Egypt with power, dwelt among the people, revealed Himself, and went before them in pillars of cloud and fire. In all these actions, God's heart to claim Israel as His people is revealed. Yet while the Israelites themselves failed to understand God's heart, Moses notes that the Egyptians and Canaanites—foreign nations—had heard of His reputation. This reputation reveals who God is. Verse 16 shows that God is One who keeps His oaths and has the power to fulfill His promises. Moses prayed with understanding of God's name—that is, God's heart.

Third, when praying with understanding of God's heart, we must hold onto God's words in prayer. In verse 17, Moses prays to God, "Now may the Lord's strength be displayed, just as you have declared." Then he quotes exactly what God had said. And what was that? It was God's own revelation of who He is. What kind of God is He? Verse 18 says: "The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished..." The words Moses held onto were about God's character. In verse 17, "May the Lord's strength be displayed," and in verse 19, "According to your great love"—what does this mean? It means God's faithful love is that great. Moses knew that God's heart was full of faithful love. Moses knew that God had been continually forgiving them according to His faithful love. So in verse 19, what does he plead? "In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now." Thus, Moses prayed with understanding of God's heart. Because he knew God's character was exactly as God had declared, Moses held onto God's words in his prayer.

To conclude, the Israelites committed the sin of despising God right at the threshold of the Promised Land. But before an angry God stood Moses, who prayed with understanding of God's heart. Moses believed in God. He mentioned God's reputation and what God had done for His people, reminding God of what was in His heart. He held onto God's words and mentioned God's character within those words, reminding Him that He had been continually forgiving the people. In response to Moses' prayer that understood God's heart, God says, "I have forgiven them, as you asked." Through one person's prayer, an entire nation received forgiveness. This shows how powerful prayer can be when it comes from someone who knows God's heart. I pray that everyone here today will become like Moses, praying with understanding of God's heart. Let us pray.
